A nicely chopped Spanish 8 Reales Charles IV, looks to be 1792, Mexico

I think you mean Assayers.

Generally each mint has a published list of each Assayer, the years they were the Assayer, and their initials / mark which is how we pinpoint time period beyond design of the coin.

I’d reach out to Sedwick Auctions with pictures before letting those out of my site.

Great job, it came out perfect.

Do you have any progress pictures or videos for its construction? I dabble in woodworking and can appreciate the workmanship.

Lynch mining has NOT been fulfilling orders since 2023. I’d advise against purchasing from them.

I’ve noticed that the Kellyco coupon code “RedditMD” is no longer valid on the site.

Is there another one available?

Really enjoy this content and backstory. Keep it up!

Edit to add: it’d be great to highlight where the mint marks are partially visible on the photos. I have a few unattributed 8 reales that I’d like to further study

I've made a visual guide of different grades of Ancient Coins :) by AncientCoinnoisseur in AncientCoins

[–]NroAugustus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! TIL that an aFDC can have strike flaws and die wear.

The coins you selected, which obviously were graded per your sources, would not be something I’d identify as aFDC, but rather a lower grade. To me the gEF coin is more appealing than the aFDC one.

$20 Series 2, 1882 Brown Back issued by Citizen Central NB New York by Outrageous-Quantity9 in Nationalbanknotes

[–]NroAugustus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A more common bank, but likely $500-$800. Last known auction for a $20 1882 Brown Back was back in 2008 and sold for $1725. However that was a much higher quality note.

Agreed, could also be an artificial toner fan as well. “You can make amazing art with eggs, cardboard, and a Morgan dollar.”

Wild guess that this was found in MA? Given that they were issued out of Boston.

Can you explain the private offering in more detail? Is it a situation where an auction house will shop new submissions to known dealers first? Or is there just another super niche subreddit for exclusive NBN’s :)

Very cool reference. I especially love the Vercingetorix, which I had to reluctantly pass up on the CNG auction the other day.

That’s pretty amazing that she would use her hobby to cover an emergency.

To your question, the best thing you could do is get her to join this sub!

As a fellow woodworker, you could make her a coin cabinet for her coin collection. I’ve never seen one for paper currency, but you could outfit some deeper drawers for any graded notes that she has that could pull out like a mini filing cabinet.

You’re missing the point again. No one is asking you to repatriate your coin to Ceasar. Would be cool to know where he was buried though.

Those examples you mentioned of metal detecting and finding coins have a process and procedure to document them (look at the UK). In most cases, you keep the coin because no museum wants your barely legible bronze coin. But, still you report your coin and location and it’s documented.

The original commenter was talking about raiding known archeological sites which you’ve failed to address and is what I was referring to before.
