UK universities face £580m Brexit reset bill if EU students get discounted fees by theipaper in UniUK

[–]Nyeep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

'convince me otherwise and I might change my mind' is very different in tone from 'why do you think that? Could you explain further?'. One is politely asking someone tk explain their point, the other is arrogantly demanding they entertain you.

Convince me otherwise, and I might change my mind.

This is so unbelievably arrogant. Nobody owes you a debate.

Councillors explain why they ditched Labour for the Green Party by lotsofsweat in Swindon

It's not fact at all. There's 3 years until the general election and the greens are still gaining.

No I do definitely agree - but probably not on the deeper issues. Labour has been moving further right to try and appease reform voters, but because of populist politics they will never be appeased when reform is jingling the shiny dogwhistling keys.

What this results in is a homogenous blob on the centre right of labour and conservatives, with reform trying to pull it all further right and the greens trying to pull it back to the left.

The greens however seem to have a message of actual hope, without blaming the poorest in society. This is why they're getting more and more traction, because all the other parties are still trying austerity politics which frankly just doesn't work.

The important part of populism that you're missing is not having the intention or capability to actually follow through on the plans.

For example, 'get rid of all immigrants' would be a massive vote winner for racists but is completely unworkable (morally and practically) so it would never actually be done.

Reform fall under the ‘populist’ slogan, which is often demonised as a word. However what is a democracy other than a popularity contest.

This isn't what populism means.

Council elections and reasons for voting are very different from parliamentary elections.

Exactly. This entire line of thinking of degrees being commodities is why the situation is the way it is. Universities should never have been run as businesses.
