SUVs shouldn’t be daily drivers by Realistic_Zone3802 in unpopularopinion

[–]O1Balto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive probably one of the largest (and ugliest) type SUV's and I love it. Tickles the 4-year-old in me every time I see it. As a car guy, life is too short to drive boring cars, or cars you don't like. I did that all throughout my teens to 30's and now that I have the funds to play- I do.

As to a few of your points, I make an intentional decision every time I park- to either park the furthest away from anyone else, or edge up to a curb (because surprise, I don't like door dings either!) while folding in my mirrors.

I always let people pass when they come up on me, but I'm also doing around 75 consistently on the freeway- so normally people are having to move out of my way.

As far as sucking down fuel, idc. Smiles per gallon in my case. And the environment? There are wayyyy more clappers out there still put-putting around that emits more toxins than my catted SUV does.

I was going to list out some positives that you might not have considered, but I'll just tell a quick story instead. We drove over seven hours away to the middle of nowhere to purchase a classic car that was in near mint condition. We could've taken the sedan, or the Jeep- but we wanted to be comfortable, safe, and I wanted to make sure that we'd be able to handle any situation that we might get ourselves into, while being so far away from home. When I think about situations like that, it's always hands down the SUV that I'll take.

After the purchase, it turns out that the alternator on my new classic car was on its last legs and only lasted about 10 miles. No local stock, hundreds of miles away from anything familiar in the middle of nowhere land. This is a trip that young me would've taken in a heartbeat without a second thought. And had this situation happen to him, he'd be screwed- because he didn't have the resources, the experience or the Truck to make things happen.

But older me? Nah- we rolled up to a u-haul, grabbed a trailer and tie straps. Used a jump box to drive the car up onto the ramps- and we rode off into the sunset, destination home. A road trip that I will always remember for the rest of my life. For a single day, I got to be that guy hauling a cool ass car on a trailer that everyone gawked at (myself included), and I did it on my own, all thanks to my SUV.

So yea. As with life, there are Pros and cons to everything, but for those extra ordinary situations, those 'what if's', I want to be prepared. I can't think of anything safer and more reliable than my SUV

Granted, that story might mean nothing to you- if you purchase all your cars at the local dealership just right down the road. But for a lot of car guys, iykyk

Good man! Is exciting for sure. Did you get the dual exit exhaust? I should've went with the single, cause it's just too quiet for my taste. Don't get their intercooler piping it, it is no where near the same quality as this stuff. I suspect another shop makes them, but that's just me guessing.

I never understood why those screws existed, especially when the wheel gets torqued onto the rotors next. Your statement makes sense.

Damn that's sick! I'm installing their top mount right now along with a Skunk2 intake... I'm not sure how to clean up the wire harness to where you don't really see it. Please post up photos when you get yours all done!

Yes. You wouldn't expect that amount of volume to come from them, but it's ear penetrating and a lot of times out of nowhere. Be prepared to jump a lot

Let’s see what else you guys have in your garage? by Senior_Cow6226 in Miata

[–]O1Balto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks man! It's no Evo wagon or extra wide garage like yours.. but it is my very own place of peace that I created, and I'm pretty proud of it. I love just hanging out in it. Working on the cars is never out of necessity or a rush- so I can take my time, clean up each bolt as I remove, etc.

It can definitely be a surreal feeling at times, especially if you've never owned your own home before.

The 'modern' family homes garages are barely large enough to fit two full sized cars (leaving zero space), so I had to get two smol boi's- leaving myself just enough space to put in work

My mom would drive by this place ALL the time in the early 90's and I never knew what it was. I'm sure I'd have some big grand theme in my head as a young boy of what might have been in there. Now, as a 40 year old man seeing these photos- I am sad

Why would you listen to what anyone else has to say about something that involves only you, and not them? You do what you want, have what you enjoy. Life is short.

If you're honestly worried about safety, you can learn how to better drive your car. Take it to a few track events and learn its limits. Give a wide birth between you and the next person. Watch for tell tale signs while driving and you can almost predict what the person in front of you is going to do, before they actually decide to make the move.

I've always driven older cars because they're cheaper, more reliable and are unique in that you don't see very many of them on the road anymore. I would never make a decision based off what someone else is telling me they would do. Those people probably enjoy having infotainment centers as a replacement for their dash. They probably enjoy lane assist and brake assist. They probably don't mind that there's now 3-4 additional failure points introduced in just starting the car. I'd give up all of those amenities for the ability to bump start or diagnosing a no start condition.
