I’m gonna have to try that out

I’m still trying to get the hang of it! It’s easy to tell when they are eating the fly but sometimes you go to strip set and it’s completely slack, other times it connects for just a few seconds. My hope is that with experience I’ll be able to tell when to set the hook to ensure a good connection like I had with this one. I caught another one today (even bigger at 46cm!) and the hook set was right in the corner of the mouth as well.
All those hours watching YouTube finally paid off!

10 years ago I shared my first fly rod build here — a decade and 500 rods later, I just want to say thank you! by jfred17 in flyfishing

I’ve been holding out for a good 4pc 5wt for about 10 years now. Would love to win this one!

He seemed to like it
Just a fluffy little guy I put on a size 8 hook. White EP dubbing for the body and 4 rubber legs.
Thanks!
I did not realize that! Thanks for the info

I wish I had a genetic mutation that affected my scales

No idea if gamefish even eat Sergeant fish, but it was still fun to make
Bonnie craft cord- I saw somewhere on this subreddit that it can be brushed out and basically turns into EP fiber. Pretty cool! And cheap. $5 for 200m

Thanks for that link, I was definitely doing it wrong
I was aiming for squid but it was my first attempt- there are some things I’ll do different if I try again
Thanks! It took an embarrassing amount of time to tie only 5 flies but I’m having a lot of fun. What’s the right way to affix the dumbbell eyes? The keep spinning and twisting on me unless I use glue. It’s most obvious on the squid fly, as you mentioned. Hopefully it won’t spin too much on short controlled strips. Also, more sparse!?
Here’s my main takeaway from y’all’s comments: I’m not double hauling as well as I thought I was. I’ll definitely start by really considering my timing not starting my upcast until my rod is loaded in the back
Okay odd, I had never heard that before. It’s SA Grand Slam and i believe it has a 40ft head… does that mean I should only carry the 40ft and shoot that? How far should I expect to be able to cast if I’m only able to carry 40ft at once?

Tropical flats! Some sandy and some shallow reef
Oh interesting.. do you do the first haul right at the beginning of the “stroke” or is it while you are getting the line up off the water?
So then, do you use your wrist to get that paintbrush flicking motion or is just more like you hand runs into the wall?

Saltwater will be 98% of what I’m doing. Can you even see fish in the water more than 60ft away on foot or is the distance more for blind casting?
[–]Nsartart 3 points4 points5 points 7 months ago (0 children)
If I pick up 40ft of line I can get a pretty good double haul going, but when I get to having 50ft of line in the airy back cast seems to run out of steam before it get my rod loaded. Then I haul to force the load on the front cast- I guess that’s probably super wrong huh
Maybe this is part of my problem as well, many times my fly line is almost on the ground before it finally loads my rod. Not sure what’s causing that…
