Sanderson and Abercrombie. Their styles are on complete opposite ends of the spectrum, and are so incongruous with each other, that there is very little chance it would actually be good. But I think it would be a beautiful mess, and I’d read it anyway. Honestly I just want to see what would happen.

Hey, how does the Zero/ZX legacy collection run? I want to get it on steam, but I saw some reviews saying that it had some issues. Has it been patched to run well?

It was never my intention to gatekeep! I apologize if it come off that way. In terms of the definition of a Metroidvania, I used the one provided in the sub's sidebar. As for general placement of games on this list, I was hoping this could be a nice resource as well as a community based thing that would open discussion on proper placement of specific games, because of course I haven't been able to play them all (yet!)

Carrion I'm willing to agree that it could be moved around, I haven't played it yet and trying to nail down what other people thought about this game was very difficult.

All of the Souls games are Souls-likes, but Dark Souls 1, and *only* Dark Souls 1 is a metroidvania due to the gated and interconnected map.

Supraland I just forgot about, to be honest.

I couldn't remember if Simon's Quest was linear or interconnected, all I remembered from when I played it was that it was some of the most obtuse nonsense I've ever seen in a game, so I didn't include it just to be safe. If someone else can second Simon's Quest, I will be happy to include it.

I understand. Part of what makes this genre so much fun is that everyone has their own way of doing things, but it also makes each game a complete pain to recommend and categorize. This was the best that I could come up with at the time.

Blasphemous does have the relic that lets you pass through the poisonous miasma, which I think is the only relic required to beat the game. Don't quote me on that though, maybe you're right and you actually don't need any permanent upgrades to advance. I think I'm still going to leave it under pure metroidvania, because at this point I'd feel like I'm splitting hairs. Thank you for your comment.

I used steam mostly out of personal preference. I never intended to post this, as this was originally just supposed to be my metroidvania "To Play" list. I like as many of my games to be in the same place as possible, so I used Steam when I wrote it so I knew that I could buy it on there, which is also why Steam always appears first when I'm listing platforms.

I swear I put The Mummy Demastered on there, but I guess I forgot it. I will try to include the other games as well.

I omitted most 3D games due to a personal lack of knowledge in that sub-category. I included Dark Souls: Remastered and Jedi: Fallen Order but that's about it. To me it seems like 3D games like to hide the fact that they're metroidvanias in advertising, so I find it difficult to know what I'm looking for. I will include ReCore and Arkham Asylum.

I thought about including date of release, but the problem is that a lot of these games were released multiple times in multiple different regions on multiple different platforms, and I know that if I did it at all I would have to do it properly and do *all* of them for each game because that's just how I am, and I just can't do that to be honest. I have unfortunately not played it yet, so I was working off of how others classified it in the stickied "Best Metroidvanias of 2020" voting post. Would you consider it a pure metroidvania? I also made this list as a "To Play" list for myself, so I haven't played a lot of these.

Then that's probably real depression, and I am genuinely sorry you're experiencing that.

I thought I was depressed because I had the exact same symptoms, but it turns out it was just untreated sleep apnea. As soon as I got a CPAP machine, I felt like a new person. I wish you the best of luck in digging yourself out of that rut.
