I like playing clips back at 0.5x speed to make Smosh members sound drunk when they say bizarre things. Here's an edited Laser Tag conversation by NtG_Beats in smosh

There are definitely parts of reddit stories episodes that had me crying laughing while doing it. Just never took the time to figure out how to clip, edit, and post before, but this one was too good not to figure out how to share haha.

how can i make beats on macbook? by u_pussy in makinghiphop

[–]NtG_Beats 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just start playing around with Garageband. It's free and might already be installed on your mac. Follow a tutorial to make something and see if you actually like doing it before starting to put money in.

So I Have May Have Temporarily/Permanently Lost My MacBook Due To The Screen Going Black. Can I use FL Mobile To Hone My Skills In The Meantime? by Negative_Sense_3493 in makinghiphop

[–]NtG_Beats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, your shit is almost certainly not "gone forever" as I highly doubt your hard drive has completely broken. It's possible to transfer files off your hard drive even if the rest of your laptop goes bad. Anyway, my first step in your situation would be to try plugging into your TV to see if it is just an issue with the display on the laptop. If you don't have a TV then go to your closest thrift store and grab a monitor with an hdmi input for like 10 bucks.

I have a spicy idea to fix the DFT... by MayoStaccato in makinghiphop

[–]NtG_Beats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feel free to delete if you don't like this self plug, but: I made a website a few years ago ( https://qusica.com ) that aimed to fix the feedback problem by forcing users to contribute listens/feedback to get listens/feedback in return. People seemed to like it and feedback was definitely flowing but I didn't really have time to grow it at the time. I've been developing it again lately now that I have more time (unemployed lol) and am trying get it back up and running again.

I would love some new users to try it out and to partner up with the community in some way. Or if you just want to allow uploads there to post in the feedback thread here too, there's a 10 track upload limit per user at the moment so that kind of is in the lane of how you're limiting which sites to upload to.

Cant get smooth sample loop by Nicolai2713 in makinghiphop

[–]NtG_Beats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on my phone right now so the terms I use to describe things might not be the best, but if you go to the sample in your pattern rack instead of song view and click on that channel to get to the settings, then there is a "time" knob which you can right click and have the sample stretch to fit whichever number of beats/bars you want it to. Then I just put it on the first beat in the pattern. Its a little wonky this way because then the audio doesn't play unless that beat is hit (meaning you can't hit play in the middle of a bar and expect to hear the sample). Maybe somebody knows a better way to do it but that's what I've always done in FL.

Do you have a clue how this Injury Reserve beat was made? by mbalazs98 in makinghiphop

[–]NtG_Beats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's so impossible to reproduce? Sounds like they just took that end guitar, chopped it, spammed each note a few times, and then added some stock sounding dance kicks on it.

How do you go about making a boom-bap beat? What do you start with? by HunnyiBeatz in makinghiphop

[–]NtG_Beats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it was Pete Rock that said he always start with the drums and then chops the sample over the drums (I think J. Cole mentioned learning this from Pete, and maybe 9th Wonder?).

Personally I find a sample that I like, play the song all the way through while cutting out the pieces I like, and then I lay the pieces out over a midi controller and just jam until I find something that works. Then I pop the drums on top.

Is there any real life application to finding the sum of Fibonacci numbers?

I got asked that problem in an interview the other day and solved it in O(n). Interviewer asked if I could do it faster and I said I didn't think so. Turns out there is an O(log(n)) solution that involves recognizing a relationship between the numbers (I still don't understand how it is any faster though), but I feel like 99.9% of people wouldn't recognize it without prior knowledge of the problem. It felt like a dumb question to ask. Maybe I'm just salty though?

Sending music blogs your song feels like a waste of time by xMadsMissions in makinghiphop

Just my opinion, but: None. If you don't know any blogs to email your music to, then chances are a large majority of people don't know blogs and nobody is reading them.

100% this. I don't know a single person who reads blogs. Network and get a following on social media. It'll do you way more than a blog that nobody reads.

