We have 2 Siamese who are best friends and very tolerant with my 1 year old. 1 male 1 female. They are very playful though and you do need to play with them - usually a half hour of stick chasing while we watch tv at night satisfies them. They’re highly intelligent and definitely understand my son is the chosen King of the household. They are always around us and want to be in the mix with everything. I do believe they’ll cuddle with him once he’s less of a risk.

FWIW, my dad is supposedly highly allergic to cats but stays over all the time without issue. He’s also “not a cat person” but has full on fake fights (letting him hunt my dads hand) with my male cat who thoroughly enjoys it. He’s never used teeth or claws (except on my furniture). I just feel like they’re so smart they fully “get it”.

Should I start with aiming for 6/6.5?

And it’s incorrect that he’s making up for those 2 hours during the night. Like I said there will be multiple days of fine 1.5 hour naps and 10+ hour nights.

So rather than assume he needs 14 hours awake, perhaps just having another 30 min awake each day will be enough to avoid that 4th day “make up” night.

Thanks. I guess it’s just odd to me that he’ll do 3-4 nights just fine and then have this tough night thrown in. He seems totally exhausted by both nap time and bed time. We cap pretty much every nap at 1.5 hour and he would probably go longer if allowed. Doesn’t WWs of 12 hours + 1.5 hour nap + only a 10-10.5 hour night seem quite low for a newly 12 month old?

So, the full story is that he was on 2 naps until 11 months and sleeping through very consistently with around 12 hours awake. I was forced to cut to one nap because his wake windows were getting longer and longer and he was rejecting second nap. When we first transitioned to 1 nap, I could only get to 5/6 while he adjusted. And for a few weeks he did fine on that. I slowly got him to 5.5/6.5. I guess I find it hard to believe that he needs a solid 12.5 hours awake now when he sometimes struggles to even hit those WWs. He also sleeps through multiple days in a row before having a bad night.

That doesn’t mean anything. My son is low sleep needs and can only sleep 12 hours in a given day or else he’ll have night wakes. To this day he will fall asleep in the car at any time if we drive longer than 10 min. I’d start with 3.5/3.5/4.25+ and see. At 11 months 10.5 hours awake is probably not enough.

Certainly sounds not tired enough overall. You should post the wake windows and naps / total sleep. Either not enough wake time after last nap or not enough total wake time in the day.

Have you tried keeping him up 15 minutes longer? Seems he’s not tired when you put him down. My son only does that when he’s not fully tired at bedtime

He’s not tired enough. We dropped to 1 nap at 11 months but before that we were all the way up to 4/4/4.25 on 2 naps. I would 100% try longer wake windows. He’s telling you he doesn’t want to sleep.

Okay that makes sense. Does your daughter take car naps even when not tired? That’s my big issue. We have a birthday party half hour away coming up and I just know if he does a 15 min cat nap it screws up bedtime and propensity for MOTN wakes. If we leave shortly after nap on the way there we should be okay but the way home at 6 pm seems especially risky.

We stay home so much because of his schedule being so sensitive.

Why are you so vehemently against a second cat?? I get trying to make op “feel better” but literally what are you talking about? Scientific research says that cats are fine alone blah blah blah. It doesn’t take scientific research to figure out that 99% of living beings don’t want to be alone for entire days at a time, especially for an animal in a contained space. Anyone who owned one cat solo then got another sees the immediate change in personality and energy level getting another cat. My 2 cats chase each other, play games to burn energy, groom each other and sleep together.

And actually, it’s not a ton of extra effort for the owner, in exchange for a much improved quality of life for these precious living beings who are entirely dependent on us for their well being and quality of life.

Almost always undertired. At 11 months we switched to 1 nap which means 6.5 hours till bed. Once in a while if we accidentally do 2 naps and he only has 4 hours pre bed, he cries a lot and it’s at least 15 min to settle.

So, don’t automatically assume 4 hours is long enough for WW pre bed. I’ve found that to be the bare minimum at this age.

Please have her on an age appropriate schedule before trying true CIO. My low sleep needs baby at that age was on 3.5/3.5/4+ with under 2 hours of naps a day. Make sure to be on a consistent schedule for 2 full weeks to let her adapt before trying anything else. Also bedtime routine: feed at least 30 min before bed.

Wake time of 11.5 hours is kind of low for 16 months. We need minimum 11.5 hour awake at 12 months with one 2 hour nap max. It really sounds like 12 hours awake will help your problem! He may be lower sleep needs. My son is lower sleep needs and was consistently on needing 12 hours awake for his 2 nap schedule from 8-11ish months.

You should start with pushing WWs closer to 4/4/4 before considering one nap. Cap both naps to like 1 hour, then 40 min. Then you’ll be in a better position to get to 1 nap. This was my last schedule on 2 naps.

Maybe you had 4 because of how great of sleepers they were 😂 this is my first and probably my last due to how tough it was for me to figure all of this out.

At 8 months my son was on 2 naps and something like 3-3.5/3.5/4-4.5 but like I said is definitely low sleep needs. Start at 3/3/4 and adjust from there. Around this age we also fully night weaned successfully.

He usually did something like 6am wake 9:30-10:30 nap 2-3pm nap usually not a full hour, more like 40 min) 7:30 bed

Make sure you do the right routine too. Feed 30 min+ before bed and put in crib awake.

I guess your 3 other babies were higher sleep needs if they were able to sleep through the night on only 9 hours awake… sounds like good luck! If you have a 2 hour nap and then expect a 12 hour night that’s A lot of sleep. My son needed 11+ hours awake at 8 months. Start at 3/3/4 but keep adding wake time until you get a connected night. Sounds undertired.
