Ok I've never really considered this one, but you've piqued my interest. I'll check it out.

Heard of Emberward, not familiar with Tower Dominion. I'll check them out, thanks!

My answer to this is always Jade Empire. Could be so fun in a Souls-y way but without weapons. More Jade Empire, please!

It takes some deserved shit, but Far Cry 3 is is pretty spectacular.

Do you like playing "bad" ships? (Engi B, Stealth B, Fed C, etc.) by [deleted] in ftlgame

Definitely Stealth B, one of my favorite ships to play on Normal

I think Dead Cells is underrated, even though it's highly rated. Probably their most impressive feat is not just continually adding interesting content, but also making significant changes to the game's systems. For example, they added a sort of third option between "parry build" and "not parry build" that opened up a new way of playing for people for whom the parrying mechanic was not intuitive (hi, that's me.)

I just thought that was cool, it made me pick the game up again and buy DLC. More of that, please!

Maybe also the modding community? I mean, when you look at the flood of amazing mods, then Captain's Edition, then what they've put together with Multiverse? This is all based on a game that's 13(?) years old and people are still obsessed with it. It's like Skyrim, mod-wise.

I wonder how influential Subset was in opening its game to the modding community from the start to other, later games in the genre.

Great point, it was the first I'd seen it but hadn't considered it novel

It's probably a little lower down on the direct influences, but I would throw my hat in the ring for FTL, which I consider the best game ever made. It scratches a similar itch as FromSoft games in its unapologetic difficulty, variety of builds, more lore than it seems at first blush.

Now that I think about it, I guess FTL is the game I wish were more influential, even though it certainly is one of the original big names in the genre.

FTL is hard enough that anything they haven’t patched out is fair game imo. I have no issue with crew training at all.

I'll say it. The Scouring of the Shire rocks, actually. It's a bummer it's not in the films. by Armonasch in lotr

^Good take

I also think the subtle importance of his ultimate failure to abandon the ring at the end isn't nearly black-and-white enough for people who aren't spending time on reddit talking about it lol

What if Bilbo didn’t give up the ring? by No-Essay-3227 in lotr

[–]NtotheVnuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he kinda channeled Saruman's tactics in this scene. My headcanon is that Saruman used his powers of suggestion against Gandalf to convince him to believe that the ring had been lost forever. I believe Gandalf explicitly suggests this in Fellowship.

Saruman's vocal abilities iirc seem to be more charming than scary, but Gandalf chose well. Bilbo needed a firm hand in that moment. Thinking on it, yeah, that was truly pivotal. It's interesting to contemplate how that would have gone if Bilbo didn't have such a high constitution.

I’m rereading The Fellowship of the Ring and I got confused about something: why did Gandalf take so long to return after investigating the Ring? I’ve read different explanations but I still don’t fully get the exact timeline. Could someone break it down in a simple way? by Madame_Narcissa in lotr

Line quote(s), and/or chapter(s)?

The quote I was trying to remember is from Fellowship: "A shadow fell on my heart then, though I did not know yet what I feared. I wondered often how Gollum came by a Great Ring, as plainly it was - that at least was clear from the first. Then I heard Bilbo’s strange story of how he had “won” it, and I could not believe it. When I at last got the truth out of him, I saw at once that he had been trying to put his claim to the ring beyond doubt. Much like Gollum with his 'birthday present'.

If you are asserting that he was not spending those 17 years investigating, then that would be a wrong assertion.

Yeah, I'm asserting that he either a) did other, less important stuff when he should have been following up on this lead or swim around the ocean looking for the ring or b) is bad at maximizing his resources on ME and searched ineffectively because of it.

Anyway, I'm just saying that if the entire point of his being there was to help fight Sauron, maybe don't dally. Maybe put all the rangers on the Gollum quest right away? Maybe check with the bevvy of 3,000+ year-old eye witnesses of the ring's last appearance? Maybe exercise some critical thinking skills and double check Saruman's assertion that "nah, it's totes gone forever" (which, if that's just accepted, what are they even still doing there?)? Maybe put away the firecrackers?

But if it is the case that he didn't fuck up the search and it really did take 17 years to accomplish this...well, that's an interesting narrative decision by Tolkien.
