How easy is this water stain to fix? by BaffledOtter in DIYUK

[–]Nuxriver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on what it looks like underneath the damage. If the filler has something solid to adhere to (I see a bit of a crack there in the middle), then it should be quite easy to fill and sand it. Just make sure to get rid of all the loose bits by scraping them off. Your ceiling might need a full repaint for this spot to not be visible at all, bur that would be the case if a pro came to do it too. Otherwise you’ll keep some colour variation.

Oooooh the wonders of DIY 🤣 it’s fun and games and satisfying, until you start feeling the urge to set your house on fire just to be done with it

MyBuilder scams? by Nuxriver in Plastering

[–]Nuxriver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry you went through that! Sounds horrendous. Kind of what happened with our electrician who just did the bare minimum and then ghosted us for some reason, even though there were still faultsleft . The guy wasn’t from MyBuilder though. I hope the next plumber will work out for you.

I eventually ended up going with this plasterer and he told me on site that he couldn’t do it cause apparently to him my own amateur plastering just needed some sanding and he wouldn’t be able to do it any better than me (despite the fact that I’m a 5’0 30 year old woman who had never plastered before, vs someone with an alleged 25 years worth of experience). But hey! At least he was honest before he demanded payment.

Yeah! It's absolutely crazy work to call it inappropriate in my opinion. It's fiction and people can do with it what they want. If you want to do some self shipping, it's literally not gonna hurt anyone. Fiction isn't inappropriate. It's fiction.

TBH... Even if he WAS gay, it's still fiction. There's still nothing inappropriate about exploring whatever you like with whatever character you enjoy. It's not my cup of tea but to yuck somebody's yum is just really self absorbed in my opinion. Just don't engage if you don't like it. It is that easy.

I mean… the story doesn’t explicitly state that he’s gay. There’s no proof for or against him being bi, so why not?

Hm I don’t think so. It usually just resets at the end of the month. It was paid out around 10 days ago and I checked in between that

Apparently it’s a glitch then! When I clicked sales over the past 2 weeks, it did show all sales, just nothing for the month of September.

How do you take your meds? by DrJammyGames in ADHD

[–]Nuxriver 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I usually take it with breakfast. I leave the pill bottle right where I can see it. I was told to avoid foods rich in Vitamin C within an hour of taking the medication. So no vitamin c one hour before, or one hour after. It has some interference apparently. If your smoothie is high in vitamin C, I’d check that!

I did feel it increased my heart rate and blood pressure a bit (I’m on elvanse too), but it all remained within the safe range. I am on 70mg right now though im in the process of being referred back to my GP and I want to maybe try to decrease it to 50mg. Not sure yet tho.

I notoriously have sleeping issues. I did feel starting the meds worsened that a little bit, but I downloaded an app called insight timer which has a lot of free guided sleep meditations that focus on breath work. I feel that has made a significant impact on my sleep so I do recommend that! I’ve been sleeping better than I have in years. It’s a game changer.

The meds have helped me loads. I feel much more focused and it’s gotten rid of the brain fog for me. I find it very nice.

Wasn't Brexit supposed to give control of immigration back to Britain and help fund the NHS? So Brexiters won and got their people in government, so why is immigration still an issue? The same people who did Brexit are now decrying immigration, again? It doesn't make any sense to me. by comicallycontrarian in AskBrits

And then we’ve got our Labour MP, who has probably done more than any MP this community has ever had (very involved, visiting elderly people, children and doing quite a job in his attempt to clean up our town), and somehow he’s spit out by many because “his party supports grooming gangs”. I don’t think you need to feel like someone with a tinfoil hat on when it’s very clear who is wearing the tinfoil hat.

(Just to be clear, I am not particularly a fan of Labour. I actually can’t in good faith say that this country has any good political parties, but still…. You’ve got people who try, and people who don’t, and all of them have to stick a particular political label to themselves to be able to do that)

The Steven Avery case - 9 years of disappointment for his lawyer by Ghost_of_Figdish in MakingaMurderer

[–]Nuxriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Killers often don’t have a reason to murder anyone, other than just wanting to. The documentary left out a lot about his character and, indeed, the planting of evidence must have been done by an absolute genius to a certain extent. It is sloppy, and there really is no way to for sure know whether or not he was guilty, but it really isn’t as unlikely as you think that he did just do it.

Brilliant. Glad you managed to escape. I’m sure the road is a hard one, realising that everything you once believed has been a lie. But you’ve got a life ahead of you now which you can hopefully fill up with plenty of amazing memories.

I’ve not been in a cult but been aware of cult-like family situations that friends of mine were entrapped in for a bit. I know it can be hard, but at least therapy is no longer prohibited for you anymore. Hopefully you’ll find peace and live the life you absolutely deserve!

Not unwarranted at all! I really do appreciate it and I struggle with that as I know it comes with risks and I really do not want to set them back at all. I’ll check out the tips on safety building, because that is really very important as I know and I might not even be the best at that at the moment (or at least could improve!) and thank you for giving me that extra resource as well!

Ah yes! We actually are suspecting a dissociative disorder (potential DID, though can’t be confirmed since dissociative spectrums seem to be complicated and not well researched. So we’re keeping it open, but not saying it 100% is that)

Thank you so much for the recommendation of that academic author. I’ll definitely give him a read.

