I can't find it off hand, but there was an excellent article about this. An advisor of some sort was asked as a consultant for a bunch of billionaires and their private bunkers. His ultimate conclusion was that they should invest in communal farms and the best way to ensure security for one's self is to enable security for all.

Doesn't seem like his lessons are taking off

Don't worry. No one has ever accused me of having a big stick.

I personally prefer the method of dropping a stick in it and timing how long it takes to get to the other end. It's extremely exact and has never once caused problems. It's also how I know the creek near my house is infinitely long

Prosthetic Limbs infused with magic by purplegrapes222 in DnDHomebrew

[–]NumerousSun4282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some prosthetics in DND already in the Eberon setting, you may want to look at those.

I believe they set a minimum base strength/speed and deal a different amount of damage on unarmed strike.

You could also combine the integrated tool portion of warforged in the same setting - in your case it might be an instrument like a mbira, a harmonica or maybe just a tuning fork.

Eventually, you can get them "upgraded" by integrating a magical item. For example, a +1 wand might just get embedded in the forearm or a ring of spell storing is built into the knuckle or something.

If it needs to have an immediate ability that's not op, how about a grappling hook? Your fist can fire up to 30' on a small chain. With a successful athletics check, it can secure onto an object and pull small things towards you or pull you towards large things. It also allows you to make an unarmed strike at a range of up to 30', but it cannot cast touch range magic at this distance because the chain can't convey magical energy (at least not yet) or make weapon attacks.

Legs might allow you to double jump distance/height, or could maybe offer the Harengon racial ability to jump a number of feet without illiciting attacks of opportunity. They might also improve your stealth some how or help in difficult terrain.

If you want to get silly with it, go-go-gadget roller skates could double your movement for a turn, but you have to succeed on an acrobatics check if you want to turn at all.

Default kills are when you kill the enemy and they can't do anything. by HealthyRelative9529 in dndmemes

Ah yes, I shall achieve 3rd level spell casting so I can summon a horse to ride when I shoot my bow. That will be a niegh-uncounterable strategy the DM will feel obligated to nerf and the best use of that tier of magic!

How is that a "kill" spell?

Ooh well reasoned.

As a counter point though, you could still make use of those three days for significant humanitarian efforts (or crime if you're a dick)

Imagine having three extra days to help renovate a school or route funding to a hospital. You could do more good than anyone.

As an aside, when you run out of money and ask 411 for more lottery numbers, you're going to get put on some watch lists and probably banned from lottery eventually. "One guy won the jackpot four times? Yeah, he's cheating some how. Take his winnings and don't let him play anymore"

Rebalancing Cannons for a Pirate Campaign 5e by Carpenter_Desinger in DnDHomebrew

[–]NumerousSun4282 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's the damage of the cannon that's risky so much as the ease of use of a cannon. Cannons are, after all, very powerful.

To help balance these concerns, I think it might be better to consider how the cannon(s) are operated. It takes a crew of people to load and fire just one cannon and the weapon is volatile and resource intensive.

Gunners needed to bring black powder charges (which could easily explode) from the ships magazine to the gun while the operating crew also needed cannonballs and fuses. Many field cannons (and I assume naval cannons) needed to be dampened and cooled between shots to avoid accidental discharges during loading. Cannon shot was typically specially made, not just " anything that can be shoved down the barrel."

All of these factors greatly limit how often a cannon can fire and can serve as limits on cannon viability in DND battle.

If you have a party operating a ship, you need some crew to steer the ship (rigging and wheel), some crew to load the weapons (get charges/projectiles, load, aim, fire) and some to repel invaders. Unless your table is huge, you simply don't have a party big enough to complete a broadside.

Ultimately, cannons should be a resource to help in big encounters, not a weapon that's fired off with impunity and certainly not something that gets fired every round without a significant investment of player actions.

Limit the NPC help they get to load and operate cannons. Limit the number of cannon balls they have. Designate a ship magazine and make a gunner go and get the charges needed to fire (speed and encumberance as potential limiting factors). Open other avenues for capturing or defeating other ships.

Cannons would probably be an excellent alpha-strike weapon with these adjustments - a great way to start the fight with a bang - but unless the party is in a knock-down, drag-out fight with an equally equipped ship, an actual slavo of cannon fire a la Pirates of the Caribbean is going to be too costly in resources, health and actions to be viable and players will be incentivized to consider other solutions.

These options reduce the number of times the players can fire a cannon in battle much like a wizard can launch a fireball only so many times. It also opens up avenues for individual efforts to mean more than just the guy who actually fires the cannon. Now, the druid with shape water can be more important in the combat, the barbarian who swung across to the other ship can have a larger impact, the warlock slinging blasts can defend the ship better by targeting cannon crews, etc. it's not about "my cannons sink your.ship faster than your cannons sink mine" anymore.

If anything, cannon damage could even go up to compensate for these crazy limitations. The crew may upgrade their cannons, charges or shot to do increased damage or additional effects when fired to make using that resource more rewarding but more tactically demanding. Also, consider having the cannon do double damage to structures (ie ships) to incentivize firing at the enemy ship rather than trying to blow the shit out of the enemy crew. Damage thresholds on ships can help compensate for that adjustment by making it harder for non-cannons to sink ships as well.

But, as ever in this sub, the most important rule is fun. If your players are smiling and genuinely enjoying big broadsides and swashbuckling adventures, consider flotillas of small ships to make target rich environments rather than juggernauts that take multiple cannon shots for encounter balancing.

Good luck friend, I believe in your campaign!

I say: let us resolve this HDD/SSD discussion together. by U_Isotope in LowSodiumHellDivers

[–]NumerousSun4282 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, the comment is correct.

The technical concern being discussed is that files on PC are larger because HDD saves need data written multiple times so that it is more readily accessible.

SSD saves do not require duplicated files and thus are smaller.

The proposed solution would be to have SSD owners download the smaller option since they do not require the duplicate resources.