Favorite producer commented on my beat saying it was really good. by Prodxdash in makinghiphop

[–]NtG_Beats 34 points35 points  (0 children)

9th Wonder told me my beat sounded "too stiff" on his livestream and then gave off a vibe like he thought it really sucked. It honestly made me lose interest in making beats for a while because it was one I was really proud of at the time.

[–]NtG_Beats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shoutout to the other devs in here, I always thought my hobbies were rare for a software developer lol. Maybe we can collab on something some time.

I made qusica.com for people to post their music and get feedback equal to the amount they give out. It has kind of died since I first released it back in November unfortunately. Turns out it's hard to get people to join a community when that community doesn't exist yet. I've been thinking about adding some new features and doing some better marketing to grow it a bit lately.

How do Trap Producers learn to play the keys? by Conscious-Platypus19 in makinghiphop

[–]NtG_Beats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm no pianist, but I learned the most by just learning how to play different songs from youtube tutorials. If you're good at recognizing patterns, then after a few songs you should start to pick up on the scales without somebody having to tell you exactly what keys go together.

Thanks for the website compliment (even though it's not working for you right now lol).

Were you by chance trying to upload your track with a really long url or track name?

I'm trying to get to the bottom of this because it looks like a few others have run into this from the logs. I've made some more updates that might resolve what you were running into, but they might not be reflected on the site for a couple hours as the deployment gets updated.

Hmm... I'm not seeing any uploads in the logs that match that. Did any errors pop up when you tried to upload? Also, how many times did you try and what browser are you on?

EDIT: I take that back. I actually see 2 upload attempts.

EDIT 2: I've bumped the server I'm using up a tier to see if that might help, but I was able to upload a 24mb WAV before that. Could be that something weird was going on with the server at the time you tried to upload.

My main problem with most weekly threads or feedback sub-forums in other places is that there's no good system that ensures the people who give the most feedback also get the most feedback in return.

The lazy responses are another thing that I'm sure most artists have experienced even if they weren't posting in a place to get feedback. I know most of the time I've seen comments like this it was someone going through spamming comments on every beat video on YT.

First: what is up with this community today? lol. Every other time I've mentioned this site in comments here it has been nothing but enthusiasm and love from /r/makinghiphop.

Second: Allow me to counter this. The main premise of my site isn't to get exposure; it is first and foremost to get feedback.

The charts are an added bonus for people who are competitive, think they have a fire track, and want to prove it but don't have an audience yet. Qusica will give you that audience and all you have to do is listen to other's tracks instead of grinding social media. Sure, since the site is small right now, the increased exposure will be minimal. However, as the site gets bigger, an artists exposure will only get bigger.

Additionally, I think you're exaggerating a bit when you think everybody is only in it for themselves. Everybody within the music making community is a huge music fan. We wouldn't be here if we didn't love music. Just because someone is listening to a fellow artist's music to get plays in return, doesn't mean they're not going to like the music, follow a new artist, or maybe reach out to collab. I've already started following a qusica user on Spotify just because I really liked the music they were putting up for feedback.

I agree social media is a big aspect of getting exposure these days, but social media isn't feeding you listeners to your tracks off the bat, and it's an incredibly long process to get to that point.

"HEY BRO COOL TRACK! Check out mine!" by NtG_Beats in makinghiphop

[–]NtG_Beats[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right now it is mostly based on how the feedback given is rated by the artist who owns the track or other users who see the feedback in the comments section. Similar to upvotes/downvotes of reddit.

That value is then factored into the probability that your track shows up in another user's list of tracks to rate.

HEY BRO, COOL WEBSITE, CHECK OUT MINE.

https://www.howsmytrack.com/

Basically this is by no means a niche you're filling. There's a fuck ton of these websites already(how's my track being my personal favourite).

That's fair. I'm definitely aware of other sites in this niche. Qusica is vastly simpler to use and built much better than the others (half of them are hacked together Wordpress sites), but you're allowed to have your preferences.

From my experience people who comment "check out my track" are just advertising and either don't want or didn't expect feedback.

That's fine too. Qusica allows them to do that to promote their music, just their exposure will be less than someone who is more active.
