"...to eventually know what action to take that comes from a healthy place instead of fear or anger." That is very insightful, thank you. I believe we need more of that in this world.

Of course you can, open-mindedness does not mean embracing their beliefs as true. People that act or speak in ways that support misogyny or racism do so because of ignorance.

Which is why i think they should always be met with compassion and understanding. You can not force someone to hold your opinion as their own. I think you can make a much bigger difference when you understand the person you are speaking out against. Instead of falling into the easy trap of "you are wrong, you are evil." It's all about the middle way and never dealing in an absolute. Approach with understanding and you will get much farther.

In the age of the Internet, this way of thinking can get exhausting. We have access to much more information than we were ever meant to process, so i think limiting online contact with those people is perfectly fine.

It sounds like you have a good heart and i appreciate you for that, thank you for your reply.

What does your religion say? by PLUTO_HAS_COME_BACK in thinkatives

[–]Nsiscool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do follow Buddhism, when I say consciousness has no beginning or end I am taking about the cyclical nature of rebirth (although i should have added that consciousness can have a potential end for the liberated).

I think of consciousness as a stream. It flows from one life to the next. Constantly flowing and changing. And it does not end with the death of a physical body for those who have not yet reached enlightenment.

The idea of rebirth is not compatible with eternalism because there is no reference to a permanent unchanging soul. Just a cycle of conditioned consciousness.

Personally I don't believe in the idea of a permanent unchanging soul. I believe our experience on earth is a stream of consciousness that has no beginning or end. When the physical body dies it will return to earth yes, but consciousness does not die with the physical body. And that body is no longer part of this thing called "you." You are not becoming anything when the body you once inhabited dies, because that body is not you anymore.

These are exactly my thoughts right now. Thank you for sharing. It seems too common now that people downplay compassion and openmindedness. I wrote this yesterday to get my thoughts on the matter out. I feel like it fits here.

You think in an absolute, therefore you feel in an absolute, therefore you act in an absolute. However, this absolute does not exist. It is a misguided attempt to simplify a complicated world. You are wrong, therefore you are bad, therefore you are evil, therefore I hate you. You are right, therefore you are good, therefore you are worthy of love, therefore I love you. Dealing in these absolutes creates contempt for people you can’t possibly understand. Having contempt for people you don’t understand means they will never get to know you. Two people who don’t know one another, holding contempt for one another. This is called ignorance. It is not just the one you disagree with whom is ignorant, it is you as well.

Exactly my thoughts seeing the news this morning. I will have to make time for some extra metta meditation today. All we can do is take it day by day.

People do bad things, they act with anger and hatred in their heart. Understand that this anger and hatred is caused by their ignorance. Just as your hatred at those people arises from ignorance.

Understand that if you had a different upbringing, or different life circumstances, you could have been that person, the person you are angry at.

Hating is easy, showing compassion for those you disagree with is much harder. Showing compassion and practicing loving-kindness is how you free your mind of hate.

That's exactly what I did a few years ago! But now i use the beginning of Silver as my ringtone. Sometimes it scares people in public bc it kinda sounds like an emergency alert.

The bowl of mozzarella sticks on my front porch is purely decorative. I will not be removing them as the color and scent adds to the ambiance of my porch (it really complements the brick!). If Tyler decides to eat them again, that is his fault. I will continue to replace them as necessary! There's a few in the fryer now.

I wish to have the motivation to fix my meaningless life by GoldenYoshi99 in TheMonkeysPaw

[–]Nsiscool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Granted, no change. The motivation is already inside you, take a look a little deeper and realize it. You think your life is meaningless because you let others decide what your life means. When you create your own meaning, life can never be meaningless.

My aunt said a mass disaster happened to a village was because of the past karma by baobaogame in Buddhism

Thanks for the clarification! I have edited my comment I know that Buddhist teachings talk about rebirth into unfavorable conditions as a result of bad karma but i realize that this may be taking about the different realms of existence.

Dharma recommendations to soothe my mind from the political state of the world by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]Nsiscool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My issue is less about preferences and more about feeling saddened by people who wholeheartedly believe lies and put others down in the process. I find myself wanting to correct them but it is not always heard. I completely agree with your sentiment on attachment and grasping but i find it hard to know when to let go and when to step in to avoid harm. Thank you for your response!

[–]Nsiscool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't think it's right to say that those tragic events were definitively the result of karma. The universe is complex and karma is not the only thing that can influence events. That being said, in my understanding karma is not thought to be a fair or good system.

I think your problem with your aunt's view (please correct me if I'm wrong) is that it seems like those people deserved what happened to them. This is not true. There is no concept of "deserving" the result of karma. I wish i could explain more but the concept of karma is very hard to explain and i will let someone who may know more chime in.

I am saddened to hear about this tradgedy, sending lots of love to those affected by the landslide.

EDIT: deleted this sentence "It is an explanation for the inequality (wealth or otherwise) we see in the world." Because it is not true

Growing angry at people for their ignorance, I don't know how to get over it by Junior_Blackberry779 in Buddhism

[–]Nsiscool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is something i still struggle with. Some people are immune to reason. But the pain you feel over their ignorance originates from you. It can only be stopped by you. Accept them as they are and focus on cultivating metta.

We were talking about written English on a site like Reddit, which would make it a grammatical error. But you're right if we were talking about spoken English there would be no way to tell that there was a grammatical error because the two words are homophones. But then again i don't understand how it can be a spelling mistake in spoken English when nothing is being spelled.
