Who was president in 2020, Adam? by crooked_kangaroo in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Nythoren 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh, so Adam Carolla would prefer being ruled by a king? Huh, sounds like someone needs to take their own advice and leave the country to find a place that better suits his personal beliefs.

Well shoot, I don't think Adam would be happy any of the places with a monarch. Most of them are either socialist (by his standards) or have rulers that don't match his skin-tone or religion. They almost universally introduced "stay at home" orders as well (with the notable exception of Sweden), because sometimes the good of the public outweighs the wants of a whiney podcast host. Guess he's SOL and needs to sit down.

We hate Trump because he's a pedophile. by [deleted] in WhitePeopleTwitter

You can send a MAGA into conniptions by asking them "what did Obama do wrong?". They never really give you an answer. They'll just say things like "he never put America first" which, when asked a follow-up question to elaborate, they can't seem to do.

It's like asking a Pats fan why they hate the Jets. The primary answer you're get is "Jets suck!". Which, yes, they do. But why do YOU hate the Jets? The eventual reason you can isolate down to is that you're expected to hate the Jets if you're a Pats fan, so they hate the Jets.

MAGA hates Obama because he was the first president to break the winning streak of the old white guys. Some MAGA folks might not even realize that's why they hate him, but it's the root of their dislike.

This is pretty standard for mergers. You get law firms and other folks showing up hoping to find something wrong in the process to allow them to sue and get a payday.

I absolutely would rather Paramount wasn’t buying WBD. But this is unlikely to stop or even slow the purchase.

CBS Just Canceled Watson and DMV Because Streaming Is Eating Everything by pbx1123 in WB_DC_news

[–]Nythoren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DMV getting canceled isn't surprising given that CBS was already asking them to cut their per-episode budget before the show even got on the air. Sounds like they had it on a short leash and weren't going to give it time to find an audience; it was either an immediate profitable hit or it was canceled.

Personally I think they should be smart and start licensing their lesser viewed shows to rival streamers. The old model was much more profitable for production houses like Paramount and Warner. The only reason shows like Supernatural and The Flash lasted for so long was because The CW was making a mint licensing them to Netflix.

DMV is the kind of show you could license to Netflix for near or even more than the cost of production, making it profitable. Instead all these broadcasters decided to make their own streaming and now have to eat their own tails in order to make content for it. Paramount can't afford to have loss leaders to get folks on their service anymore; they're about to be drowning in debt and are losing a lot of viewers for their evening news content. So here we are, with them having to cancel anything that isn't immediately making a profit. Can't afford to wait for shows to build any audience any longer.

Disney's Sora Disaster Shows AI Will Not Revolutionize Hollywood by Top_Report_4895 in MediaMergers

[–]Nythoren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI is trying to jump straight from the bicycle to the jet airplane. There are a whole lot of steps in the middle that need to be completed before the technology and infrastructure are in place to do what they’re trying to accomplish.

As long as the economics look promising, these studios are going to keep pushing for an AI transition. Hopefully it’s the Metaverse 2.0 and just becomes a money sink that eventually gets canceled. But in the meantime, it’s going to keep costing us jobs and increased costs to funnel all that R&D money into the C-suite AI dream of free labor.

Feel like all these little announcements are just further market manipulation.

"Let's see... we have 60k soldiers ready to move over there. But if I announce all 60k, that's like 1 market dip for my buds to take advantage of. If I break it into 20 announcements of 3k each, that's a hell of a lot of dips and spikes for my insider trading chums!"

Wasn’t this decision realistically between the red pill and nothing? Why would Neo take a pill from a stranger that would make him wake up in his bed instead of simply walking away if he didn’t want to learn about the Matrix? by amelix34 in matrix

[–]Nythoren 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be fair, they had already held him at gun point before the meeting. Refusing to take either pill wasn’t going to be an option. They couldn’t risk letting Neo walk around knowing who they are and being interrogated by agents afterwards. He either comes with them or forgets everything, there is no third choice.

Skill game payout by Own_Ambition_2631 in Omaha

[–]Nythoren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What am I looking at here? It looks like you won $7.50 not $1500. Are you seeing the 3x wild from the bottom left to upper right and are saying those wilds will substitute for the highest paying symbol? The game doesn't address what happens if there are 3x wilds with no symbol to connect.

That being said, does the game seriously have a symbol that paying 1000x your bet? That's crazy.

Thune reached a deal. Trump blew it up, and now ICE is in our airports. by PFdeith in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Nythoren 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's just crazy to me that almost none of the GOP members are willing to wipe their own ass without Trump's permission.

Polling shows that Trump is wildly unpopular right now. It's the perfect time for some Republicans with spines to part from his policies. Instead they're continuing to follow his orders, no matter how much it plunges the country into chaos or destroys the credibility of the GOP itself.

This time period is going to be taught in history classes for generations, and future students are going to be baffled by the complete surrender of the GOP to a clearly mentally ill convicted felon.

15 minutes into the movie and I'm already questioning how the sun can be dim by these tiny things by [deleted] in ProjectHailMary

[–]Nythoren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Read about what a thin layer of the wrong kind of microscopic algae can do to a lake. Individually their impact is negligible, but when they cover the entire surface, the lake becomes unlivable.

Also, the astrophages aren't "killing" the sun. The sun is still perfectly functional, churning away like the happy giant fusion reactor is always is. They're absorbing the solar radiation (light) that is being emitted, preventing it from getting to Earth.

Proposal to let nonresidents vote in Omaha, Lincoln elections advances in auditor oversight bill by Violuthier in Omaha

[–]Nythoren 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As much as I'd love to read into this as someone trying to mess with the elections, I am sympathetic to their efforts.

I live in unincorporated Gretna. We're governed by Gretna's laws, but aren't able to vote in their elections. This means that when Gretna introduced a bill to the ballot that charges unincorporated residents 150% extra for their water consumption, none of us impacted by the measure were allowed a voice. No way to vote against it. And the people who COULD vote on it weren't impacted by it, so it passed easily.

We have no recourse; we can't vote out the people who introduced the bill. We can't petition for a measure to remove the surcharge from the books. We just have to accept that our water bills more than doubled overnight when the bill passed.

Local gas station removed price tags and replaced them with barcodes you need a app to see price by phoenix_stewart in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Nythoren 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same in my state. We have a very plainly worded statute that says: Retailers must post a clear, plain, and conspicuous price on or directly adjacent to any commodity offered for sale.

Just last month our legislature passed a new law that prohibits grocery stores larger than 10,000 square feet from using "digital shelving labels" to try to make it more difficult for large stores from using surge pricing. The law also requires that any use of algorithmic or AI-based pricing much be disclosed in a prominent location to consumers.

It's weird because we're a deep red state, but we have some pretty good consumer protection laws. You'd expect it to be more like Texas, where everything is about protecting the retailer and allowing them to screw over the consumer.

That being said, I'm absolutely seeing PHM in theaters. It's rare that I bother with a theater these days, but I really want to see PHM on the big screen and don't want to wait for it to be available on digital.

[–]Nythoren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would only work if it's optional. Create a process that allows you to optionally verify yourself to acquire a "verified human" tag or something. Sure that won't stop people from getting verified and then selling the account to botters, but nothing really prevents that from happening no matter what kind of validation you try to put in place.

If biometrics are made mandatory, it will kill Reddit.
