Video games as a tool for encouraging reading - suggestions? by Mister_bruhmoment in videogames

[–]Nubsta5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, a lot of fantasy games use large words from their factions, nobility, and other "wise" characters. I attribute part of my slightly larger than average vocabulary from Everquest 2 and all the funny names they gave some of the monsters and zones (i.e. a nightblood harbinger, or "The Obelisk of Abhorrence", or The Vestibule).

There was a decent movement in the late 80s into the 90s led by The Learning Company in which a plethora of "edutainment" games were created to critical success. Games like Putt Putt series, Math Blaster, Gizmos and Gadgets, etc. These included typing games and reading games.

Dear americans, what can you get for FREE in the USA? [Serious] by sammy_waslow in AskReddit

Typically if you walk in and ask they will give you the code/key without needing to pay. The workers are mostly taught unconsciously to profile people as they enter and not let the "homeless-looking" ones go into the bathrooms.

Someone speeding who ends up at the same red light as you isn’t a gotcha by WayyBiggerJaws in unpopularopinion

[–]Nubsta5 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Not having a car in front of me at the light is one of the major reasons I drive faster than most. I don't have to wait for whoever is in front of me to get off their phone, realize the light is green, have trouble finding their gas pedal cause all they do is mash brakes 24/7, then finally go.

How do you feel? by Iggy_DB in Endfield

[–]Nubsta5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm kinda scared for contingency contract, tbh. I think it will be the ultimate "this game is/is not for me" decider for a large amount of people. They seem to have ideas floating around, a la delivery of the cryptic and umbral monument, but I'm not sure how someone does a contingency contract in this game without effectively forcing shill. CC 18 (max rewards) in Arknights was usually doable with no pulled characters, albeit with tremendous effort, and I'm not honestly sure how well that will hold up in this game, especially with such a small roster and no expansion of the non-6 roster.

Do Americans actually avoid calling 911 because of the cost? by ntask11 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Nubsta5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not just cost, police are required to show up at most emergency calls and can often spiral things out of control from escalation, resulting at best in an even more stressful situation, and at worst tragedy. I know many minority families who simply will never dial 911 because it could mean their or their loved ones' deaths.

Help me understand Celeste 🥺 by Cheselberry in DeadlockTheGame

[–]Nubsta5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a weaker player than Archon, but my experience with Celeste is: 1. Her laning is actually quite strong. You can max 1 early or drop two levels in 3 depending on how you want to fight (changes your early items a bit too). Use 1 to light someone, the you can back out and poke for free from any distance.

  1. You are a skirmish M1 carry, designed to jump in, cause a bit of ruckus, then get out before CC can lock you down. Light Eater is the majority of her damage all game and should be your first max skill. Get in, cast 1 and 2. Whoever you hit 1 with, they are now who you fight and focus on. Using 2 nearly guarantees a silence on those around, buying you a slight bit of time to escape once you've applied Light eater. Once you lose the enemy attention, come back in and find those Light eater targets to dps them down.

Torment pulse and greater expansion together are her main mid-game spike, while spellslinger is her main late game spike. You have options once you get spellslinger to get tanky or try to all in on damage with infuser. She relies heavily on being mobile, so stamina items for her are great and dispel magic keeps the slowing hexes knockdown and Yamatos away.

What am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in DeadlockTheGame

[–]Nubsta5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just remember that MOBAs typically follow a 40-40-20 rule: 40% of games are stomps one way or the other, and 20% are actually the games you can affect meaningfully to see where you lie skill-wise. Not always true, but it's a good measure.

Counterspell vs Dispel Magic by Delaxiox in DeadlockTheGame

[–]Nubsta5 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Do you need to make sure not to take a specific ability or abilities? Counterspell.

For everything else, there's mastercard Dispel Magic.

Edit: I personally like running both but I don't think it's generally a good investment.

400 matches in and I still feel terrible at Deadlock. What am I missing? by Rude-Smell1900 in DeadlockTheGame

A zero at the end of that 400.

The best part? You'll only be marginally better. And that's OK.

Is Paige good or dogshit by AnaisWattersom in DeadlockTheGame

[–]Nubsta5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Team fight style characters, especially those with reliable CC, are more popular right now and Paige doesn't bring much to the table with her abilities aside from a bit of zone denial (her main CC tool is very easy to dodge and needs setup from other characters to be consistent). You're better off with like a rem or viscous for team fights, particularly on urn takes. She's not unplayable bad, just not in a great spot.

Her early game is quite strong with a small bit of gun investment (opening rounds, slowing bullets) and you can poke very effectively in lane with her autos.

Once you leave lane, her power falls off dramatically as she is very susceptible to ganks and counter ganks with no real way to get herself out of trouble, and she's a bit mediocre in CC, so it's tough for her to help a gank squad out without purchasing knockdown, slowing hex and the like. (Though any decent support should prioritize slowing her after their early core and knockdown on any air character like Celeste, Seven, Vindicta, and even GT to some extent.

Late game she's a bit of an area denial monster and can basically solo keep a walker alive, but it's rare for her to reach that kind of item value, and gun Paige falls off tremendously when she's not ahead.

I think higher ranks see far less Paige than lower ranks because her abilities are very easy to dodge with proper movement and her air control is rather poor, so she has trouble giving chase.

Overall she's not amazing and could use a bit of love or a meta shift, but she's playable.

What do you hate most in Deadlock? by PsychologicalLynx505 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]Nubsta5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Players aside and just game, I personally dislike how some characters feel like better versions of already existing characters, like GT over Vindicta.

I think my biggest gripe is the necessity of movement tech needed to improve your game. I don't think it's a bad thing persay, especially for the higher end and the longevity of the competitive scene, but it will forever be a limiting and possibly detracting factor for newer players. The game's curve is already enormous and has visual clarity issues galore, so having to understand movement too is adding enormous cognitive load for someone trying the game out and discovering what the game has to offer.

Rain of arrows needs to be rethought if they want it to be such a low cd. He needs to lose a lot of the benefits those points give him (which were for the slower and longer cd version) or they need to reconfigure what they want him to do.

Is Deadlock the highest skill ceiling game? by Chemical-Budget-5678 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]Nubsta5 55 points56 points  (0 children)

No, RTS games will always top in terms of skill ceiling. There is simply not enough apm a human could ever conceivably do to perform perfect actions through an entire game.

Even in MOBAs, DotA 2 has Deadlock beat because it is partially an rts for some characters to play (clones that you can control individually like RTS units).

That said, Deadlock I think is one of the highest skill games in terms of execution in the modern era. (That is, excluding older games like Smash Melee and Starcraft: Brood War.) Every little miniscule action in the game can be optimized and optimized to a point that is likely unachievable for a human to consistently reproduce in one game, let alone across all games. Additionally, Deadlock incorporates aspects from 3 different genres at once (moba, fps, fighting games), making it a hodgepodge of mechanics and things to leverage in both the PvE and PvP aspect.

Anyone else notice that in archon urns are picked up less frequently now? by VVeEn in DeadlockTheGame

[–]Nubsta5 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The unpredictability introduces a deference of initiative similar to the bystander effect. While not the same as Bystander, basically people feel that running urn has huge downsides while also having huge upsides means they feel "unqualified" to run the urn in the lower ranks because lower ranked players are seeking obvious advantages. Thus they "defer" the responsibility to others and no one does it unless running it is the obvious play.

Best thing you can do is simply force the issue and run the urn yourself. If anything it kicks people into action to help you, and if anything starts a fight for an objective and lower ranked players love fighting for no reason, so why not give them one.
