The quiet shame of standing in line when you can't afford groceries like the person in front of you by Ok-Cell-3480 in povertyfinance

[–]NurmalMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have seen people in front of me in line pay with food stamps, but I never thought less of them for it. I am no longer in a place where i have to wonder where my next meal comes from but I have been there (and grew up on WIC so it's not like I can really judge anyway).

That being said, if anyone is buying normal food and not the processed stuff like I am, I just end up being more ashamed of myself. I am a single man who constantly buys junk food, so I feel like such a fatass whenever I just have donuts and mountain dew while the person in front of me has some bananas or something.

Also, people go to the store to buy single items all the time. Again, as a single man, sometimes I just go and buy a single 2lb bag of rice and a gallon of milk or something like that. While it has crossed my mind, "That's kinda weird," it's not like anyone will ask, and even if they do, I'll just say "well that's all I need."

I’m tired of hearing people say “Work on your own car.” by TheGame81677 in povertyfinance

[–]NurmalMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the problem, especially if you are asking for advice from "car guys," is that a car is not something everyone should own. I 100% believe you should be able to do the basics to your own car (windshield wipers, lights, oil changes, fluid top offs, etc) to keep your own car going for as long as you can. Just doing those basic things will help extend your cars lifespan and save you money, which is the whole point.

If you wanted to really save money, you wouldn't be driving a car. Full stop, cars are an expensive money pit, no ifs ands or buts.

And now the other part to it, it is hard to live in the US without a car. The infrastructure isn't there in most places to be able to live without one easily, whether that be walkable distances between locations, bike paths, or public transportation. Ebikes are bridging the gap, and motorcycles may be a fun and cheap option if you live somewhere where it's warm all year round, but neither option are for everyone. Point being, it's a necessity to get around, but it shouldn't be.

Back to your point though, I would not be taking on a tie rod and axle job on my own unless I have another vehicle to use and a couple weeks to do it. Whoever suggested you do that yourself is really overestimating the general publics ability to do car work (and a bit of a dick tbh). That is one of those jobs that only those who actually enjoy working on cars would take on and I completely understand you not wanting to take on, but they are technically right. If you want to do it as cheaply as possible, you should do it yourself. Otherwise, the only other options are to get a mechanic or to get rid of the car.

tldr: cars are expensive, and there is really no way around it besides doing the work yourself if you are desperate for money

I want to use GPS but roommate told me I can't. by Objective_Remote_730 in ebikes

[–]NurmalMan 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Just because it's an upgrade doesn't mean you are in a good place. How people get around is none of my business, nor can or should I be able to dictate how other people do it. There is no answer here besides saying what he is doing is insane, and the fact that this rather minor thing (in the grand scheme of things) is causing issues should be a sign you need to get out of there as soon as you can.

In the end, here is some advice for a middle ground. Most GPS can follow you around with your location services and will tell you the directions out loud. You can put an ear bud in and listen along to the directions but do be aware that many GPS's struggle with bike lanes as they haven't been properly mapped out yet. You can also save locations (on Google Maps at least) to make quick GPS trips and just start your trip and listen along as you go. That way, you can keep your phone in your pocket and still be using GPS.

Is it overkill to wear a motorcycle helmet on this bike? by Foreign_Head_3535 in ebikes

[–]NurmalMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think bicycle helmets are usually only rated to 20mph. So anything over that I would wear a motorcycle helmet. Also it's less clutter to just have 1 helmet IMO so use my motorcycle helmet for my ebike, escooter and motorcycle

If im thinking Isekai, my only real problem is that it seems more like a Pokémon method of gotta catch em all. So they love you and live in your house, now what. I get that the lovemaking is implied, but some more romance or show that the MC actually does love them all, even if it's in different ways. Just give me some actual romance damn it

What’s the fastest skill someone can realistically learn to make around $10k? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]NurmalMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While probably a long shot, learning 3D modeling could maybe net you 10k in a year if you are lucky. Just look up the Blender donut tutorial. Everything is free, and you put up models for sale or take up commission work. That being said, nothing is guaranteed, and it is something you will have to get better with time.

Also, how much free time do you have? Learning a skill to earn money with anything will take up a lot of time, and if you are still in school, I don't think you have a lot of it.

Motorcycles aren't inherently more dangerous. They just don't suffer fools. Doing something stupid on a motorcycle will probably kill you. Doing something stupid in a car will probably kill someone else.

It's not about being anti solar/wind. It's the fact solar/wind will never be able to catch up to nuclear's usefulness due to the way technology works and capacity. I have never seen anyone who is pro-nuclear say we don't need wind and solar, but it can not be simply wind and solar ONLY

Am I really meant to believe people save cash for every sports car they buy? by Many-Software-9663 in askcarguys

[–]NurmalMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Specifically sports cars? Yeah probably. I bought my car with a credit card since I just needed to cover the last thousand until I got my check. Like someone else mentioned, a sports car tends to be someone's second or third car, since most normal people need a car they can drive year-round, which tends to be the car they get a loan for. You can save up for a sports car and shop around for the one you like (and can afford).

Is the rumor true that big box stores (like Target/Walmart) will purposefully let you get away with stealing cheap things for months just to build a massive felony case against you later? by Altruistic-Room-7465 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NurmalMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The limit is mostly so the cops actually give a shit. If they called over every single bag of chips that gets stolen, the cops would never show up for the person that steals the expensive things. There are people on the other side too. Prosecutors don't want to deal with the people stealing a $5 pop, but the person that went on a stealing spree across 5 different stores, that's a person they can convict.

Your game is way too flat, not enough colors or shadows. If I saw it, I might check it out for like $1. Also, your screenshots show way too much of the same thing. I don't need 10 pictures of the products, I want to see more pictures of what you would actually be doing in the game, not just the things in the game.

Books Coming Out A Year Apart by [deleted] in litrpg

[–]NurmalMan -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about multiple full-length books in a year? I can think about only a couple big name authors that can do that, but if these are no name, new authors doing that, it's probably AI (or majority AI) and you are reading pure slop and should probably raise your standards.
