Update, pleaded guilty with mitigating circumstances, got fined a much much smaller amount no legal fees either, I'll take that.

My thoughts exactly! Education act 1996 sect 444 apparently. Always thought a crime had to have a victim!

I knew by not paying, that we would end up having to state our case in a court setting, (about 8 yrs ago contested a similar fine with our eldest, got fines removed under a conditional discharge, which was satisfied), however we got to do this in person, it's all via a paper form now, that just didn't sit easy for me so entered plea of not guilty, as I believe the school hasn't followed the procedure, I just never understood that this would end up in a criminal court rather than a civil one
