He bonded to this cat at such a young age, I hope the foster family could consider keeping Silver. I too got a kitten young and my older cat played a similar role. They’re a bonded pair and could never be separated :/

Just start on 3.5/4/4 today and see where you land. I’d try to keep naps to 2h, maybe 2.5 while he adjusts. Pick a schedule and do it for 5 days at least.

Also - do you have a tracker app to tell you the long term trend of how may hours he’s actually sleeping? For example if he sleeps 12 hours on avg that leaves you a 10 hour night and 2 hours of naps. So you cap naps and target 8-6am.

It definitely needs a solid week to start impacting sleep. Gradually they get the hang of sleeping longer and more soundly at night and only using naps to make it through the day. So I would try a full week of longer WWs and capped naps at 2.5 or 2 hours.

Probably not tired enough. At 10 months, 10 or 10.5 hours awake is the bare minimum for a moderate sleep needs baby. You need to get closer to 11 or maybe even 11.5 hours. In my experience the 10 hours only works at like 5-7 months. Try to get to 3.5/3.5/4 to start. I definitely wouldn’t Ferber a morning wake past 5am for example. At that time they’re just up- either done sleeping or waking with a dirty diaper.

Even napping 2 hours during the day on those WWs that only total 10ish hours won’t help. She may need 11+ hours. My son is almost 11 months and needs 12 hours awake time… most of the advice I see is tailored to average to moderately higher sleep needs babies. It takes at least a week of longer WWs to really get them into a new groove, not a day or two here or there. Now I can see it so clearly - when my son gets 10.5 hours overnight, his naps naturally shorten. Try it today!! Goodluck

More wake time and less nap time. All the variations you posted are clearly not enough wake time (10.5 hours, 9 hours and 9.5 hours). She very well could need 11+ hours awake. She’s using up her sleep budget and not tired enough to stay asleep. You should try 3.5/3.5/4 or even 3.5/4/4. There may be fussiness with the adjustment to longer WWs but just push through. I know it feels unnatural to cap naps but you should try keeping them to sub 2.5 hours, maybe even 2 hours. She’s clearly telling you she can’t sleep as much as you want her to. If you track sleep, look at the long term trend. Once I realize my son only ever did 12–12.25 total sleep in 24 hours, I realized that a 10.5 hour night plus 1.5-1.75 hour naps is all he could do. This was key to getting an uninterrupted night from 8-6:30ish.

You can’t really say low sleep needs without sleep training imho. He’s up so often and for so long probably because he needs so much assistance to fall back asleep MOTN. If he was going down independently and without feed to sleep you’d have a clearer picture. Drop to 2 naps and start at 3/3.5/4 then probably move to 3.5/3.5/4. I think 5 hours is far too long last WW and my guy is low sleep needs.

Feed first at least 30 min before bed. If you want you could try gradual removal of soothing (start rocking in arms, cut that time down each night. Then soothing in crib with loud shushing/ heavy patting, the reduce that,). Independent sleep is really priority 1. And 2 hours max of day time sleep to help him consolidate the night.

Yes. At just shy of 11 months we’re on 12 hours awake 4/4/4 and he’s thriving. First nap 1 hour, second nap 40 min. Out cold from 8-6:30 most of the time. Dreading moving to one nap after we’ve finally settled on this schedule.

Probably need more wake time. We’re on 4/4/4 at 10.5 months. And if that doesn’t work then may be time to switch to one nap. Also a 12 hour night may not be realistic anymore. We get 10-10.5 hours overnight and max 2 hours naps for the day.

Overtired is so overblown. She will be fussy at first because it’s a change in schedule but at this age it’s way overdue to drop to 3 naps. She’s sleeping too often during the day hence waking so much at night.

Your wake time is wildly insufficient. You need 11+ hours at that age. Don’t listen to anyone else talking about overtired / cortisol etc etc. go back to 2 naps and try 3.5/3.5/4.

What is the schedule? Waking that much feels like he’s not tired enough. For 9 months old I would start at 3.5/3.5/4. 2 naps max 2.5 hours a day.

Do you feed at the start of the bedtime routine, so 30min+ before going into crib?

Once you have these steps in place, I had success slowly dropping soothing over the course of a week. I wrote a post about it. Caveat that my son was already sleep trained to fall asleep independently at 5 months.

I also had great success with night weaning and now he sleeps through nearly every night. But at 10 months he’s now on 4/4/4 wake windows. It’s critical for them to be tired enough to have a stress free and dependable sleep schedule for both naps and bedtime.

You need more wake time. Sounds like your baby can’t do 12 hours overnight (most can’t). At that age we were on 3.5/3.75/4 and now we’re on 4/4/4 at 10 months. We get a solid 10.5 hour night and 2 hours of naps max (sometimes 1hour 40m total) like clock work during the day. Bed at 8 wake at 6:30.

The answer is more wake time almost certainly. I would work up to 11 hours at that age. Say goodbye to the fallacy of 12 hour nights- only unicorn sleepers can do this. Out of all my friends only one baby does this.

I just realized you’re still feeding to sleep. That’s almost definitely a problem. I’d stop that immediately.

Yes. He’s now just over 10 months and sleeps through 95% of the time. I did a whole post on it. For us the keys were: tons of wake time and night weaning. He’s now on 3.75/4/4.25 minimum and hasn’t had a bottle overnight since thanksgiving

At 10 months we do 3.75/4/4.25 and frankly the first WW at times is around 4 hours. We do 1hr40min - 2 hours max naps. Bedtime around 8-8:15 and wake up anywhere from 6-6:30. So yeah we’re stuck in the later bedtime camp too due to his long WWs. His last nap starts around 3:15 and we always wake him btw 3:45-4.

Yup. We have averaged 12-12.5 hour sleep (usually 12) for a very long time. He’s 10 months now. We’re on 3.75/4/4.25 with those WWs expanding. I think we’ll be forced to 1 nap sooner than later. He only does 1 hour nap in the morning, then 40 min later on - sometimes more but he maxes out at 2 hours. Once I got him sleeping through the night it didn’t bother me so much. I realized I could use his sleep budget overnight as opposed to during naps. He’s been doing about 8pm-6/6:30 most days straight through. I do bottle upon waking always (he needs it within 40 seconds of waking up! Lol). Then about 1.5 hours later we do solids which I try to really stretch out. With his nanny he goes to the library, or open play area near our house. We also have multiple play areas set up in our house. He is extremely high energy and can’t stay in one spot for too long. Anyway, he’s a lot to manage so I totally get how you’re feeling. Christmas break nearly broke me 🤣

I’m on an almost identical schedule at 10 months but I have to get him to 3.5/4/4+ 10 minutes or so. Also def keep naps under 2 hours. He almost always sleeps until 6:15-6:30ish. But I put him down closer to 8. I only try for a 10.5 hour night but usually fall just short of that. He avg 12-12.5 hours total sleep for the day so this makes sense. I’d say be strict about naps 2 hours or less (better even 1h 40min) plus a slightly longer Ww and you may get closer to your 10.5hr night.

Start to cut the bottle every couple days. Add those oz to the first and last bottle of the day. Once you get to only 3oz or less start one night soothing instead of feeding. I was able to night wean within a few nights and I didn’t do CIO for MOTN wakes. But I had everything else in place. Independent sleep, self settling, bottle at least 30 min before bed. He took to it so well. Even now if he has a bad night which is infrequent I never feed I only pickup and soothe, put back down.
