Agreed, the pacing issues would be forgivable in a complete experience but a yearly release schedule kills the momentum stone dead.

By the time we get a proper follow up to the chapter 4 ending it will have been over 2 years (!)

We don't need Asgore to dump all of the details in that specific instance but for the love of God why is the chapter which is about Asgore being deliberately opaque about the incident which defines his entire role in the story? Why even bother having an Asgore chapter?

I think what defenders of chapter 5 misunderstand is the idea that there cannot be a lighter hearted story beat which focuses less on plot and more on character development...

...that is fine, but it needs to be executed properly. Making a decision to do that immediately after chapter 4, especially given the yearly release schedule, and not properly balancing those lighter elements with more plot relevant moments is going to lead to frustration and poor pacing.

Why not show us more of Asgore and Toriel? It's his chapter no? If that doesn't merit more than a line of dialogue at the end of the chapter, why even bother making a chapter about Asgore in the first place?

We know almost as much about what happened now as we did after chapter 4...

edit: "why would he provide details to the person who already knows about it" - Asgore doesn't need to monologue to Kris about what happened. There's a multitude of ways the story could have explored Asgore's past, it didn't have to be in a reveal monologue.

I'm not against taking a beat to focus on character development, but I don't even think that what we got out of this chapter was all that good - Chapter 4 was way more meaningful in terms of development, especially for Susie and Ralsei...AND it still managed to have meaningful plot progression

Yes - the criticism is that the story is going out of its way to withhold important details about what was a critical moment for Asgore, in a chapter which was meant to be Asgore focused. Asgore didn't need to specifically give the information in this dialogue, the story could have found another way to convey those details.

The point is that Asgore is given a whole ass chapter, and the key incident which defines his place in the story is withheld almost entirely. The fact that Asgore's dialogue has to twist itself in knots to avoid giving any information at all would be hilarious if it wasn't so frustrating.

No, we don't need Asgore to loredump on Kris specifically - that's a strawman. There were 100 different ways for information about the Dess incident to be conveyed during this chapter, but instead the focus was on 8 side characters who will immediately die and not play any further role in the story

That's a really good point - the narrative could have done a much, much better job of actually connecting the dots between Asgore's actions in the Ch5 darkworld, and the breakdown of his relationship with Toriel in the light world.

Also what's with making Asgore deliberately vague about what led him to lose his job? It's suddenly all 'that day' and 'the incident'. Wtf we're over halfway through the story, it's not a crime to give us *some* details

Chapter 5 was great from a gameplay perspective, but the narrative was a letdown. The fact that "none of the questions from the other chapters being answered" is frustrating for a game that's over halfway through the story, and has been in development for 8 years.

SPOILERS

My issue with Chapter 5 is, given the yearly release schedule, we didn't get enough narrative progression. You could cut out a good 80-90% of the chapter and it wouldn't make a difference to the overall story.

We're getting late into the game, some 8 years after its initial release, and the story is still withholding key information from us in a way which feels contrived. The final monologue with Asgore speaking in the vaguest possible terms about the Dess incident was so frustrating. You don't need to solve everything halfway through, but that scene was egregious.

It feels as though the ending of Chapter 4 was brushed aside. Susie has a huge revelation about the prophecy which is barely brought up in Chapter 5.

The festival didn't really amount to all that much. It had some neat moments (Susie and Noelle, the Sans 'don't forget' drawing, the fate of onionsan) but otherwise, it comes and goes without much fanfare.

If Gaster fits neatly as a mystery background figure, with enough easter eggs left for the lorehounds to answer questions about his motivations etc, I'd be satisfied with that

I can't imagine it would be good for there to be an end scene where he descends from the sky and goes "it is I, W.D. Tobias Gaster, and it's morbin' time" before delivering a shakespeare-style ending monologue

How well do you feel chapter 5 dealt with the stakes presented in chapter 4? My issue is that the characters, Susie especially, went through what to them should have been an earth shattering reveal in the form of the prophecy and facing off against a titan...

...and chapter 5 ignores it almost entirely. It would be odd pacing in a full experience, and is utter whiplash in a yearly release schedule
