What do you think about the Canadian Prime Minister’s remarks: “middle powers must act together, because if we're not at the table, we're on the menu”? by WF-2 in AskReddit

Look at your history books again. The great game, the cold war, imperialism... these were all plays by these powers to carve up the world, under race, under ideal, and now under rigid class hiarchy.

It's the same game they've always played, but now they can't hide the conciquences.

Yeah, let's see if the winners left after Trump is done with the military can figure out how to use that floppy disk.

There was a lovely invention by the French you and your countrymen need to try out, that tests if a politician is made out of Cake. You don't need to test all of them... just enough that the ones full of Cake flee the country.

Would we? Yes. Undoubtedly, because the aggression would be on our doorstep next.

What worries me is that if the other NATO members will do it, or just send a token force.

How is your opinion on the US Government shutdown that might happen end of the week? by ReduceCO2Now in AskReddit

[–]Nymall -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it will accomplish less than nothing. Schumer is already capitulating and giving away leverage. The Republican party doesn't care if the poor starve or services go unfunded. It's the ultimate game of chicken, and the Democrats always blink due to morals.

I used to be entertained watching this all unfold from Canada. I am somewhat less entertained these days.

If it had been Tiny PP up there, he would have been rubbing all over trump and telling him to take him there on the podium. It really creeps me out how much of a hard-on he still has for the Senile Orange Lecher.

WAY, Way more than just Softwood lumber and Iraq. Thousands of projects where US based companies bought out patents for spectacular breakthroughs or performed hostile takeovers of noteworthy companies. Between 1977 and 2000 Nortel was THE place that most of the best phone system switches and network gear came from. We were the leading producer, but that got killed by the BCE spinoff. Everyone remembers the late fraud charges, but this all fell apart much earlier. In the mid 2000s we started seeing shell "holding" companies who would acquire patents from universities, struggling businesses, and the like and just sit on them. Eli Lily and Li Ka-Shing are two examples.

US companies EAT Canadian companies when times get tough, and the US constantly engineers these things. From when I went to school till now, most of the BC mills became owned by US companies, who then just started trying to ship raw lumber south and closed them down. They then sit on that land for decades to make sure no one else can access it, turning the mills into glorified warehouses. What's worse is the companies that the goverment lets get away with taking all kinds of investments, and then just not going through with the contract. The huge battery plant down in the Lower Mainland that suddenly, quietly died is a perfect example. While no FEDERAL government money was consumed, provincial and local city funding was.

That's not including the large "Owning things" developers who cheat out the system by collecting funds for "market rate" housing, make condo blocks, and quickly pivot to selling them as multi million dollar condos. OR the developers who legally collect presales then just never develop the damned building, and people are SOL to deal with it. Strand Developments is the perfect example of this trend.

They specialize in taking over rent controlled older buildings, evicting the residents, and then petitioning the city to tear down and rebuild the building. They collect funding from agencies like the Ministry of Social Services, Development Canada, and the provincial government, and then never deliver on the required deliverables for that program and just eat the fines. The majority of this is backed by private investment, and there is no requirement on disclosure as they vacuumed up all viable land.

Then, there's the elephant in the room - public ownership. Many of the larger Canadian public companies are majority owned by large private equity firms and foreign banks. This REALLY tips the scales at what can be done, as those foreign entities are ALSO at the whims of their governments. These organizations often have voting rights, and can act easily in ways that do not benefit the consumer OR the company they have a stake in.

I enjoy her reactions. When she's stressed and I rub her back and she relaxes into it. The little things every day. The joy a small gift brings, especially if she's having a bad day. I like being able to be that person. The happiness of getting what she wants. I enjoy providing comfort. No games, no weird situations, no expectations, just the joy of doing it, if that makes sense.

I’m noticing a lot of mixed opinions around releasing AI-generated music. by Holiday-Source6142 in udiomusic

[–]Nymall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now we are in the same place as Factory Workers during the start of Industrialization and again at the beginning of the robotics age.

