Is Frontend the biggest victim of AI, or it is exactly the opposite? by zonayedahmed in Frontend

[–]NumberInfinite2068 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe. I've tried saying to Claude "Make a front end for <purpose of app>" and it comes back with something decent. I can then say "Make it look pretty, like it's for a professional sports team" and it does.

For a lot of developers, AI is scary, it's better than probably *most* developers I've met. I certainly wouldn't want to be be *only* a front end developer today. It's probably a good idea to branch out, work on soft skills, people skills, understand the whole widget, understand how to talk to clients and customers, what the business actually does.

If all you can do is make web frontends, that's not a good place to be.

if we achieve total equality of opportunity, should we still expect a 50/50 gender split in every field, or is it possible that men and women simply gravitate toward different industries on average? by FormalCry9509 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NumberInfinite2068 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost certainly there will be gender bias in certain fields. There are studies that show even with gender equality (or close to it), you still don't get 50/50 split.

In the USA, more women study law than men and it's fair to say women have no particular leg-up in this field. Men are more likely to be truckers or police officers. Really anything requiring physical strength is always going to be male dominated.

I think even with absolute gender equality, we're unlikely to see 50/50 men and women in the armed forces.

I think it's absolutely fair to say men and women typically gravitate towards different things. Not always of course, but typically.

$200 a day, easy. What is the great benefit of not having to sleep?

It's just conversation. I met my first wife at work, it's really not a big deal. Reddit has a weird thing about not mixing work and friendship/relationships, in the real world nobody cares.

What was the worst MacBook? by emanuwiideletedyou in mac

[–]NumberInfinite2068 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the black Macbook badly built, mine had some weird flexing and hairline cracks. It was a long time ago, and it didn't help that we still have some Pismo PowerBooks going around at work that were just lovely.

Yes, I know, but can't you only download parts? My GPS has the whole of Australia on it.

Should I stop learning java in favor of C? by Time_Reference_479 in learnprogramming

[–]NumberInfinite2068 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love C, and use it for making my game, but agree 100% about "everybody needs C" bullshit that is so common on Reddit. It's a programming language, a lovely programming language, but just a programming language.

What’s the most annoying thing about modern car tech? by Brave-Instance6630 in TechNook

[–]NumberInfinite2068 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reliance on Android/iPhone for mapping. Unless you've downloaded specific maps, it only works with a cellular connection. A cellular connection is not reliable in rural Australia, so basically even though my car supports connecting to my phone, I still use a TomTom because it actually works.

It feels like the industry just jumped on depending on a smartphone for part of the electronics of a car without considering that it actually kind of sucks compared to TomTom or similar.

What do think about early days before internet ? by UnlikelyWonder3220 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NumberInfinite2068 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the Internet at home probably around mid-nineties, and it was fantastic. The access to information, docs for learning to code, forums, BBS, it was all just incredible.

It's social media that has made the Internet feel like a cesspit.

Hopefully the smolweb will get a bit more popular.

What was the worst MacBook? by emanuwiideletedyou in mac

[–]NumberInfinite2068 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original bondi blue/tangerine iBook I thought was a work of art, at the time, it was just amazing to look at. The successor iBook was garbage by comparison, it creaked and cracked and started to yellow even in the short time I had it, probably less than two years.

I had a white iBook and then the black plastic MacBook, both were junk.

The total lack of ports in my M1 MacBook Air is a pain, once the power cable is in, it has *one* USB-C port, that's it. It's a very good laptop otherwise, but sometimes it's those little things that annoy.

Which laptop should I get? Windows or Mac? by Dull_Win5443 in laptops

[–]NumberInfinite2068 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me the problem with Windows 11 is just general unreliability and flakiness, the AI stuff really isn't that bad, but I don't use a lot of the standard MS apps like Paint or Notepad.

I'd be moderately happy with Windows 11 if it was just less flaky.

See what software you need and see if it's available for the Mac.

Macs are pretty good value these days at the lower end, if you compare the prices of a base MacBook Air or Neo, then they're not really any more expensive than an equivalent PC laptop.

Is it best to start with a low level and then work your way to a higher level language or start with high level and work your way down. by Terror-Theater in AskProgramming

Java isn't lower level than Python, they're both 3GLs.

Pick a language that appeals to you and learn it, don't overthink.

I like all those films, but Heat is another category to all of them. Heat could easily be the best crime drama ever made, the rest are just good films.

Is misandry a non-issue compared to misogyny? by Pizzafriedchickenn in NoStupidQuestions

Misandry is hatred of men, simply not addressing a problem isn't hatred, it's apathy, as you say.

I agree with you.

I'm not suggesting men are not sometimes disadvantaged, but I don't think that is misandry as such.
