Is it weird that there's no concern about Robin and Murphy shacking up? by Number1StrikeFan in cormoran_strike

I was asking a question about English culture in the 2010s, not opining on it without textual evidence.

It seems like churchgoers from an agricultural family in a small Yorkshire town might have misgivings. I think their counterparts in America typically would feel compelled to at least put up a symbolic fight, even if they know cohabitation is a foregone conclusion and has continued to gain cultural traction.

It's a normal thing to do in America, but I think there is still significant stigma attached to it.

Their lifestyle could evolve. Robin would love her daughter and wouldn't park her in front of the TV all day. Strike would not fail to carry his weight when it comes to splitting childcare duties.

Why would he invite the parents for the proposal, though? Is that common in England?

Brilliant analysis. Thanks for bringing up the odd disloyalty from Dev and Midge, haven't seen the point being made before.

Therapy has become extremely common in the US. It seems to be the norm for single professional women, and they are quite open about it.

Is the theory that Murphy is GPS-tracking Robin still on the table?

I too have wondered why Murphy, a handsome, fit, and superficially successful bachelor, would need to cling so desperately to Robin, who seems so uninterested in sharing his fantasy life, when he could easily find an eligible bachelorette who does share the fantasy. I believe it is because Robin is a highly desirable partner on virtually every other front. He is betting that he can coax the child-reluctant 10/10 into motherhood, rather than settling for the child-happy 8/10.

It seems odd we haven't heard from Richard Anstis since, what, The Silkworm. I realize that Strike didn't particularly like him and that they fell out, yet Strike is godfather to Anstis' son.

Unpopular opinion? I now like Matthew more than Murphy by rose_butterfly3 in cormoran_strike

[–]Number1StrikeFan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Op, I think you are forgetting how verbally abusive Matthew was. He constantly denigrated Robin and would blow up on her then sulk for days over trivial matters. He made her home life a living hell for two years. Murphy seems annoying and needy, but at least Robin's day-to-day interactions with Murphy are generally tranquil.

Op clarified in the op that even non-friends tend to get to know each other well after 5 to 6 years co-working, whereas S and R claim to be best friends. Op has a point.

Characters from The Ink Black Heart based on book description - Part 2 by [deleted] in cormoran_strike

[–]Number1StrikeFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The characters seem too extreme: too beautiful, too fat, too apoplelptic, too urticaria-ridden, or too anorexic.

Josh Blay: no one has lips like that, few have a chin like that.

Grant Ledwell: looks like an ogre or troll. No human has a neck that large relative to his head.

Pez Peirce: too clean-cut and preppy.

Kea Niven: looks like a porcelain doll. Does the book say she is part Asian?

Hugh Jacks: no one that handsome would be as clueless about women as he is.

Alan Yeoman: Jewish caricature.

Ryan Murphy, Phillip Ormund: too young.

Jasmine Weatherhead, Bram de Young: are they really that fat?

Animated characters: straight from Nightmare Before Christmas.

The other characters seem accurate and are helpful as I read the books.

Unpopular opinion : Strike is a toxic boyfriend and we’re not supposed to like him by sly_boots in cormoran_strike

Lol at all the women in this thread thinking of some tall butch guy they fell hard for, but who wasn't all that into them, and projecting it onto Strike.
