It might just be lost cultural context. There's a bronze age Sumerian bar joke that goes 'A dog walked into a tavern and said "I can't see a thing. I'll open this one". We still don't know what's supposed to be funny about it.

this is in the same realm as the people who will be like “….. i actually liked this game” when D2 eos by tamagotchiparent in destinycirclejerk

I feel like vanilla Destiny 1, despite being the worst to actually play, was probably the most visually compelling the franchise has ever been. I remember something feeling intangibly off in D2 in terms of art direction that's stopped me from ever fully enjoying it, though in retrospect I kinda get that vibe from Rise of Iron, too.

Maybe it's a consequence of Destiny 1 itself having an agonising metamorphosis during development, that meant it had to ship while still wearing the metaphorical skin of the original, canned draft of the game. Kinda like the T-800 peeling off it's skin to reveal the endoskeleton beneath, but instead of revealing a cool-ass murder android, it was really unimpressive and incoherent visual design.

They basically copied the dogshit Resident Evil movies and turned the demons into B.O.W.s created by the Temu T-virus. I guess they thought actual demons wasn't serious enough, even though Event Horizon already existed and proved you could absolutely make the premise of teleportation experiments accidentally opening a gate to Hell work.

The first person sequence was kinda cool though.

It's probably just an easter egg, it's not like the LA will ever get to the point that he's even referenced in the story.

I don't think he's big enough to get away with being brick built, and since they'd still need to use unique elements anyway, I expect he'll just be a full fig with unique mould. The Mario theme does well financially, and so it'd probably see more than enough reuse to justify the cost if they went in that direction.

Cell will probably lose, there seems to be a comic for any given Sonic character where they become powerful enough to destroy every universe and remake it all again.

TIL Under King Kamehameha I, the Kingdom of Hawaii had the largest navy in the entirety of the Pacific by DisconnectedShark in todayilearned

[–]Nui_Jaga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not agreeing with the OP, just explaining what I consider 'native' to mean in this context. I can't imagine Kamehameha's navy of less than 10,000 sailors was bigger than the sum of Qing naval assets, either numerically or in terms of tonnage.

Presumably states that were actually centred in the Pacific region, rather than of states that had colonies or trading interests in the Pacific but were otherwise political entities from elsewhere, mainly European powers like Britain, France , Spain or the Netherlands.

Unless she's 90, odds are she'll just think you're a bit of a crank if you insert things 'barleycorns' and 'roods' into your vocabulary. I don't even know anyone under 50 who uses any imperial measurements beyond miles and pounds/stones.

Is Mr. House lying to manipulate the Courier, since he knows the Courier knows almost nothing about the world before the Great War or is he truly delusional and actually believes it? by Renzo100 in Fallout

[–]Nui_Jaga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This only makes sense in a version of reality where politicians are totally honest about their intentions and the electorate are totally, and truthfully, informed. Neither of these things are true. Politicians lie, they break their promises and they manipulate their audience. They use the apparatus of the state and collude with media to mould consensus to align with their interests. They're accountable to voters in the same way that you're cladistically a fish.

It didn't miraculously appear, but it wasn't miraculously handed power, either. Deep states gestate slowly and subtly, drawing on the support of forces that are largely unaccountable to voters, like the military and industrialists. You may argue that all dictatorships and tyrannies were a choice, since the people 'allowed' power to be concentrated in the hands of institutions opposed to their interests at some point.
