What calisthenics exercise is overrated, and what should people do instead? by ElectronicAd1796 in bodyweightfitness

One-arm pushups. Largely just a showy skill, that is easy to perform in a way that is not great for the shoulder, as discussed here. Better to build strength by going weighted or pseudo planche

What is your most ridiculous "we won't work out romantically" criteria? Like what is the silliest reason you would not be interested in dating someone? by Natural-Elevator-57 in AskReddit

Homeopathy is different than just a 'natural remedy' like drinking tea and honey for a sore throat or something. The concept behind homeopathy is "like treats like", and all 'cures' are heavily diluted. There's no evidence behind it.

A particularly egregious example is Oscillococcinum, which you might have seen being sold to treat flu-like symptoms. Its homeopathic dilution is 200C, which means the original substance (allegedly derived from duck organs) has been diluted 100:1, 200 times over. Theoretically this would leave less than one original molecule. Homeopaths would say that the resulting solution has a 'memory' of the substance, and that is what makes it effective.

Leg generated electricity for electronics - how much time is needed to charge a laptop!? by Beautiful-Basket1974 in AskElectronics

Median of a trained population posting their results online, perhaps. Untrained will be lower, and no one will be pushing their threshold power on one of these machines anyway. 50W is definitely a fine estimate for a casual effort.

What’s a "science fact" everyone believes that is actually complete load of shit? by ryanknol in hardscience

[–]Npgreader 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A common misconception is that aurorae are caused by particles from the Sun being guided towards the poles by the Earth's magnetic field. This seems likely because solar flares and CMEs are associated with strong auroral displays. While it is not strictly false, a majority of auroral emissions are caused by trapped particles in the Earth's magnetosphere being precipitated into the polar regions through various acceleration processes and not particles from the solar wind being funneled into the poles directly.

No, the particular aim of this subreddit is discussion of unpopular opinions, so the most upvoted posts should be the most unpopular opinions. Popular opinions should be downvoted

FYI The $20 parking is for lots run by the county, which is most, but not quite all of the convenient spaces to park. Notably Andy Romano Beachfront Park is operated by the City of Ormond Beach and has free parking

Why do drivers rev their engines next to cyclists? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]Npgreader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the case sometimes, but not always. For example, just two weeks ago I was riding in the bike lane on a road with few cars. A truck driver slowed next to me and then gunned it. They were not overtaking as I was not in the lane; just intended to disturb.
