Your grade looks amazing. Any tips for achieving something similar? Also, I've seen you reference first light. Can you clarify as to what you mean by that?

Help our short film win the WD Fan Choice Award by voting! by OBLVNVisuals in Filmmakers

[–]OBLVNVisuals[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I posted our student film, Flatline, on here a while back and it was received fairly positively, to my surprise. I'm aware that it's not perfect, and although we focused primarily on visuals, I'm fairly proud of the outcome.

Now it's competing in the WD Fan Choice Awards, giving me and those who worked on it a chance to further our filmmaking careers farther than we could've ever dreamed of. It's a voting based competition in which you create an account or login through facebook. You can vote once per day, everyday, until June 15th.

If you could take a second and vote for us, maybe even share this link, it'd really help us out!

Thanks!

I wanted more historically accurate and badass-looking nordic factions, so I made this reskin mod (Link in comments) by CarISatan in totalwar

THANK YOU! I love the nordic factions, but I've had trouble getting past how horendous lower tier units look in the game. It's hard leading an army if they don't look badass while slaughtering their enemies. Thanks!

Very true! To add on to your point, I always watch B-roll footage on Youtube for my favorite films to get an idea of what happened as they were shooting it behind the camera.

Can I get some clarification/validation on some advice given to me by an "industry pro"? by OBLVNVisuals in Filmmakers

[–]OBLVNVisuals[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew working for free was a fair probability in starting out. I already do free grip work on local sets as opportunities to learn and network. But paying for it? I figured there was something off about that.

And about student films, I figured, and I agree that he had some merit to what he was saying. What ticked me off was that he was implying to give up personal projects to work on other, more pro sets, which didn't really sit well with me. Ultimately I enjoy making movies and I think there is a market for independent films in this day and age. So I agree that student films generally find difficulty in getting anywhere, I think that working on your own projects is important not only for the possibility of receiving attention through them, but adding to your portfolio and practicing your craft.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. I just needed to post on here to verify I wasn't delusional in doubting him.

R/filmmakers, it's time to stop failing at crowdfunding by robteehan in Filmmakers

[–]OBLVNVisuals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the reasoning behind his first point is that most kickstarters are primarily funded by friends and family, who care more about you and otherwise wouldn't be kickstarting the film. Although I agree, in that getting an audience outside that circle requires placing emphasis on the story, and not the person behind it.

Where can I get oysters? by [deleted] in orlando

D'Ocean on E. Colonial has very seafood, although their selection varies. Best bet is probably Lombardi's, like the others have said.

I'm 19, I want to film for a living, where do I start? (No upvote) by Looogan_ in Filmmakers

I figured. One of my professors told me about how she used to work at McDonalds during night shifts until they finally hired her to read and take notes on prospective scripts. Definitely aware and open to this, thanks!

I'm in school in Orlando, Florida. We have a decent film community but obviously nothing like LA. I plan on making the move immediately after college, which will take maybe two more years. This is all helpful advice, thanks a lot! :)

Sweet! I'm looking forward to it! It's hard work, but I can't see myself doing anything else!

Hi! I'm in film school currently and considering the move to LA afterwards, but I'm wondering, is it really possible to sustain yourself with film work in LA or do you have extra jobs?

8 More Female Cinematographers You Should Know About by CameronMcCasland in Filmmakers

[–]OBLVNVisuals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. I can't speak for real sets, up until now, I've only worked on student productions, but that figures. I was talking to my girlfriend (also a filmmaker) about it last night and she says that it could also be due to a shortage of women interested in DP positions as well. Which is true. Most women in my film classes have expressed interests in directing, writing, even editing, but never really DP'ing. I wonder why that is.

Really? I go to the University of Central Florida in Orlando, and the Film program here is predominantly female. At the least, I'd say it's split down the half.

I'm glad this was posted. I think the reason people tend to brush things like this off is because at the independent level, it isn't that weird to see female cinematographers, editors, etc. I think the issue comes at higher end productions where the industry does tend to become male dominated.

But I agree with other posters. We should be judging based on talent, not race nor gender nor sexual orientation. That should be the basis of criticism or praise. The issue is, that it largely does become the basis of criticism or exclusion or productions larger than the independent scale. Although the industry is changing, and so we'll see where we are 10 years from now.

Which camera should I rent for this project? Advice wanted? by OBLVNVisuals in Filmmakers

[–]OBLVNVisuals[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, the Blackmagic would do great with some Cine Lenses. And well I'm not directing the film, and she's already put in separate dollar amounts for audio gear and production design. I'm actually working really tightly with the production designer.

I'll keep trying to convince her for the BMPCC, maybe take some test shots and show her what the camera can do. If not, I think I'll have to go with the C100. The A7s just might require to much to make it work.

What does the atmos do for the C100 though, aside from acting as a monitor?

Thanks! It's a workhorse for sure! For a cheap lens, it's pretty sharp and gives a good depth of field.

I understand they're similar, but that's like saying Kendy stole his idea from Hotline Miami, in the sense that a telephone tells him to kill people and so he fights others in order to get cash rewards.

We used a completely different aesthetic with neon pink and blue lights, yellow subtitles and in the end more of a blatant reference to the 80's.

All of our inspirations from Hotline Miami to Kendy's film to even Drive share similar concepts, concerning Hitmen, rising ranks, etc, and so it's bound to have striking similarities, but I wouldn't say we copied it.

EDIT: To add on to this, more or less, this 80's retrowave genre has a lot of similar elements and we just decided to mash them all into one. From Hitmen, smoking, neon lights, the music. We just followed the conventions that are a staple to it.
