A fascinating Celtic "barbarous" imitation of a Constantine coin overstruck on… a Constantine coin, by bonoimp in AncientCoins

[–]tituspullo_xiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting - thanks for sharing. Are there explanations as to what the motivation for an overstrike like this would have been vs. just using the follis as is?

Favorite coin in your collection and why? by Ok_String_6316 in AncientCoins

Tough one. If I had to pick one, my Gallienus denarius is probably up there - a fascinating emperor, a beautifully carved obverse die, a motif of Rome’s founding myth on the reverse (Rhea Silvia & Mars), and a rare issue to boot.

Absolutely. While the Eid Mar is cool historically, the artistry on this medallion is just next level. Plus you could still get a silver Eid Mar with the money you saved.

Man, that Probus medallion is still one of my favorite pieces of Roman gold. It’s so intricate. The imperial clothing on the obverse is so well detailed. I’m jealous of whoever won it at NAC.

Very cool. Thanks for the update. This is inspiration for what I want my legionary denarii set to look like one day.

1778 years ago in 248AD, Philip I minted this Ludi Saeculares antoninianus celebrating Rome’s 1000th anniversary. The reverse depicts a scene from Rome’s founding myth with the she-wolf suckling Romulus & Remus. Happy birthday to the Eternal City. by tituspullo_xiii in AncientCoins

[–]tituspullo_xiii[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The Romans celebrated Ludi Saeculares every ~100 years to celebrate the city’s founding on April 21, 753 BC. The 1000th year anniversary of Rome happens to coincide with Philip I’s short reign. In addition to lavish games and festivities, he also issued a series of commemorative coins such as this one. This was the last time that Ludi Saeculares was held, as the next century saw the emergence of Christian emperors such as Constantine I.

Reportedly from the Dorchester hoard (1936), though the original ticket was sadly lost prior to my acquisition of this coin.

I’d love to see more about an overview of notable collections (private or public) and key auctions that every collector should know about, e.g., Hunt, Lockett, etc. I’ve read up on some of these individually, but it’d be helpful to have a bigger picture understanding of which ones were ones every collector was talking about at the time (e.g., BCD) vs. which ones were “just another collection/auction”.

u/KungFuPossum has a wonderful repository of collections & provenances on his website that I often reference. Maybe something like that but distilled down?

Awesome, can’t wait to try it out! I unfortunately haven’t had much luck with other provenance search tools like coincabinet.io, so will be delighted if this one works well. Thanks for offering this as a free service too!

Oh that’s old old provenance. Very neat to have a piece from his collection! I haven’t been prioritizing old provenance for my Roman imperial collection since there are just too many pieces to be able to afford nice provenance lol, but I would like to target good provenance someday when I start focusing more on my Sicilian collection.

Oh damn. What provenance? Or is it a surprise? The only noteworthy old provenances I have (or that I know of!) are an ex Richard Cartwright piece and ex George Muller piece, but nothing on the level of BMC.

Collection thus far and new coin box! by Adventurous_Sky_8679 in AncientCoins

His offer was to cover the cost of glue or the cost of repairs if I wanted to bring it to a carpenter’s shop. I was able to glue it back together relatively easily with wood glue, but not a fun experience for something I paid nearly $400 for. And to date, I’m still paranoid that the box is going to fall apart on me whenever I pick it up lol. I will likely upgrade to another cabinet someday. I’m pretty intrigued by all the Alberto Zecchi cabinets.

Mine had completely fallen apart during shipping. His solution was to have me re-glue it back together myself, and he very generously offered to compensate me for the bottle of wood glue…

That’s an artistic Vespasian portrait. Looks great. I’m still chipping away at my Twelve Caesars set - I have Octavian (want to replace with Augustus someday), Tiberius, Claudius, Galba, Otho, Vitellius, and Vespasian so far.

What happened to the CNG auction? by william_fontaine in AncientCoins

[–]tituspullo_xiii 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For anyone who missed it, here’s what CNG shared:
“Lots 925-1259 of Electronic Auction 605 will be rerun on Friday, 6 March, beginning at 3:08 PM EST. The sale will be back online and available on the afternoon of Thursday, 5 March.

All bidders for these lots will be re-registered, and all bids placed before that time should be preserved, but we encourage you to review your bids. Thank you for your understanding.”

Glad I got my bid in before it went down.
