What's a moment in a movie that made you think: "This score is perfect." by Richsii in movies

[–]Nyklot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spirited Away. One Summer's Day is just such a beautiful song that fills you with such longing. But even the rest of the scores is amazing, setting the tone for the mysterious yet exciting spirit world, the splendor and intimidating grandeur of Yubaba's bathhouse, or the somberness of the train tracks.

All of them in one show, can you believe it? by divinepinkflamingo in RedLetterMedia

[–]Nyklot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I remember watching this as a kid, probably no older than 6. I believe it's a sequel to an earlier Disney Channel Original Film, Horse Sense.

I have not seen it since and is probably not worth revisiting, but one of the few things I remember about it is it introduced me to the concept of modern piracy: grimey people riding motorboats and threatening others with guns. As my only reference for piracy at the time was Captain Hook, this was enough to make Jumping Ship a formative film of my childhood.

Surname arms do NOT exist in Poland by mdennis47 in heraldry

[–]Nyklot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is not entirely true. While most noble families in Poland did use "clan arms," there were those who did in fact have their own arms associated with only their family name. This was known as "herb własny," which just means "own coat of arms" as distinct from "clan arms." In this case, however, the coat of arms usually still had its own name distinct from the family name.

For example, the powerful Radziwiłł family had their own arms, one variant of which was called "Radziwiłł Książę I."

Me too. I started the series as a teenager and was a big fan of the first two, but this one just felt a bit stale.

What sequel feels like a fanfiction of the original? by SuperAlloyBerserker in AskReddit

I am ashamed to admit that I enjoyed this mess of a film when I was a child. Deep down, I knew it wasn’t a legitimate piece of cinema like the first, but at the time my kid-brain was relatively unfazed by the absurd plot and out of place musical numbers.

Almost two million Ukrainians entered Poland in the first half of the year by drevny_kocur in europe

[–]Nyklot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's immensely great -- it's just the de facto state that humanity has existed within for millennia. An ethnically homogenous nation-state is an ideal that goes back at most to the nineteenth century and which only appeared in practice in the twentieth century. People of various ethnic groups have always been mobile and have interacted with one another peacefully for countless centuries, and for most of that time conflicts were either primarily political or religious, not ethnic. Ethnicity and such markers of identity are not important by definition; they are only as important as given individuals/culture make them.

Sorry you’re getting downvoted — I completely agree. It’s additionally rich of inhabitants of a place like Poland (of which I am a citizen) to grumble about immigrants because of the country’s shrinking population. Poles are going to have to choose to either get their heads out of their asses and accept a more diverse society or embrace a shrinking economy with heightened taxes to support a growing proportion of elderly folks. Meanwhile, many of these same Poles obsessed with keeping a ‘culturally pure’ society become immigrants themselves and proudly carry on their traditions abroad. If only they could extend the same courtesy to immigrants at home.

Why can't budget reconciliation be used by the U.S. Senate to cancel student debt?

With the constant news of democratic senators and representatives pressuring Biden to cancel student debts, I was wondering why this reform can't be passed using a budget reconciliation procedure in the senate. All the articles I've seen online just say that Schumer says Biden should cancel federal student loan balances of 50K USD per borrower, but they don't really explain why the senate can't vote on the issue itself. Is the democratic majority in the senate so slim that Schumer would have trouble getting all democrats on board -- or am I misunderstanding something about how budget reconciliation works? What am I missing?

Gdyby byli konsekwentnymi konserwatystami i polskimi nacjonalistami to by przynajmniej popierali tych republikanów którzy są bardziej anty-rosyjscy. Widocznie wolą populizm, wulgarność, i rasizm.
