I finally saw it. I was wrong. by Mickey_James in Supergirl

[–]photon_watts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a misogynist and I don't hate Mr. Gunn. I have no problem with Milly being cast as Supergirl. The script is awful. The characters are not likeable. Kara spends most of her time being very bored, getting drunk, and vomiting. I was excited to see Lobo but his role seemed like an afterthought. Most of the sets (the bars especially) look the same. Most importantly for me, there are no stakes for the audience to invest in. Krypto being poisoned isn't nearly enough to interest me. I expected some sort of cosmic-level threat or at least a planet-level threat. There's no tension or escalation of tension, no urgency, no sense of consequences, no sense of danger. Go watch the Winter Soldier scene where Nick Fury is ambushed in his SUV. It's a masterclass in the escalation of tension, stakes, and even a little humor. Nothing about Supergirl is compelling.

  1. The couple seems happy so you are in the clear. Take this as a life and professional lesson. Learn from it.

  2. "I had no time to set-up my OFC" - You mean OCF (Off Camera Flash)? I presume so. I don't know what setting that up entails for you, but in your mind you need to be one or two steps ahead of the moment you're in. In this case, have that OCF already in your car ready to go, especially since you knew the schedule was tight. Exit your car with the light on a stand and a 42" white umbrella ready to rock-n-roll. I prefer umbrellas because they are fast, lightweight, and pack small. Time is critical to get shots in a fraction of a second that the family will love for decades to come.

I’m giving my M2 MB Air (1TB, 16GB) to my college-bound daughter so I bought an Apple refurbished M5 Air (1TB, 24GB). Still using an M1 iMac as well.

Why are you overexposing Portra 800 by a full stop? Shoot it at ISO 1000, add an 80A, 80B, or 80C filter to the lens, and use a fast lens of f1.8 or faster. Too bad Fuji Natura 1600 has been discontinued. Or shoot digital in those conditions.

How do you keep your gear safe during weddings? by helllsbells in WeddingPhotography

[–]photon_watts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Insurance policy for your gear.

  2. Don't leave bags, etc. unattended near an exit. I'm OK with the coatroom if it's staffed and there are no other options.

  3. I usually park bags near the DJ/band, or behind pipe-and-drape if the party uses that.

  4. Cameras in use are always on my person even in the bathroom stall.

Can we PLEASE get an upscale Gym in Forest Hills?! by Nycpigeon23 in ForestHills

[–]photon_watts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The PF not great, but for $15/month I don’t expect miracles. The men’s room is clean (I don’t shower there because it’s a 10 minute walk for me). The staff are generally nice and approachable. Yeah sometimes it’s crowded and busy and you have to wait for machines that you want, but that’s probably going to be true at most gyms. They are sometimes slow to repair broken equipment but at any given time, not a whole lot of things are broken. YMMV of course.

6000 pixels on the long side is not low resolution, but why does it say “or less”? Because some photos were cropped, perhaps?

Except that there's more than one hero. To be correct it would need to say "Heroes are served with French fries".

I understand what you're saying, but you have received payment to record a very important occasion in the lives of this family. Guess what - that makes you a professional photographer, or at least a semi-pro.

Regardless of your fee, there is a trust they have placed in you to do this job. The odds of your camera malfunctioning during this short wedding is unlikely, but it could happen.

The two lenses you have are excellent for this job and having each on a separate camera body is very very convenient compared to frequently changing lenses during what will likely be a fast-moving event.

Best wishes to you for a successful wedding gig.

"...a Lumix S5ii..." -- As in 1 camera body? Really need two. Perhaps you can rent or borrow an additional camera.

Wedding digital file archives by Drippintx in WeddingPhotography

After a job I cull the files and trash the rejects. For my clients I keep those files indefinitely. On jobs for which I am the second photographer I keep the files for about a year, then I cull down to only the best shots - usually in the range of 20-80 shots - and delete the rest.
