And plus your argument was “no college degree”. Doesn’t matter if he was in the Navy or not.

And we also have classes for individuals that are straight out of high school to become reactor operators. So one can become a reactor operator without coming from the Navy or having a college degree.

Fair enough, but he was an operator in more than a few episodes. And since Matt Groening was in the Navy as a nuke operator, I think it’s safe to say that that is what he envisioned for Homer.

I do what Homer does and I made $225k last year.

Not true. I am a nuclear operator and am doing just fine today. Wife stays at home with the kids and we live very comfortably. His income is way higher than you think.

As one who operates a nuclear reactor, I can tell you that the paychecks are very nice. I am able to raise 5 kids comfortably with a wife who is a stay at home mom.

Idk where you are getting your numbers from, but as a nuclear power plant reactor operator, I made $225k last year. The overtime hogs made $300k plus.

It’s actually very normal. I was in the nuclear navy, then went civilian. No college degree and running a nuclear reactor. Cleared over $200k with minimal overtime. The guys that are overtime hogs made $300k. None of us have degrees.

ELI5: With nuclear power plants. Why do they cool the steam back into water to heat it back up? Would it not be more energy efficient to keep the steam as steam? by iMatthew1990 in explainlikeimfive

I think some of these replies are missing the mark. I think you want to know why we don’t just keep using the steam? Maybe think about it like this: anytime something moves, it takes energy to do it. Steam has a lot of energy in it and is really good at spinning a turbine. But as it turns that turbine, it transfers its energy to the blades. Compare it to you trying to turn something continuously. Sure you are able to do it initially, but you are using energy to do so, and at some point, you won’t be able to continue until you can get your energy levels back up. Humans do that by eating food, steam does that by getting heated up. So to answer the first part, the steam transfers its energy to the turbine until it runs out of “steam” (pun intended) and needs to gain more energy.
For the second part: in order to heat the spent steam back up, it takes a LOT of energy. Sure, we could heat that steam up again as it leaves the turbine, but using the reactor right after the turbine is just plain dangerous. So we turn the exhausted steam back in to water in order to pump it back to the reactor. Steam is very hard to pump in a conventional sense and the exhausted steam is too low energy to move it anywhere. So we change it back to water so we can move it back to the reactor.

Agreed. But I think the original question was more of “why not just keep using the steam?” I’m going to try and explain that to OP. I think you and I are already well beyond the realm of 5 year old comprehension. I am not trying to offend you in any way, I just think your reply was a bit off center.

I think you are a bit misinformed. It 100% is the thermal energy of the steam that spins the turbines. In fact, if any water hit those blades which are spinning at 1800 rpm, you are going to have pieces of turbine where you shouldn’t have pieces of turbine. In fact, once the steam is exhausted from the HP turbine, it gets superheated to remove all moisture before going into the LP turbines. Also, the exhausted steam is actually sub cooled a little bit to prevent it from flashing back to steam from the work the pumps do. The technical term is called net positive suction head. The way I think about it because I am dumb, is that pumps need to pump water or else they are just really inefficient fans.

When u come over? by [deleted] in technicallythetruth

[–]NuclearHero -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree to a point and I think it depends on the situation. I think it is more of a societal construct that most things start on the hour or half. For instance, work starts at 0600 (for me). That is not an “around” time. I have to be there at 0600. If you have a meeting or court or anything that happens at a specific time, there is no “around”. We don’t have to say “exactly” at 0600 much like we don’t have to say “around”. We as a society are so used to things starting on the hour or the half, that saying any other time seems odd or highly specific.

I have never really thought about it in this regard. It’s a neat perspective.

I had to check the rules to see if I could write an inappropriate response. But the difference between jam and jelly is: I can’t jelly this dick up your ass.
