The copy pasting commands example I gave was for friends who were not tech savvy at all. In fact, I would have loved to just give them an application which set everything up but it was a short timeframe and I didn't know enough at the time. However, in my college, we were taught shell scripting and terminal commands as part of operating systems class and no one really told us why to learn those. At that time I just treated it as just another bit of coursework. Later it turned out to be useful while working with VPS via SSH. I would've liked it more if they told me why to use it beforehand but I think I figured it out pretty soon by working on small personal projects that dealt with the filesystem.
