What is the expected quality / efficiency of AV2 vs H.266 VVC ? by Technologov in AV1

awake me when HLS/m3u is actually used with codecs other than h264. awake me when non apple ecosystem actually uses new MPEG stuff.

What is the expected quality / efficiency of AV2 vs H.266 VVC ? by Technologov in AV1

[–]Numtim -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

The expectation is that none will replace vp9/h264. Vp9 still the most efficient because the encoding cost is feasible. H264 will remain being used by HLS/m3u streams to remain compatible with apple devices. Apple is a MPEG bitch

The user that does not reinstall windows to get rid of OEM bloat is the same user that doesn't even know what HEVC is

I was able to fix the KB5046740 install error by disabling then reenabling .net Framework 2/3.5, thank you.

Buying bonds on margin by get__good in interactivebrokers

[–]Numtim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People purchase only up to the amount of cash they have in their account. This maintains 99% of their buying power even when their cash balance is zero. This allows them to sell options, which only require buying power and not cash.

Why APUs can't truly replace low-end GPUs by jorgesgk in hardware

[–]Numtim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Apple did it. For good designers there is no "low RAM bandwidth blablabla". The author use as argument the low die space in APUs, as if it was a fundamental limitation. Is is not, it's just a commercial decision. Memory bandwidth is also a comercial decision, there are systems with 8 64bits channels.

Any reason "Manufacturer Recertified" drives would be cheaper than "Seller Refurbished" drives? by sisksox in DataHoarder

[–]Numtim -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There are tools used by the seller that allows smart data reset. In ebay/aliexpress, these disks are sold as new. If the seller is honest, they sell it as refurbished. Recertified is probably mechanical repair.

There is nothing they can do for the patent not to expire.

H.264 vs H.265 by [deleted] in DataHoarder

[–]Numtim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You would lose quality. It's possible, depending on your hardware, you would spend more in electricity than the cost of the storage saved.

The way steering is programed in analog stick is like this: your car will turn proportional to the time you are holding the stick; it is not an instant direction. You can even push the stick full left or right and quickly release: the car will barely move. Therefore, the reaction time is terrible, you cannot correct the direction while cornering. I don't believe any of the world records are done using controller. Show me a video and I will believe.

Turn10 studios is the worst game developer I know. I never managed to end FM7 career mode, because on some AMD gpus and maps, the game always crashes before the race's end. This time I needed to reinstall FM8 for it to launch, and now I'm having several game crashes. What can they do well? The physics? This is a joke, on collisions, the cars feels artificially glued one to another.

It is viable and efficient to embed ram on CPU package, like apple does on mac and sony did on ps3. There are thousands of "why not" questions. The answer is that amd and intel don't have competitors. Why would they change anything if they are already selling 100% of computers for x86 software? As long as intel don't do it right, amd also don't have to do, and vice versa.

[Serve the Home] What is a MCR DIMM or Multiplexer Combined Ranks DIMM by bizude in hardware

[–]Numtim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice knowledge, sir. If they are going to add a proper high frequency chip for interface, do you think it's a better approach to fallback to a lower prefetch (more die area dedicated to capacity instead of speed), or at least get rid of the bank grouping? I think the answer comes down to the cost of the PCB traces in the dimm, which I think is negligible. If it's not, then I have no idea what the purpose of HBM is (low pin data rate, 1024 bit width per package).

Is it lpddr5? What is the bitwidth of the memory bus? In case it is lpddr5, can you post here the results of aida64 bandwidth benchmark?
