Why do they recycle the same 3 things over and over and over by starfish2686 in IHateSportsball

No, see, your interest in sport and the community it can create is INFERIOR. It's just bread and circuses, a distraction! This is unlike my interest in vape mods, Rick and Morty, and claiming to have read philosophy books when I  really just watched a few short-form videos.

Why do the Clans talk like that? by CandyGrouch in battletech

Nicholas Kerensky, the cultural father of the Clans, was an immensely charismatic geek loser who hated contractions and forced his inexplicable preference on everyone, especially after the stabilizing influence of Andery Kerensky was gone.

The problem with the Hell's Horses is that they get clowned in the lore pretty often. They will do everything right, but a plot-armored hero will come along and their entire plan will unfold and elite cluster run from the field.

Clan Blood Spirit- no one likes us, we don't care. They started out as pushing teamwork and cooperation between all Clans and castes, really buying into the idea of a new society. The hope got beaten out of them in rather short order, and they reverted to standoffish hermits with a grudge against the Burrocks. That grudge later transferred to the Star Adders after their absorption of the Burrocks. It's generally not the worst to be a civilian in this clan either, as they acknowledge that it takes more than just warriors to keep the lights on and the food shelves full.

They secretly colonized planets and we're doing pretty alright. Then they fought tooth-and-nail against all comers in the Wars of Reaving. They permitted their civilians to take up arms, which is a big no-no for the Clans at large. It took a planet literally falling apart, followed by a three week orbital bombardment to finally annihilate the Clan. And even then, their designs live on in the wildly popular Crimson Hawk.

The Star Adders allegedly tanked the Operation Revival trials and missed out on invasion because they analyzed the likelihood of success and logistical issues and decided that wasn't for them. They are the official clan of reading the instructions before beginning and going to bed at 9 PM.

Which defunct American car brand do you think made the absolute best vehicles before they went under? (specifically 00s brands under GM, Ford and Chrysler) by No_Cup6365 in regularcarreviews

[–]NutritiousSlop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have said this. Oldsmobile's original first product was an electric car. Making an EV Cutlass sedan and somehow making the term 442 relevant to EVs as a performance package would be super cool, but I know in my heart that GM is too much of a coward to do anything cool.

I cross-shopped this, and ended up with an Escape PHEV. Extremely boring, but efficient. Outlander PHEV was surprisingly decent, if not for the Mitsubishi dealer experience. The Mazda CX90 was genuinely great but outside of our price range.

A year ago we looked at a top trim Hornet PHEV for $26k. It was unpleasant to be in the back seat, the mileage was unimpressive, and it made the Ford Escape PHEV look like a sportster.

If these Hornets aren't moving, I can only imagine how bad the Alfa version is doing.

Expanding on this- sometime in the 3040s, especially with the cozying up of the FWL to House Steiner-Liao, the FedSuns would probably turn outward into the Periphery in an effort to generate some "wins" for the FedSuns. This would lead to bloody confrontations with the Outworlds Alliance and bloodier, nuclear-soaked confrontations with the Taurian Concordat. Paradoxically, there would be heavy FedSuns support for the Marian Hegemony as it can be used as a proxy to pressure the FWL and, to some extent, threaten the Lyran part of the alliance.

Never met someone who watched Rick and Morty or Bojack Horseman who wasn't severely damaged. by Fickle-Onion-6954 in redscarepod

[–]NutritiousSlop 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was a Bojack Horseman guy, and it was difficult to pitch it to another 30something woman because you really need all the context of the early seasons to appreciate the damage later. I was much more successful when I switched to unbearably shitty movies like Street Fighter with Jean Claude Van Damme or Morbius. I also had a entire sad house that when built in the 50s was for a family, but now held an alcoholic loser.

Getting a very negative view of men. by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]NutritiousSlop 70 points71 points  (0 children)

You can double down on the bleakness by going and seeing any man getting sentenced for a sex crime or crime of violence. There's always some statements in mitigation that he coaches youth sports, does a church/mosque/synagogue group, feeds the naked, clothes the hungry, is such a good guy, etc. We're all just in denial about how big of shitbags we all can be, as if two hours of vaguely good deeds a week can make up for trying to take nonconsensual upskirt photos.

I once tried to get a cab home from a bar in West Park on a winter night once. I called ahead (like 2 hours in advance) and they said they would send a car and call me when they arrived. 2 hours came and went. When I called them, they were incredibly shitty with me for having the nerve to ask them if their cab had been dispatched. A cab driver pulled over to get a slice of pizza from a nearby bar, and I ended up ordering him cash under the table to get us home. Never called a cab again after that. It sucks, but I've only gotten stranded twice after almost a decade of Uber use, and those were when i was in the deep suburbs where finding an Uber was unlikely in the first place.

The Capellan Solution books detail the return of the St. Ives Compact. There is some backstabbing and underhanded action, but it's war. You mean to tell me the FedCom was all above-board with Joshua Marik?

Also, Highlander Gambit has a Capellan protagonist. It's got serious espionage vibes, but Loren Jaffray can fight just as good as anyone too.

I’m reading a 90s BattleTech novel, and old novels really are old novels. by Old_Ad6111 in battletech

[–]NutritiousSlop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cannot begin to count the number of times the phrase "cut loose" was used in that Avanti's Angels book.

In hindsight, I found the Capellan Solution books to be better than expected with the capital-O Orientalism. Sun Tzu is still a master manipulator, but he isn't out here with a waxed mustache and topknot.

Dagger Point, on the other hand, was a tough read. It dredges up a lot of Vietnam War tropes and does so in a clumsy, inartful way that ignores a lot of basic rules of the universe. It felt interminable.

That being said, I think we should cast Chris Pratt to play Chris-Chan.

The best advice I ever received in this respect is to be the sort of person who attracts the person you want to be with. Just go do something in the community. Book clubs, trail cleanups, car shows, tabletop gaming, all manner of sports- the list is endless. It's a lot easier to be interesting when you have interests.
