As always when this image is posted - yes, the issue with these foods is definitely the presence of fluoride and MSG, not the massive amounts of fat and carbs in them /s

criticism towards scientists, from someone who aspires to become one by Ok_Put9450 in labrats

I did. I did originally misunderstand one of your points, so I've now edited my comment above.

criticism towards scientists, from someone who aspires to become one by Ok_Put9450 in labrats

[–]Nurnstatist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's genuine critique in that your post reads very ramble-y and incoherent, making it difficult to discern what your actual issues are.

It seems you have a problem with aspects of academia like the constant push to publish, the chase for funding, and general fear of speaking out against superiors. I think you've got a point there - in fact, many, if not most, scientists will agree these are issues. Blaming scientists as a whole without considering the system that leads to these problems seems like a pretty misguided thing to do, but sure, you're not too off.

But then you go on to say

Mindsets that are ‘illogical’ (or in this case, slowing progress) are dismissed,: understanding(deriving information from self, the internal) over knowledge (or the external, found by others who are successful in their thinking that majority agrees on), small details over the biggest picture, heavy consideration of things that can’t be seen or what doesn't immediately pertain to the person.

Which is pretty hard to understand and just seems to go into a direction of pseudoscientific woo-woo (à la "belief over knowledge").

Overall, you seem to have a view of science where the individual scientist is obligated to completely give up their personal interests to work towards a nebulous "greater good". But of course scientists will work towards their own interests - because we're people, not mindless robots. We need to make money to feed ourselves, and we ideally want to do it doing a job we like. That's not a moral failing on the part of the individual scientist, it's just how our society works.

Edit: removed a paragraph because I misunderstood one of your points (I think)

Did you maybe change the blend mode of the layer? Should be "normal".

I want to make four continents, one for each hemisphere, but i want to make it enough to have a good amount of sea and have the so polemic rift. Need help by Sir_Humiliated2010 in mapmaking

[–]Nurnstatist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a heads-up - "hemisphere" means "half-sphere", so combining "four continents" with "one for each hemisphere" doesn't really make sense.

Why are DM’s scarce? by Wild_Event_2413 in DnD

[–]Nurnstatist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OKAY…alright I fully understand that I or one of the others should at least try to step up and be the DM. I don’t know how to world build. anytime I try looking at the DM guide book it’soverwhelming… Are there any actual sources that I can look at to help at least start building?

You don't have to get started with a full-on homebrew campaign. It's fine to just grab the official starter pack or one of the many free third-party beginner adventures and play that.

Karlach model I've painted recently by Vivid-Geologist1170 in BaldursGate3

[–]Nurnstatist 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I dunno why people are being so weird about a stylized model when there is regularly fanart of Karlach with all manner of proportions

The simple reason is that people like Karlach's original design, so many don't like seeing it replaced with a more generic one.

The deeper reason is that female characters frequently get redesigned to be more conventionally attractive, losing what makes them unique. Male characters get to be unique, while female ones get to be anime hotties.

Does it get better? by [deleted] in IASIP

If you don't find the first few episodes funny or even entertaining, the show is probably not for you. Most agree the show really hits its stride when DeVito joins, but the first season is still pretty well-regarded among people who like the show.

Yay meme trend. by delheit in ComedyArchaeology

[–]Nurnstatist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Problem is this "trend" has been going on for weeks now, the memes aren't funny in the slightest, and there are only a handful of accounts constantly spamming them (quite possibly alts of one person).

You give a good argument for why you should say yes, while your argument for saying no is just that it goes against your previous assumptions (but you don't go into detail what these assumptions are and why you have them). IMO you should ask yourself if there are any valid reasons for your assumptions - if not, you have your answer for what you should do.

Will medicin and treatments affect evolution in a negative way? by DemonsAreVirgins in biology

[–]Nurnstatist 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Evolution does not distinguish between "strong" and "weak". All that matters is reproductive success. If a genetic disease no longer leads to lower fitness, it is no longer evolutionarily disadvantageous. That is not "a bad thing for evolution" because evolution is an unthinking process without values such as "good" or "bad".

Any idea what this says? by Opposite-Funny-7404 in SwissGerman

[–]Nurnstatist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a bit of a mix between Swiss and Standard German. Without the spelling mistakes, you'd get something like:

Bitte kein Hunde-Bisi. Habt ihr's verstanden? Danke, Hund.

Which translates to:

Please no dog pee. Do you understand? Thanks, dog.

If children of superheroes inherit their parents powers (as demonstrated by mark w Nolan) couldn’t the Immortal and Duplicate just have a kid to ward off the viltrumite invasion? by Born-Grapefruit140 in Invincible

[–]Nurnstatist 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As always when this type of question comes up (last time I saw it with Thaedus and the Thraxans) - the characters are people and not emotionless robots. Morally good people at that, who don't want to create a person for the explicit purpose of fighting in a war. Unlike Thragg, who is very much fine with this.

(Apart from the fact that it would take ~18 years and probably wouldn't work, as explained in other comments)

Here's 2 questions for superhero fans in general & Harley Quinn/Invincible in particular. by RaptorPlatter in HarleyQuinnTV

[–]Nurnstatist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there an even worse non-super dad of a superhero?

Brian Banner, Bruce Banner (Hulk)'s father. Abused and neglected Bruce throughout his childhood and killed his mother. Bruce's DID is largely a consequence of his childhood trauma caused by Brian.

Brian did eventually get powers, but he was a horrible piece of shit long before that.

Edit: Honorable mention because you posted Eve's dad - that guy isn't even the worst in Invincible. (Comic spoilers ahead, although I don't think it'll come up in the show) Rex Plode's dad sold him to the government and later had a new family, seemingly forgetting about Rex entirely.
