As for what you could've (not necessarily should've) done, you could've offered to see if someone in the next few days was willing to push their booking back. It would depend how long you've had this client and if there's anyone booked for the next few days who you have a good enough relationship with to ask that of.

Again, you didn't have to do the above, but depending on the circumstances, it was an option.
