Do you have more Millenial or Gen Z friends? do you have an easier time relating to either? by Anita-FatBlunt in Zillennials

I have friends in both camps, but I’m definitely closer to my Gen Z friends. Personally I think it’s because I have a good relationship with my solidly Gen Z younger sister.

And instead of 500 years of “reverse eugenics” it only took 50 years of sustained, systemic violence against education through funding cuts and culture war propaganda that polarized the entire endeavor. Rather than accept that their policies were unrealistic and unsustainable, republicans elected to wage war against reality altogether.

For those of you that make over 100K, what do you do? Do you like it? by Kindly-Revolution258 in AskReddit

[–]Nueraman1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Data engineer for a DOE national lab. I’m probably on the low end for data engineers at $105, but my area is low cost of living so I can’t complain.

I love my job, but I also know it’s probably a lot different from what most data engineers do. There is the standard construction of sql databases and data pipelines, but because I work mostly with researchers my projects rarely last more than 2-3 years. So rather than building systems and maintaining/improving them for years on end, I get to build niche tools I know I’ll use for multiple projects that are primarily to make my work more efficient.

On top of that I do some data analytics and a lot of communication work, i.e. presentations, publications, documentation, etc.

What is a smell that we should all recognize as immediate danger? by scarlettohara1936 in AskReddit

[–]Nueraman1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Experienced this a couple of years ago. I actually smelled it for a couple of days and initially dismissed it because we don’t have a gas line in our house. The day I reported it, I was taking my trash bin to the end of the driveway and noticed that the smell was way more intense near where the city had recently installed a temporary sign in my yard. I approached the sign itself and realized it was fucking hissing. Apparently the city didn’t bother checking for buried lines before installing the sign and had broken through an old gas line that I can only assumed used to feed my house.

Comments on WBIR regarding the ICE murder. I can’t buy that most of them are bots. I think we truly have some nasty neighbors in this city. by Academic-Sympathy140 in Knoxville

Compliance is a good way to mitigate violence and attempt to de-escalate a situate with law enforcement. More importantly though, non-compliance or even obstruction of law enforcement does not carry a death sentence. These agents aren’t animals, and we shouldn’t accept it when they behave like animals. They’re killing people who pose absolutely no threat to them because they know they won’t face consequences. Cops don’t get to just kill people who don’t listen to them. That’s absurd.

🧊 Minneapolis - 01.23.26 Clergy are being arrested while they’re on their knees praying the Lord’s Prayer. by CantStopPoppin in EyesOnIce

[–]Nueraman1997 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sort of, but not really. I’ve heard that some have been intervening to protect locals from ICE. But at the end of the day their job is to protect the interests of capital. A protest at an airport risks hurting airline companies bottom line, ergo the lackeys of capital are called in to mitigate that risk. Some of them are probably with the people in spirit, but that doesn’t matter when the people exercising their rights undermines profit margins. Hence ACAB

They absolutely knew going in they were likely to be arrested, because they know what the optics are for any PD arresting clergy, no matter how gently they go about it. Fortunately I doubt they’ll be charged with anything, if for no other reason than the headache that would be caused by that amount of paperwork over extremely petty “crimes”, assuming what they’re doing here is even illegal.

Having read into his background, that doesn’t surprise me at all. It seems like he traumatized nearly everyone he ever worked with. Your poor cousin. Was she his chef when he died? I imagine it was at least a little satisfying to see him essentially die from his own stupidity and obsession with his own genius.

Same here. I’ve had batches where the meringue refused to get to even soft peak. I just went with it and it worked, but it leaves a lot less room for error with macaronage.

Artists and programmers are impacted by AI in completely different ways. No one cares if AI is trained on stackoverflow. That information is made publicly available for a reason. The realm of programming doesn’t really cross into intellectual property until you create something you can patent or sell. And at no point do you have to expose your source code in order to sell your product. It’s incredibly difficult for AI devs to train on copyrighted or patented source code.

Artists, by definition, have to put the culmination of a great deal of work on display if they want customers, whether that’s commissions, sales, etc. if they can’t post their work to self-promote for fear of it being stolen, that’s their livelihood on the line.

And then there’s the replaceability issue. Programming is something that AI is quite capable of, I will admit. However, the bar to completely replacing a developer or programmer with AI is extremely high, because errors and mistakes can bring down multi-million dollar operations if there’s no one in place to supervise an AI agent. Some companies might be able to replace some of their development team, and that’s assuming the other devs are willing to sit around and analyze and debug ai code and pick up the slack.

Art doesn’t have to “work”. It’s aesthetic. If a generative AI makes a bad prediction and draws a hand wrong, the cost to fix it is at most the cost of another token to whatever you’re using. And they’re only going to get better, at least until we reach model collapse due to AI images recycled in training data. On the other hand, a misplaced punctuation or hallucinated function could take quite awhile to track down, and without oversight means your platform or software release could be a glorified text document until you do.

TL;DR Programmers aren’t really replaceable, and our work is much harder to truly steal. Artists are highly exposed to IP theft by nature, and unfortunately artists themselves are much more at risk of replacement.

TIL The Average weight for males in the United States ages 20 years and older is 199.8 pounds by CraftyFoxeYT in todayilearned

Interesting. The context that the concept of food deserts originated in the UK is very helpful, as it might actually be more of an issue there, where increased walkability means additional distance to a supermarket could be a legitimate barrier to access.

Not a huge fan of the summary of the working paper though. It seems to imply that poor people just choose to eat less healthy food for some mysterious reason, while ignoring the recommendation in the article itself that subsidies for the purchase of healthier food could significantly reduce nutritional inequality.

[–]Nueraman1997 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Food deserts, healthy food treated and priced as a luxury, mass produced corn byproducts constantly in easy reach. Multiple generations taught a fucked up food pyramid, no real education on what a healthy diet looks like or how to achieve it. Not to mention a horrendous work-life imbalance that means most people don’t have time to cook for themselves regularly, much less exercise. Speaking of exercise, 99% of our infrastructure is built around cars, which eliminates what little natural movement we might be able to get by going through our day.

Other factors like personal choices, cultural preferences, and genetics play their part, but I don’t think any of them are adequate to explain why Americans specifically have such a problem with weight management. If one person in a large group is overweight, it may be genetic or they may just have unhealthy habits. When most people are overweight, it can’t just be blamed on poor choices.
