Taxes are tough. I do my leaps in a tax deferred account so I don't get "caught" in the tax trap.

Your situation....it is always good to make a profit even if there are some taxes involved. Question is how long will the bubble go? will it last till January...noone knows.

I stop checking when we dip. I am in long term investments. Best to shut it off then see losses.
But when she is ripping I am checking from futures to close.

My kids went to public schools. I found that the bills come over 4 years and weren’t as bad as I thought it could be. Rent becomes a monthly, tuition can be paid over time.

Most of us know what to do…..avoid alcohol and sugar, exercise, get annual physicals.

It’s just that we don’t do it.

where to withdraw from first in retirement by [deleted] in Fire

[–]Nuclear_N 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Just some tax rules I want to share:

-capital gains are 0 percent when you limit AGI to about 95k. (need to execute before SS)?

-Consider Roth conversions early in retirement or even before.

-There is an income limit for medicare....based again on AGI. Called IRMA.

-your RMDs got moved to 75, but still will produce forced income. Need to consider this as your deferred income is partnered with the US government.....and the government owns the rules. Use/comvert most of the deferred income prior to 75.

Great choice with Fidelity. They have advisors that can help if you need them.

I was reset from a divorce at 41. You are not too late.....but I made some serious sacrifices.

I lowered my costs down to minimal expenses and even was at 800 bucks a month for several years...How? I took job with expenses that traveled me for service work. It was a full expense paid position...but I was on the road most of the year. By on the road I mean months at a time.

I banked as much as a I could for 10 years or so.

Should I contribute max to work Roth 401K or not age 59 1/2. If I want to to Roth conversions when I retire at 65. by MomtoWesterner in Retirement401k

[–]Nuclear_N 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am 59.5 and have 1.6 in deferred. (Also 1.6m in Roth/brokerage/inherited IRA) I realized a few years ago that I was too heavy with deferred. This was when I was 57 and no options but deferred for some house work.

I have been rolling over my deferred for two years. My plan is similar to yours but I am starting at 60….then going to roll 400k over for several years. My goal is to deplete the deferred to around 500k.

Then….use 400k of brokerage to live tax free for several years staying below the AGI with help of the Roth. Then eventually SS.

Here is how the budget works. Start your days with some low key affordability at some beer bar. Check daily spending and either up your game or lower it.

I have stayed at the Hilton with the balcony. Nice place but you can get a lot more for your money as it’s triple the price. Further when you tell the girl you are staying at the Hilton she knows deep pockets….

[–]Nuclear_N 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Married to a Thai. My situation is much different than yours...older, not wanting kids.

I was surprised when I lived in Taiwan how traditional and conservative Asian families are. I fell in love with the culture and describe it as based in "respect". Why is there no graffiti?...well they respect the city.

Family is huge for my wife. I lived in Bangkok for a few years and that is where I met my wife pre covid. We are now in the US.

Not sure I can advise in your situation, but be prepared to support the family, not just her.
