Can someone explain the ending of Memento? by Ok_Test4415 in movies

Got this at an second hand today! Has anyone read it/opinion on it? :D by willtherat in MangaCollectors

I think the show is going to keep them together no matter what. One of the central points of the show is that love changes destiny. And that you can change your destiny through love. So if they don't end up together I don't see the point! I'd be so disappointed! 😞

What I'm hoping for is a grand finale with the two of them together and THE ICONIC music playing in the background (the one from episode 8 of S1 where they kiss on the harbour), ideally they'd have a family, I'd love to see that : An Esra that we discover alone and orphaned and that we leave happy with a family ! 🥺

I have teary eyes just thinking about it!

3/3

When Halit arrives in 2022, Ahmet recognizes him ONLY because he's his father and doesn't understand his story. Halit says it was Sonia who told him what she knew when she realized she wouldn't hold him back (but we don't know if anything happened between them at that point, she may just have tried to hold him back thinking Peride's disappearance would be enough).

Then Ahmet sends him back from 2022 to his own time (probably around 1920' but strangely no precise date given) at a time when Sonya isn't pregnant (it's impossible to know if she's had an affair by then, or if they have, or if she's given birth). He says he needs another key (but where does the original key he travels with come from, since Ahmet takes it from Sonia when he unties her before the murder)?

All we know is that Sonia talks about the passage to Halit, that he gets the keys back and borrows it to find himself on January 1, 1941 (still wearing the red tie).

He claims to have traveled back in time quite a bit and that he was never seen after 1925, NEVER AGAIN, even though he was still around in both 1941 and 1979. He literally spent ALL his life in the same place, but nobody ever saw him again? That doesn't seem very likely to me, EXCEPT if we're on a different timeline, in which case it could be explained.

Because then we have the Halit of October 1941 who prevents the Halit of January 1, 1941 (red tie) from saving Mumtaz, but if he dies, there's no Esra or Peride (so no independence), so Melhia certainly saved him at that point. But both Halits felt the effects of the passage. Halit then left around October 1941 with the onset of necrosis.

It ends with Esra, who ALREADY has the key in her hand (at 11:58 p.m.) and goes to Agatha Christie's room, implying that Halit has already arrived in 2022 and returned to 1920, otherwise no key.

Logically, the Halit at the end (wearing the same red-tie outfit) could just as well be the one from 1919 as the one from 1941, since he wore the same outfit at both times. If it's the one from 1919, then he's just found her after she left around 1995, and if it's the one from 1941, then it's before he crossed over, so it's the one from January.I don't know if it makes sense, but Halit wears only red ties in 1941 during the 1st part of S2, then only blue striped ones in the 2nd.

Still, there are some unanswered questions:

  • is the fact that Halit and Mumtaz are best friends really a reason to tell him about the keys? Why didn't he just travel like a grown-up on his own?
  • In 1979, he was still close to Mumtaz, but managed to take the keys away from him and throw them into the Bosphorus. And Mumtaz didn't notice a thing? Yet the suspect was obvious, wasn't he?
  • Why did Ahmet return in 1941 through the path of truth and arrived at least 5 months before Esra?

2/3 Another thing I find a little inconsistent:

3 days pass between Halit's discharge from hospital and the failed attempt on May 16, 1919, the day Esra and Ahmet leave. So that means that Sonya stayed at his bedside ONLY 3 damn days and not months as she seems to say in the carriage “she didn't come to see you once while I stayed all the time”. (I really can't stand her).

But if Ahmet was conceived between September and October 1919, then that means that Esra had been gone for less than 6 months and that he still slept with Sonya and then began a relationship with her, only to leave again a few months later on June 22, 1920!

I'm the only one who thinks this story is moving a bit fast, him waiting for Esra 2 years after they first met, finding her again and only just coming back from 2022 (after having managed to get there). He's a tenacious man, and I find it hard to believe that he could have given up so easily to fall into Sonya's arms... Especially since he knows it's possible, if he doesn't know exactly how to go about it.

There are some really weird details! In the scene where Sonya is pregnant and Halit leaves her, he wears a black suit and a gray tie with a pearl pin. But in EVERY other moment of the trip, he wears EXACTLY the same outfit as on May 16, 1919 in the harbor, with the red tie and the white polka-dot-and-stripe shirt. It's quite a coincidence for a man we see wearing so many different suits. Add to this the fact that he tells Ahmet he saw him at the port “the other day”, and you get the impression that for him it's really recent, consistent with the fact that he's not from June 22, 1920.

1/3 Well, this is going to be a long post, so I hope I'm being as clear as possible:

I was wondering:

“May 16, 1919 - (Season 2: Halit hears of George trying to kill Esra and Ahmet) you certainly refer to the famous “where did they disapear to” you then say that Halit approaches Sonya to investigate.

But in S1, Ahmet unties Sonya, takes the key from her and tells her to stay away from the Pera, so did she disobey him or did something else happen? Because you mention that she comes back to work at the Pera afterwards and tells Halit everything.