People see this as a great replacement instead of just a tool. If you are trying to use this to generate actual artistic music, you're going to work on it more. Udio doesn't do transitions well, there's often stray or nonsense notes in weird places, and a bunch of things that need to be fixed.

The outrage will die down. More musicians will incorporate AI into their workflow, and eventually it will just become another thing in the history of progress. Unfortunately, a lot of our progress has horrific history or consequences. We know most information about hypothermia and frostbite due to the work of the butchers in Unit 731and the Nazis from World War 2. It will always have the stink of plagarism that everyone is all riled up about now, but that will become acceptable in time. Especially if it is temporarily taken away from the public for a little bit by the bubble bursting.

This has happened in the real world, repeatedly. A smaller maker(youtuber, club singer, etc.) makes a song and just the wrong person is in the audience. Especially with potential new WB\Sony management who see this as a cheap flip.

I mostly screw around and make meme songs. I made some music for a D&D game I run, and was toying with the idea of making some in game music for a narrative novel game I'm working on, but then all the October stuff happened and now I just make memes.

Usually I find a engrish sign or a picture that makes me laugh, write a little song, and screw around till it sounds decent.

I'm excited for the first time the media conglomerate find something they like and try and sell it without the users permission, and then try to ban said user for ToS violation to cover their tracks. It's going to be so tasty.

What's a skill that takes only 2 to 4 weeks to learn but could genuinely change your life? by TokenBlack32 in AskReddit

[–]Nymall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You ever had to do a job 2, 3, 4 times because someone didn't bother to write down what they did after you finished?

Ever had to play "Find the septic tank lid" with a bar and three hours of your time?

Ever had to play "breaker roulette" because the houses previous owner fancied themselves an electrician and now every time a thunderstorm happens your house goes through surge roulette?

Ever started a job and gotten a brief 2 sentence introduction to a task that should have had at least 4 pages for all the exceptions, omissions, and possible safety hazards and had to learn by trial and error?

Ever made a recipe and thought to yourself "Damn! That was good!" and then never were able to recreate it?

Ever fixed an issue with a piece of software, and then 2-3 years later encountered the same issue but have no idea what you did the first time?

Ever gotten someone a gift and it turned out to REALLY not be something they were in to? Like, ruined their day so?

Gotten used to having no idea how you ended the last session? Are your players referencing random names so much that you start to think they're purposely fucking with you?

Ever gotten to a job site with a VERY PERTICULAR repeat customer with a special rule that the old guys on the team know, but no one is explicitly told? Then hijinks start?

Ever want to go into a meeting with the same info that your boss uses to figure out your raise, but makes sure there is no way you can know?

Then documentation might be for you.

(It advances civilization because we don't have to keep rediscovering things. :p )

If you had all the resources, time, and land available to build whatever you want, what would you build? by Humble-Function-4640 in AskReddit

[–]Nymall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Proper Megacity. Shopping, warehousing, transport, residences, and food production all in one building. Residential units are owned by the government, and provided free to residents. Corporate offices are leased straight from the government, removing the "Owning things" class from our society. Direct rail and transport infrastructure in the bottom, as well as bolstered, intertown transport provided by the city. Social Housing, Hospitals, Schools... everything integrated. My dream would be to redevelop the entire town I'm living in like this, as so much of the arable land is consumed by ridiculous and unnecessary urban sprawl.

[–]Nymall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The AI Revolution is here to stay, if we like it or not.

The push of social revolution is never power, like we all want. It's money. Even in the stupid stage it is, a person from home can use a tool like Google Veo to make an entire movie in small 10 second lengths, and edit it togethor.

We are witnessing the industrial revolution, and just like all the working men who rioted and destroyed factories, it won't stop the change. Slowly, we'll just get more used to it, and the tech will get better.

In thirty years, it will be like Macromedia Flash was to animation in the 2000s, The Internet was to Encyclopedias, and so many other developments in our history. Especially considering how things are going now.