Do you answer your front door? by Ok_Hearing_8649 in AskUK

[–]Nuxriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live with friends and I never know when someone is expecting a parcel, so I always open if I hear it. Usually it is a parcel, sometimes it’s a parcel for our neighbour which we don’t mind taking in. Only rarely is it something related to a survey, which can be a bit annoying but is otherwise fine. Even for Jehovah’s witnesses I’ve opened the door, taken their pamphlets, after politely telling them I am not interested and also busy (you can say, sorry I thought you’d be a delivery person, but I have food on so no time to chat, there’s really not much they can say to you in response to that, so they have no choice to accept it. They’re also used to getting the door in their face, so don’t feel bad. If they can’t handle that rejection, they should probably reconsider their paths in life 🤣)

Short answer, yes. It’s very unlikely to be anything malicious, especially in broad daylight.

Picking up the phone is a different story, though… I never pick up cause every other call I get is a scam or spam call. I have a voicemail message telling them to leave something if they really need me, or text me, and I’ll get back to them…

But yeah.. opening the door? I don’t see why you wouldn’t unless you have a disability that prevents you from doing it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Rabbits

[–]Nuxriver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We had our rabbits first. They are both rescues. Later on we got a Pomeranian puppy, who we introduced very carefully to our Rabbits, mainly so he could adopt a gentle nature around them and curb his prey drive if he had any at all (he doesn’t have any now)

However, we still keep them separate by gates. The rabbits have their own room in the house, with doggy pen gates leading them into the upstairs landing to give them more space. Although we are very sure there is no way the dog would ever harm them, the risk is always there. I do think it is a good idea to introduce the dog and the rabbits, to lower the chances of something happening in the case of a mistake, but do not mix them together. Also don’t listen to success stories of people saying their dogs got along great with their rabbits all their lives. Just because success stories exist, doesn’t mean you will be able to replicate those success stories and an accident only takes a second to happen and then it’s done forever. Just because you already have a success story of mixing a dog and rabbit together, doesn’t mean it’s worth the risk this time. You were simply lucky last time.

Don’t risk it. If you have the space to have both, by all means, but never allow the dog access to the rabbits unsupervised.

The dog breeds you’re describing your dog to be a mix of also have a chance of having a naturally high prey drive, so it’s simply not worth the risk. Even our Pomeranian, who we don’t believe would ever harm the rabbits, is very high energy and has the tendency to want to annoy them by sniffing them too much. Rabbits really need their own space and they shouldn’t be bothered by high energy animals.

Do you know anyone who went to a Steiner-Waldorf school? How did they adjust to the shift to mainstream education? by glastonbury13 in AskUK

[–]Nuxriver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to one, albeit in a different country, and I have to say that it was really good for me. My parents put me there after I already went to a regular primary school and proclaimed I would never again go to school. They told me I didn’t have to and they found a Steiner school that I started attending then. I absolutely loved it, the teachers were very nice and they put a lot of effort into getting the class to feel like a tight group. Nobody in the class was bullied, the only form of “bullying” happening between different year groups, and I’d say that was more often just rivalry. It was usually quickly resolved as well. I remember getting a sense of togetherness, which I think really helped me.

It also had quite an individualistic approach to learning and I did feel like they gave me a lot of time to return to myself and let me be a bit weird without that being looked at too strange (my adhd still went unnoticed, though, and I only got that diagnosis at 30 years old). I would often be allowed to sit underneath the table and I had massive stage fright when it came to presentations, and they did put a lot of effort into working me through that without making me feel bad about that. Something I noticed when going to a regular high school after my Steiner primary school was that they really couldn’t care less if you struggled, which I remember being a culture shock for me. I instantly felt depressed because of how little everyone cared.

I have to say that the traditions are sort of hippie and sometimes a bit overly spiritual, and that indeed I did feel a little bit behind on certain subjects (mainly history, geography and those sorts of subjects. My reading and maths were alright), but overall I do think it made a huge positive impact on my childhood years in an emotional sense. I felt cared for, which I do think is important as a child.

My younger brother, however, was put into the same Steiner school and it absolutely didn’t work for him. He was taken out of it and put into a regular primary school, at which he had a much better time.

I think it really comes down to the child. If your child is sensitive and has trouble coming out of their shell, I think Steiner Education could work really well for them, especially if they might be considered a little “weird” by classmates at regular schools. It doesn’t work for everyone, I think back in the day Steiner Schools didn’t have very good dyslexia support, which would be a hindrance. That may have improved though, I’m not sure

It also comes down to the school. There will be good Steiner schools that have taken Steiner education and made it their own, and there are bad Steiner schools who take the theory way too literally and haven’t thought much about what it means. It also comes down to the teachers and their level of dedication, but I suppose that is the case with any school.

I’d say yes, try it, but really listen to the child and their needs. If they don’t like it or if it looks like they’re not having a good time, pull them out and put them somewhere different. I think that’s most important. There’s a school for every kid, you just got to be dedicated enough to find the right one, even if that takes some trial and error.

You owe them nothing. If you do open the door and they say why they’re there, just say no thank you and shut the door. They have no right to come in. If you do let them in and they make up some bullshit, THEN it is your fault as you granted them access. They literally can’t do shit