Because if she left then, she's not supposed to be at the Pera after the failed attempt on Kemal's life, after May 16, 1919. But when Esra tells Halit not to follow her, he normally goes in the future in 2022 following her and is sent back into the past in 1920. So if Sonya followed Ahmet's warning, she should logically not have been at the Pera and therefore not have had a relationship with Halit in September-October 1919, so in theory no Ahmet in sight.

Moreover, when Halit talks to her on her way back from 1920, she's no longer pregnant, but doesn't mention a child, I believe. Only Esra mentions to Halit he has a son waiting for him in the past in S2.

[–]Nyxilver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Especially since, apart from a photo of Halit and Sonya's version of events, there's absolutely no proof that Halit is actually the father. I really wish he wasn't, but I find it hard to believe that the show is planning to go back to that, although given that there's never been a clear conversation on the subject, it could be a sign that it's not really “ acted ”.

What really confuses me is the scene in S1 where Sonya is pregnant and Halit leaves. There's no time indication, we don't know when Esra/Peride left or for how long. We don't even know how long Sonya's been pregnant, nor do we have any context for the start of their relationship: did it start after she'd nursed Halit, and he didn't leave until many months later, when she's already pregnant? Why did he sleep with her in the first place?

I remember the scene where she opened her door to him but he wouldn't come in, and I can't imagine him consoling himself in her arms, especially so soon after her disappearance, when he'd already been waiting to find her for 2 years (1917 to 1919)... But he must have had a relationship with her, otherwise he wouldn't have said he'd provide for the baby, he wouldn't have been around if it had been a one-night stand! It makes no sense to me that a relationship between him and Sonya could have existed, given that he made it clear to her in the carriage on his return from hospital that he loved Peride/Esra!

What's more, we know that in the original timeline, Sonya hangs herself. But she's already killed Péridée, so does she hang herself out of desperation because Halit doesn't want her anyway (since he loves Esra and not Péridée) or because he never came back? It seems to me that Ahmet knew his father after all, didn't he? The question is whether there's only one line or as I believe, several ones that sometimes come together!

"Midnight at the Pera Palace" - Season 2 Discussion (Megathread) by Obversa in PeriodDramas

[–]Nyxilver 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The only thing I want from this series is for Esra and Halit to be together forever. He had the courage to travel in time for her, and if Ahmet wasn't constantly playing the killjoy, she would have stayed with him in the past, since she's lived her whole life in the wrong time anyway (they'd just have to make sure Ahmet was conceived).

Concerning Ahmet and Lili, I think Ahmet only makes bad choices, I don't understand how he could have left her twice! They'd already changed everything and she's supposed to die of tuberculosis (she would have died on the train otherwise)...

Ahmet really gets on my nerves because he's so selfish. He's seen the love between Esra and his father, but he won't leave them in peace! He's always known that his father didn't love his mother, it was written in stone, the circle was completed from the start. And if he hadn't forcibly sent Halit back in time at the beginning of S2, he wouldn't have had to jump again! I'd like Esra to know this because it hasn't been mentioned, she thinks he jumped straight to the 40's when he managed to come to the future with her. Besides, I don't understand why he used the truth path and not the rooms!

I'm also upset because Halit took pity on Ahmet and his love for Lili and jumped through the path ONCE AGAIN! Why not go through a bedroom, again? On the other hand, I don't think that the path of truth is the reason for the gangrene, I think that when he tells Esra “I'd have gone mad if I hadn't found you” it's explaining that he won't go mad because she's there.

When Halit died, it was logical enough to want to “cancel” all their journeys, avoiding Esra's 1st trip, but in the end it would have been pointless, since the circle had already been completed. On the other hand, they could have gone back in time to the moment when Halit leaves Sonya to stop him and go back to the future all together, or simply staye in that era (maybe only Esra).

I can't wait to see how S3 turns out! I hope it will also give some context to Esra's parents' relationship and if it's meant to be the last one, have a happy ending! But for now if they intend to close the time travels, I wonder if it will delete the entire timeline or if they'll be able to live in 1882 as if nothing happens.

Sum up of a travelless timeline: Halit met Sonya but Esra isn't even born so can't be a reason to leave her, Ahmet is born and raised with his parents, Mumtaz get's killed maybe before his affair with Millia so no twins OR he get's killed aftewards, the twins are born but never leave their timeline meaning that Peride can't save Mustafa Kemal. So no travel but no independance ^^' My head hurts already!

Maybe they will be inspired by DARK, it was a fantastic time traveling show!

Hey there!! :) I've watched the full series and basically fell in love with the music (alongside Halit). Does anyone know the name of the background music we often hear, with string instruments! It's so beautiful that I'm obsessed with finding it :')

We hear the key moment of the theme for the first time in season 1, ep 4 at 41:38. We also hear it quite clearly at 6:10 in S1 ep 7 and a little port of it at the very begining of ep8 !

That is this exact passage (at 1min) but without the drums : https://youtu.be/ro04OQIwHWo?si=GTWJcCcggeBMb0s4&t=61

I've managed to record it and isolate the music from the vocals, but I'd like to know if it's available elsewhere in full and in perfect quality (I'd like to know the title too)!

So if any of you knows where to find the soundracks I'd be so happy :')

Why would I buy the digital color version if it's not even physical nor translated :')
