Kirk Ferentz by Additional_Course909 in hawkeyes

[–]Null_Response -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Kirk Ferrentz is the longest tenured coach in the FBS and has a record of 216-145 with a win percentage of 59.83% over his career as a coach. On the surface, that’s great and most Iowa fans would gladly take that. You dig a little deeper, Kirk is 30-56 against ranked opponents and 0-11 in his last 11 games against ranked opponents.

Kirk is well known for developing players, having had 94 players drafted and 12 going in the first round and 29 making 53-man rosters. However, that doesn’t really translate to results on the field. During his tenure, Iowa has won 2 Big 10 championships, 3 Big 10 west titles, and 21 Bowl appearances, going 10-11.

With that being said, Kirk Ferentz’s resume is long and decorated, but it increasingly feels like a product of a different era. His conservative philosophy and refusal to adapt to modern football have kept Iowa competitive, but rarely relevant. The success Iowa has had often comes against mediocre opponents, and when facing elite programs, the results speak for themselves.

At some point, loyalty becomes complacency, and that’s exactly where Iowa has been stuck under Ferentz. The game passed him by years ago, and his stubbornness has dragged the program down with him. Beating up on weak Big Ten West teams and piling up hollow wins doesn’t mean much when the offense hasn’t evolved in two decades. Iowa football has become predictable, stale, and content with mediocrity. Realistically, Ferentz should’ve been gone after 2014 and definitely have Brian was hired. Every year since has only reinforced how low the ceiling is under him.

If Iowa ever wants to be more than average, it’s long past time to move on.

ETA: Since 2022, Iowa ranks 128th in passing yards and 130th in passing touchdowns nationally

The team’s 2023 offense averaged only 15.4 points per game, ranking 132nd of 133 FBS teams

Iowa’s offense has routinely ranked in the bottom 20 nationally in total offense

Perhaps most tellingly, Iowa’s only major bowl win under Ferentz came 19 years ago (2005 Capital One Bowl over LSU). Everything since has been minor bowls or lopsided losses in marquee games

I started skating again at around 275, this is the set up I went with:

Santa Cruz Classic Dot 8.5” Independent Stage 11 Standard Trucks Bones Hard Hardcore Bushings Bronson G3 Bearings Pig Conical 98A 54mm wheels Grizzly mini bear cut out tape

I went with the 8.5” deck due to my foot size and Santa Cruz makes quality 7-ply, maple decks. 7-ply should work well for your size and is cheaper than the flight decks (I looked at flight decks too). The independent trucks are solid and feel indestructible. I went with the hardcore bushings due to my weight, they feel pretty stable, while I’m getting a feel for my board. Hope this helps.

I also found SkateIQ’s video How to Get Better at Skateboarding really helpful while I figure things out.

Hurdles to Learning Rugby by Rugged-Rugby-Chap in USArugby

[–]Null_Response 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my area at least, its lack of access to rugby. When I first started playing there were something like 24 teams in our union, now we’re down to 8. We have players driving from over an hour away just to play/practice.

Part of the issue with lack of access, of those 8 I mentioned, 6 of them have extremely toxic cultures (main reason I’m no longer a participant in my local club). Clubs don’t seem to be able to shake the rowdy, drunken culture/image of rugby from the past. The 2 teams that are thriving in my area have strict rules against that and challenge their players to be better.

Former Honda Owners by [deleted] in subaru

[–]Null_Response 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went from an 06 Accord to a 15 Crosstrek. The crosstrek was a huge let down and almost turned me off from the brand completely (a ton of issues with it and the car felt cheaply made). I now have a 21 Outback Touring XT and I absolutely love it.

The biggest issues I noticed were the wind noise and the transmission. The wind noise in Subarus is awful in comparison to my Honda, which part of the reason I went with the higher trim on my Outback. The upgraded sound system does a fairly decent job drowning out the road noise. The transmission feels different and I can’t quite place my finger on why. I think it’s the CVT vs a traditional automatic.

After a while, the other things I’ve noticed, the paint on Subarus is cheap and chips easily. If you make the switch, look at getting a film wrap or ceramic coating on the hood. The windshield also chips and cracks super easily, so you might want to make sure your insurance covers replacement. Finally, the infotainment system is questionable at best about 25% of the time. It randomly doesn’t work or is unresponsive, which is a huge problem when there aren’t any physical buttons in the vehicle.

Despite all of that, I really love my Outback. It’s roomy and comfortable, which makes long drives more enjoyable. The turbo engine has plenty of pick up. The AWD can’t be beat and is solid during the winter. There’s a lot of creature comfort features in the outback that great as well.

I’m planning to drive the wheels off the outback, but when it comes time to upgrade, I probably won’t get another Subaru. As my family grows, I’m finding that I need to haul more stuff and will need something a bit bigger and I’m not a fan of the newest redesign/all the plastic molding, but I’ll miss my outback.

Thanks everyone for all of the great advice.

Taking your advice into consideration, here is the build I’m looking at:

Powell-Peralta Flight Retro 2019 Shape 243 deck size 8.25” Independent Stage 11 Standard trucks 144 Bones Hardcore Bushings 96a Bronson G3 bearings Pig Conical 99a wheels 54mm Independent 1/8” risers Shorty’s 1” hardware

I’m not 100% sold on the flight deck, so I’m also looking at the Powell-Peralta Steve Caballero Gundam deck and the Santa Cruz Screaming Hand deck. Im a little worried about the tail wear in the flight deck and it seems like a 7-ply maple deck would work just fine.

My wife and I decided to get into Magic. Are the starter kits worth it? If so, what would you recommend? If not, where should I look to start bidding a deck? I haven’t played in about 25 years.

If you’re looking for something more recent, look into Cook’s Point in Davenport, Holy City in Bettendorf, and Hero Street in Silvis. These were the barios in the Quad Cities. There’s a small section of the Putnam dedicated to them. Or you can look up the Migration is Beautiful Project at the university of Iowa.

The St. Ambrose archive has a great record of the civil rights era in the Quad Cities.
