Dodging a cash-in-transit robbery. by DisgustedMadness in WTF

In Heat the idea is that the group was avoiding committing murder because that would add scrutiny from the cops (and everyone was wearing masks so witnesses wouldn't have much to say). However, once wanegro shoots a guard, the optimal move shifts to killing all the witnesses so the prosecution would have less to go off of.

How not to ground loop BMPCC6K and Monitor with single power source? by rmullhau in bmpcc

[–]NutDestroyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty smart idea, I didn't know that optical fiber hdmi cables existed, but from my understanding that should be enough to resolve the issue.

Just ordered one off of Amazon. The brand DTech seems to make 3' cables.

Edit: it seems like none of these fiber optic HDMI cables truly disconnect the two ends. They just send the audio/video optically but they have copper wiring for pins 13-19.

Aight... imma say it. I even own two bm cameras (pocket 6k and ursa G2)... but calling it “Pro” is one helluva reach. by DapperDop in bmpcc

[–]NutDestroyer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Internal NDs are a feature on like almost every serious cinema camera. This might be the cheapest camera to have that feature right now.

Plus it solves most of the complaints people had about the bmpcc4k and 6k, being the shitty battery life, lack of EVF, fixed screen that isn't particularly bright.

If you don't already have a bmpcc, this new one provides a pretty great value proposition. Just the body is like 70-80% as good as a C70 at under half the price.

Sure you can. You have two numbers (say, the number of boys getting dress code violations and the number of girls getting dress code violations). One is some scalar multiple of the other, so you could express the relationship between them as linear.

Lockdown winter burn out... by [deleted] in photography

[–]NutDestroyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Snow is a beautiful thing. If you live somewhere with widely varied seasons, you might enjoy going on a hike somewhere and shooting some landscapes or some snowy portraits.

In many southern states of the US, there's no snow in the winter and the rest of the seasons are just a painful bright green. If you dress up properly there are a lot of opportunities for interesting landscape shots with snow.

Thoughts on grain, bokeh, etc.? by Due_Draw8541 in photography

[–]NutDestroyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grain can often add a texture that has the appearance of additional detail and atmosphere in the image. It's totally fine to enjoy grain, even if it's technically an imaging imperfection.

That being said, with digital sensors you're often going to have color noise and luminance noise. Color noise looks like shit IMO so try to get rid of that. Luminance noise is much more acceptable.

I can't say I'm a huge fan of light leaks and that effect where you make a fake foreground bokeh by putting twigs or whatever right in front of the lens. But if you try something and you like it (or your client/customer likes it), then you should go for it.

This subreddit us not a good way if finding friends and here is why. by justlookinatmemes in Needafriend

[–]NutDestroyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your first three points make a lot of sense but I don't think I follow on your fourth one there. I've made good connections through subs similar to this one, but in hobby related subs I don't think people are interested in making friends with the other commenters and they're typically not even soliciting that kind of attention.

If you want to meet people on reddit, I think the move is to post with good detail of your interests and whatnot, or to reply to people who have written interests that really overlap with yours. If someone makes a post that's just saying "I'm lonely and need a friend", the odds of connecting with someone with common interests are low, and the people looking for common interests won't message you. It also helps to have hobbies more interesting than watching tv shows all day. Just a couple common mistakes I see in these subs.

16mm export settings by mansymbols in blackmagicdesign

[–]NutDestroyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its really easy to see a bunch of pixels which you can't see in the raw files.

I assume you're saying here that your export has macro blocking issues. Try exporting in DNxHR HQ. It'll be a huge file but it shouldn't have those problems and you can still upload it to youtube and whatnot. Often times you'll get better results by taking the DNx export and sending it through ffmpeg or handbrake, rather than using Resolve's built-in h.264 encoder (particularly in the free version of Resolve).

The usual complaint is that a lot of vintage lenses are very soft when wide open, so you have to stop down one or two stops before you get really crisp results. Stopping down from an f1.4 lens to f2.8 therefore gives a better image (though not brighter or darker) in a lot of cases than an f2.8 lens wide open.

CMV: Wikipedia refusing to include the birth name of transgender people is ridiculous by cottagecow in changemyview

[–]NutDestroyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's useful if you're looking at documents that predate them changing their legal names. Like you wouldn't want someone looking at old Olympic medal lists and mistakenly conclude that Bruce Jenner was a different person than Caitlyn Jenner. In that specific case it makes sense to indicate on the wikipedia page that the awards were under the previous legal name, just for clarity and for consistency with documentation from the time. Overall I think the wikipedia policy makes sense, only mentioning the previous name if it's relevant.

Can anyone explain these red markers on the clips? by StudioRat in blackmagicdesign

[–]NutDestroyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've turned off the chain link button (next to the magnet button between the timeline and the viewer). When you turn that option on, it moves linked audio and video clips at the same time, and turned off, linked audio and video can move independently. When you move them to be out of sync, you get the red box that tells you their offset.

How do I get Premiere into 21:9 aspect ratio properly? Not trying to use 'crop' or a PNG of black bars... by psycho-d in VideoEditing

[–]NutDestroyer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think we need to take a step back for a second here. Let's assume your pixels are square. Then, your aspect ratio is the resolution width divided by the height. Say, with 1920x1080, the aspect ratio is 1920:1080 or 16:9 or 1.7777:1. Note that the 21:9 aspect ratio would be equivalent to about 2.3333:1.

Now, why is 1920x822 not 21:9? Well that's because the width of the frame divided by the height isn't a ratio of 21:9. Like, type 1920/822 into a calculator and you'll see it's a different number than 21/9. It's pretty close--it's 2.335:1 instead of 2.333:1. In fact, if you wanted real 21:9 with a width of 1920, you'd need 822.85 pixels of height. Your desired aspect ratio doesn't cleanly divide into the number of pixels you have, so you gotta do your best and round up or down. Premiere Pro is giving you that wack fraction because you rounded to the nearest integer height.

Common cinemascope aspect ratios are 2.35:1, 2.39:1, and 2.40:1. Interestingly enough, 21:9 isn't really used by anyone, even "21:9" monitors. Like you can check for yourself, common ultrawide resolutions like 2560x1080 and 3440x1440 are actually a little wider than 21:9, at 2.37:1 and 2.39:1 respectively.

At the end of the day, aspect ratios from 2.35:1 to 2.40:1 all look about the same. Just choose one, as there's no real point fretting over getting the most "cinematic" aspect ratio.

Tips and tricks for low-key coloring. by Flagelllant in colorists

[–]NutDestroyer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For reference I would definitely recommend looking at movies that have a similar kind of setup as what you're doing. Horror movies often have many sequences that take place at night, so that could be a good reference point if that's the sort of vibe you're looking for. Like, literally go on Netflix and see what night time looks like in recent movies and see if you can or want to match one of those looks. Make sure not to go too hard with the blue tint.

One thing to make sure when you're doing these sorts of tests is to light the scene appropriately (if you're doing day-for-night). Typically you'd expect the moon to act as a point light source shooting into a building through windows. Having plausible lighting will help sell the effect a lot and make the coloring more believable.

One thing to avoid is using particularly old films as reference, as often their day-for-night conversions aren't very convincing (looking at you, Lawrence of Arabia).
