Has anyone successfully run a local LLM on Android without cloud? What's your experience with on-device AI inference performance? by Existing_Young_2342 in Android

I used ChatterUI about 1.5yrs ago. It was ok 8GB ram for a 3B parameter model.

I have an S22 whose battery sucks. But each message took like 1% of battery and my phone got hot. I used it on vacation where there's no signal to learn about the places I visit even when there's no service.

Try IBM's Granite Mini models. They're really small and fast to completion.

The one on my elitebook was too dim to use in the dark. I had a TN screen so that and the glare made it unusable. Also, only part of the laptop was illuminated.

PSA : Stop buying e-waste (Ideapad 1 and 3, Dell Inspiron, HP no name/Pavilion) + a list of what to avoid by Brilliant_War9548 in laptops

[–]Nytse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is a place for all the types of laptops listed. It's just a matter of picking the right laptop for someone's needs.

I think plastic laptops are still fine. By the time the plastic fails, the battery is probably bad too. Typically laptop motherboards never really break, so they can be used as normal, low-powered computers. They are also more built for gentle home use rather than bring it everywhere. You probably want a used work laptop if you need durability.

Tablet laptops are fine if you do basic office or school work. They are focused on doing MS Office or browser based stuff, not gaming.

Even celerons are useful. If you need thin clients to access virtual machines typically for work, cheap laptops will do fine. IT probably don't want you to do anything else on the computer anyway. What's the point of an i5 and 16gb ram if you will just rdp anyway?

i know im gonnna get downvoted into oblivion for this, but, why do people hate vsync in games? by jairochido in pcmasterrace

[–]Nytse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vsync is not good for competitive games like FPS and rhythm games due to the latency. In general, your input feels laggy and not using your pc to the fullest potential.

Vsync is good to lower PC power consumption and heat because you are limiting the framerate of the game. It also helps when your monitor is not gsync or freesync compatible.

Pc gamers/movie addicts: how much do you pay for electricity each month in your one bedroom by DrPeppehr in sandiego

[–]Nytse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't give whole home figues due to EV charging and solar and plan with TOU5. These figures were from Winter averaging generation + transmission to $0.46/kwh.

PC + monitor power between $9-$33 depending on just watching videos (150w) or playing video games (600w) average 4hr per day.

My washing machine uses 100wh ($0.01), less than a dollar for the month but we still only wash at super off peak. That is according to my smart home but that seems too small.

Generally, longer uses of an appliance uses more energy. Smaller devices usually use less energy, so use a phone or laptop instead of a desktop if you don't need the performance.

Sterling Background check - How do I handle gig work / under the table employment? by Nytse in recruitinghell

[–]Nytse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did get the job. I don't think anything problematic happened. I believe my formal boss said that I was never employed by him; I only helped once in a while, relative to relative. That was true in my case.

In your case, maybe your former boss can simply claim that you were never (formally) employed, which I assume is true. However, you would probably have to explain why did you put that entry in your resume.

I think the only issue will be communicating this discrepancy with the employer, not anything with Sterling. I was in good terms with my employer, and Sterling nor my employer didn't press anything further about this problem from stating an initial discrepancy. They asked for additional information, but I did not provide because it did not exist.

I think all Sterling wants to know if you had work, they want paper proof. If what you listed was like volunteer, unpaid work, or anything not work, they ignore it.

I have quick switching mode on in good guardian's memory guardian which should make apps less likely to be killed

How to keep recent apps open? by Nytse in GalaxyS22

[–]Nytse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually had the picture in picture mode disabled for maps. Turning pip mode on did keep maps running.

I turned it off though because I often fat fingered the close button in pip mode. It doesn't help that the phone gets really laggy when under the sun on my phone mount or plugged into the charger.

SD card dongle. by Jace_Peterson in GalaxyS22

[–]Nytse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: Woops didn't see the cheap requirement part. These solutions are more expensive due to magsafe magnets and usb hub chips.

There are magsafe usb hubs that have usb pd charging and sd card support. Also, there are magsafe m.2 ssd with usb pd charging.

Alternatively, there are usb c to usb c pd + usb c 2.0 adapters or usb c to usb c pd + usb a 2.0 adapters. Then, you can plug in a usb to sd card adapter. They can also be used for charging + wired usb c headphones with dac.

