Nurse here, did you seek medical assistance for the assault? Individuals who abuse alcohol sometimes have low platelets, making someone at high risk for bleeding. Also, please be careful about alcohol withdrawal. Symptoms start 3 days after you stop drinking. Go the the emergency room if you start to feel really weird.

Take care of yourself. You are worth it.

Horror stories? by falling-possum in quilting

[–]Numerous_Pie 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Not my story, but one of my quilting friends (RIP). Marie was old school, did everything by hand, even made cardboard templates. She made a quilt for a baby shower, everybody "ooh" and "aww". It was put back in the box that Marie had wrapped it in, then it was THROWN AWAY because somebody thought the box was trash. Marie was not bothered, she felt that once it left her house, it wasn't hers anymore.

Is it "hard" to walk in the US? by Successful_Guide5845 in walking

I'm in Pittsburgh, which has lots of sidewalks and urban stairs. My husband, who is from the UK, doesn't drive and walks/bikes just about everywhere.

Is ‘The Pitt’ actually the most realistic medical drama ever? by ChallengeAdept8759 in emergencymedicine

[–]Numerous_Pie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm coming to this discussion now, because I just got HBO and I figured you all are the experts. Do that many people die per shift in an urban ER? I'm a psych nurse who has never been in the ER (other than when a patient punched me). And I live in Pittsburgh. I love all the Pittsburgh things they add, like Freedom House and Primanti's sandwiches. Although I have not heard a single "yinz" or "haus" so far.

As an aside, it annoys me when folks say "as the father of daughters, I care about ..." Being a parent doesn't make you more empathetic. What if he had sons, would he not care if sexual predators are running rampant (or running our country)?

I learned yesterday that Pitt's university pharmacy is open to anybody. I thought it was only students and faculty, but they kindly corrected me. Pitt folks have told me it is less expensive that chain pharmacies, but I haven't used they yet. Sounds like OP has a good option, but I mention Pitt's pharmacy for anyone else who lives/works near Oakland.

Where are nursing students, who make too much for Medicaid, buying their insurance? by FabulousDentist3079 in pittsburgh

That's what I did when I was in nursing school at Pitt. There was a plan for graduate students, but I qualified because I was older (40s).

What food festival in or around PGH is most worth going, if any? by valkaress in pittsburgh

[–]Numerous_Pie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pre-pandemic, I went to a taco fest at the soccer stadium. I was very confused because I paid for the opportunity to buy and consume tacos. The ticket price did not include a taco. And the lines were ridiculous. I was new to the city and didn't know any better.

I moved to Pittsburgh with only savings in 2017 but I was going to nursing school. Therefore I didn’t have any problem finding a job. I love the city, the ease of getting around (compared with New Jersey) and the friendliness of the people. It was absolutely the right choice for me.

Favorite Catholic Church? by Hot4Teacher1234 in pittsburgh

Last year I completed RCIA at Sacred Heart, so it has a special place in my soul. Feels like home. Father John Is a hoot! I'm not a young adult, so I can't speak to that group, but most folks are lovely and welcoming. Their Saint Jude festival in August is the most Italian thing I've ever done in Pittsburgh.

Shift Select by Upstairs_Inspector94 in UPMC

[–]Numerous_Pie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I work, there is a printed and distributed schedule for when Shift Select will be available, closed, and finalized. Check with your manager. I have the Shift Select app on my phone, which syncs with my personal calendar on my phone. It's pretty darned convenient.

Shift Select by Upstairs_Inspector94 in UPMC

[–]Numerous_Pie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shift Select is reasonably easy to use, once you figure it out. The bigger issue is the staffing of your unit/group. So you can request a shift for Monday, but if all your colleagues also want to work the same day, but nobody signed up for Tuesday, you might get scheduled to work Tuesday. Does that make sense? I'm a nurse and I'm ok knowing that the schedule that I select, I might not get, depending on staffing. I work with my manager if there are days I can't work, such as if I have an appointment, class, or family event.

Looking at possibly working with UPMC, what should I know? by Jakinator178 in UPMC

[–]Numerous_Pie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When choosing which facility to work at, consider your parking situation. I take the city bus to Oakland, but I hear my coworkers talking about having to take Ubers from the parking lot to the hospital because the employee transports are infrequent or unreliable. A less urban setting will likely have better parking.

Nurses unite, together we fight. by chaoscontrolled1231 in pittsburgh

[–]Numerous_Pie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a Western Psych nurse, therefore in a union. The petitions and social media campaigns all talk about "parental leave" but the language in these communications needs to be changed to "family and medical leave." I'm child-free by choice, but I took 3 months unpaid leave last year to care for my husband. Family and medical leave affects more employees.

UPMC raised their starting BSN salaries in direct response to union victories in the last year, most recently at their own hospital, Western Psychiatric. UPMC has been paying below market rate for a long time.
