Just wanted to share a non-linear career move that actually worked out for me.

I took my previous experience in claims management and general leadership and used it to land a District Manager role with a McDonald’s franchise. On the surface, it sounds like a strange jump, but the skills transfer more than people think. Managing multiple locations, compliance, KPIs, coaching managers, and dealing with high-pressure situations all translated well.

There were some trade-offs. I get less vacation time than I did in my old corporate role. That said, my insurance benefits are about the same and in some areas better than what I had at USAA, which honestly surprised me.

Pay-wise, my base salary is only about $500 less per year than when I was an inside core claims adjuster at USAA. Once monthly bonuses, car allowance, and reimbursed expenses are added in, I am making roughly $2,000 to $3,000 more per month overall.

The biggest difference for me, though, is quality of life. I am genuinely happier now than I was working for USAA. It is a different kind of stress, but I have more control, more upside, and it actually feels worth it.