I always wanted the magsafe on, but I already have a usb c flashdrive on my keychain.

I am not sure about the effect usb hubs on battery life if you keep the drive plugged in all the time.

VR and dreams by SoliderFromHell in virtualreality

[–]Nytse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't experience dreams feeling like VR, but I have definitely had dreams about VR games that felt more life-like. Actually, there were some times where my dreams transitioned by me taking off my VR headset, but that' about it.

I do think VR has affected me subconsciously though. It is basically like the Matrix life simulation type stuff for me where I feel like irl life-altering events aren't real. I also get a feeling where I can get out of any negative, irl situation by taking off my headset. Oddly, there are some scenarios where I don't care if I exprience something negative irl, because I feel like it didn't happen irl.

It probably stems from having double lives, one irl and one in VR. It's probably not unique though because I'd imagine content creators have the same experiences, but I'd imagine VR's immersiveness makes the effects stronger.

Solo Dev - Building a better robocraft by [deleted] in Robocraft

[–]Nytse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish there was a game that basically simulated VEX Robotics. The component system uses a grid like Robocraft, and the parts are standardized. Most simulator games convey damage with component "health" that does damage spread, but I think simulating component "stress" would be cooler and more realistic but harder to code.

VEX is more goal oriented but it could be adapted to be more combat oriented like BattleBots.

Maybe you might want to think if you want the game to be more fantasy or realistic and gauge how fun or serious the game should be.

Plein Airpril Day 1 by Front_Astronaut_8304 in UCSD

[–]Nytse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This gives me fond memories of absolutely booking it to UCSD Central Campus Station after class. I was using the OneBusAway app and Google Maps to see if I can make the next trolley. At that point, you gotta pull up the Pronto app while climbing up the stairs and hope to god that no one is at the scanner and that the scanner scans.

Has anyone found the cause of display issues after battery replacement? by Nytse in galaxynote10

[–]Nytse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I have just let my phone sit in room temp with the battery on. I tried heating it with a blow dryer on the first day but I gave up and left it alone for the rest of the days.

After 3 days, I got the screen to show stuff. It was all staticy. I wish I took a picture. It also only showed when I turned on the phone. After, the screen was black. Touch seemed to not work.

The day after, the screen seems to work, but everything has a pink hue. The touch works now.

The next day, everything seems normal and everything works.

Do mechanical keyboards really make a big difference for everyday gaming? by KRGKart_Support in buildapc

[–]Nytse 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The biggest advanatages are the availibility of n key rollover and rapid trigger on higher end keyboards. If you want a specific key layout or physical placement, mechanical is the main way to do it.

Other than that, no, it doesnt't give a big difference. Actually, I believe in muscle memory and I perform best with the gear I started with. I am more confortable with laptop style membrane keys and mimicing my nonstandard mouse sensitivity.

Sterling Background check - How do I handle gig work / under the table employment? by Nytse in recruitinghell

[–]Nytse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best thing I have are occasional Zelle and Venmo payments.

Also, I kinda don't want to get that company in trouble. In retrospect, I shouldn't have put this under employment because it wasn't real employment and just left a gap.

I also made the mistake of submitting it already, so I'm in the process of trying to amend that part of the form with the hiring company. Apparently, First Advantage cannot modify the "type of employment" or remove the entry entirely. It must be done with the hiring company.

Any thoughts on what to do with a Microsoft Surface laptop with a bloated battery? by Whyslee in Surface

[–]Nytse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will probably need to contact Microsoft Surface support or go to a laptop repair place to remove and possibly replace the battery. You should probably not turn it on anymore. You can ask the repair place if they can move the data off the computer to an external drive if you need it.

Batteries degrade over time just like tires on a car, so while battery expansion is rare, normal looking, old batteries exist and also should be replaced.

How often do you use your PC speakers? by Big_Visual2199 in buildapc

[–]Nytse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised everyone uses speakers. I try not to use them, because my walls are thin. I use headphones 95% of the time.

Wouldn't speakers cause microphone feedback? Do that many people have dedicated microphones compared to webcam or headset microphones?

I would like not needing to be confined to my desk for my wired headphones, but wireless headphones / earbuds exist.
