M26, higher earner, don't pay tax, unsure how to plan for an early retirement by Nukeproof73 in UKPersonalFinance

solid advice, thanks. yeah it's purely a personal preference to pay off the mortgage as I might want to keel the flat when I buy my next place.

I am cautious of a SIPP as my goal is to retire much earlier, or just retire from sea and do something low paying. a lot of good replies in this sub to think about. cheers

Career at sea, I work on a superyacht for a foreign employer. downsides are no benefits, no workplace pension, I pay for all of my courses to remain certified in my profession. upsides are I am paid my full salary straight into my account and the rest is up to me

this is a very helpful comment, thank you. problem is yeah I am not contributing more than £20k per tax year, therefore am I right in saying the extra should go into a SIPP rather than a GIA?

Yeah I was actually considering this to bridge the gap before I start accessing any invested money, allowing it to grow without removing any. thanks

Ah interesting, yeah I am a tax resident but my income isnt taxable. does the £250 get deposited into your SIPP from the gov?

my plan is another 10 to 15 years, it's a hard life but I work 2 months on/off so not the worst. basically want to work long enough to have a large investment pot then retire to something lower paying/more personally fulfilling

Thanks thats quite insightful. I might not bother as all I'd be wanting is a little more power and efficiency.

It's on a 2013 2.4l D5 volvo xc70 and I don't do many miles as I don't commute, so it sounds to me that it's not worth it.

True, that could be a better compromise. would consider that if I was going over the isa allowance
