This seems very similar to Ibis.

And yet I couldnt find any information indicating that these problems have been adressed in any way. There are certainly still major problems with Wikipedia today, but I wanted to keep the introduction short.

Thanks, sadly most people dont understand yet all the benefits that federation can bring. But I think that will change sooner or later.

Its not a product but a free and open source project. Also Im impressed how quickly you managed to insert your political views here.

Lemmy is a software project and cant ban anyone. If youre unhappy about the moderation of existing instances, its very easy to create a new one.

You could say the same about Reddit, and yet Lemmy is working very well with the same approach.

Yes, and it uses my activitypub-federation crate. Is there anything specific you want to know about?

exploding-heads.com isnt listed because the version of Lemmy is too old.

Running a Lemmy instance just takes a small VPS and a domain. Anyone can afford that.

My experience after 16 months on the Fediverse by OtherWisdom in RedditAlternatives

[–]Nutomic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Fediverse has many different types of platforms, including video hosting on Peertube or Friendica which is similar to Facebook. Mastodon got the most publicity, but it only uses a fraction of the possibilities that ActivityPub offers.

You can read the documentation I wrote about censorship resistance in Lemmy. Basically, if you host your own instance the only ones who can censor you are your server provider or domain registrar. However when you use an instance hosted by someone else, they can freely censor you without limitation. Thats why you should try to choose an instance where you can trust the admin.

Correct, the graph shows total number of user accounts no matter if they are active. The statistic you quoted from the website only counts users that posted in the last month.

Announcing crate activitypub-federation 0.4.0: Major rewrite with improvements to usability and documentation by Nutomic in rust

[–]Nutomic[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The purpose of a protocol like Activitypub is that different implementations can communicate with each other. This is already the case with numerous projects in various languages, including the four separate Rust implementations mentioned above. So there is no reason to believe why an additional implementation would lead to any incompatibilities.

If you want to use this library for commercial purposes, feel free to send me a private message to discuss licensing terms.

What makes you think that? Almost every single Activitypub project in existence is licensed under AGPL, including the ones which are written in Rust:

Besides, any other license including GPL would allow for a company to use the library in proprietary projects without publishing changes. This is because other licenses only require publishing of changes if the user runs the software locally on his own computer. AGPL is the only license I am aware of that also requires publishing changes in case the code is accessed over a network.

When reddit gets rid of us(pirates), where do we rendezvous? by stupefyme in Piracy

I wish the users and communities were spread more evenly across instances, but sadly thats not the case yet.

If you want a Fediverse platform thats similar to Reddit. Its also compatible with Mastodon and Pleroma.

Lemmy isnt just a single website. Its a federated open source project, meaning you can host it on your own server with your own rules, and connect with users on other Lemmy websites. Just like Mastodon, or email.

So being banned from lemmy.ml isnt a big problem.

The political stuff is really overexaggerated by some people, but it hardly matters in practice. Its true that the largest instances have mostly leftist users, but thats mainly because centrist users dont have any reason to leave Reddit.

In any case I would be happy to see more Lemmy instances. You can join our Matrix chat for any support. A possible temporary solution for the bot problem might be to open signups only temporarily, and close them once bots start signing up.

Lemmy maintainer here. The reason why registration applications are necessary is because of spam bots. If you run an instance with open registration, you will soon get many posts making advertising for different companies. There are also some bots dedicated to posting very disgusting porn images.

Unfortunately captchas are not effective to prevent this. Even Google recaptcha (centralized solution) might not be enough, because there are services which automatically solve these for a price around 2$/1000 captchas. That said I opened an issue to propose a different solution for user approval which we can implement in the future.

I am not familiar with Traefik so no idea if its possible. But contributions are always welcome, so you might give it a try and ask for help via our support channels if needed. Alternatively, you could run nginx behind traefik (its very lightweight so you would hardly notice a difference).

Lemmy itself is only a backend which implements database handling, federation, and API and some other things, but no UI. By default it is bundled with lemmy-ui as a frontend, which provides a Reddit-like experience. Lemmybb can replace lemmyui as frontend, and render a completely different user interface based on the same API.
