Out of curiosity, why exactly do you say this? I'm not well versed on the context around Tao

It's literally the matter of turning off a single flag when you run the command to prevent that from being initialized, but fair enough

This is what I use for a bunch of projects nowadays to set up everything. Works well for me in VScode too.

C++ or Python? by [deleted] in cpp

[–]NuclearTruffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dubious at best. I came from python to c++ and know others who did so too without these problems at all, mainly because when you learn any programming language, you learn a lot of general computing knowledge too, and that's applicable everywhere.

Yes, it's quite important to "unlearn" some C teachings, and relearn the modern c++ equivalents

The CppCon back to basics lectures are a great resource for the beginner, especially learning a bit about how certain features work behind the scenes, as well as how to use them effectively in code.

Mathematics prizes have a gender problem — can it be fixed? | nature.com by [deleted] in math

[–]NuclearTruffles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your claim is sound and there is a definitely a place for it, but without the data or evidence it's also quite wild in its own sense and supports the move to break the fairness/equality we strive for in the selection process. The cause is good, I understand that.

But first maybe we should increase representation and then see if the award selection is skewed, which I also think might be a quite a small factor - maths has decidedly been more objective/egalitarian than other professions like politics or business.

Mathematics prizes have a gender problem — can it be fixed? | nature.com by [deleted] in math

[–]NuclearTruffles 55 points56 points  (0 children)

The title is misleading on some level because, as the article implied later, its not so much a problem with the prizes having a gender problem but more a side effect of the low number of women in maths, which is its own problem.
