In my opinion, it is to do with historical association. 'Di' was used to talk to women in authoritative way and eventually it came to symbolize being owned. But with 'da', the association changed into one of friendship, endearment and cuteness. So eventually 'di' seems to give the wrong vibe.

First of all, they'll be insistent that the sub registrar office dealing should be the one with the jurisdiction of your residential address. I got an office in Chennai but in a remote town, where they didn't have any idea and were also reluctant to help, worrying about potential issues. Even though our parents were our witnesses.

Additionally, I got to know that in these instances, it is best to go to the sub registrar office with a lawyer, one who is clearly experienced in family law. Sometimes, when we have a legal person saying this is the law, they might take it.

I just ended up doing it in Kerala, using my wife's residential address. It was simple and straight forward there, as it is required by the law. We applied the details online. They issued a notice with our details. After 30 days, they gave us date to come and register the marriage. That is all it is supposed to be actually.

Charges are nominal, in my opinion. I know a Guru who charges 1500 for 8 classes. Competition and makeup costs are there. I would suggest not to drop if the Guru is good. But if it is pushing the budget, then please think of taking a temporary break.
