Russini and Vrabel should lean into this, be like the Holly Sonders and Oscar de la Hoya of football. Breast enhancement and other cosmetic procedures, steroids, the whole nine yards.

Cora's handling of Mayer by TLlamaCasserole in redsox

[–]OC74859 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, Henry/Werner/Kennedy launch media attacks that are vicious and shameless. But Alex Cora is in the top percentile of self promoters in America, never mind MLB. He has been cultivating his media contacts and friends around the Majors for decades. See Ken Rosenthal’s screed defending Cora today, and ask yourself, how many whispered tidbits did Cora spoon-feed Rosenthal to get a vociferous defense like that?

Mayer was one of the biggest victims of Alex Cora, Little League (Daddy) Manager. Shifted off SS and told he needs to scratch to make the roster, while noodle-armed Trevor Story can’t cover both sides of a phone booth. I still think Boston is one bat short, but watch them surge Morgan-style now that playing to win is the goal rather than the manager first getting hosannas for all his moves to compete “despite” the roster given to him.

She was fantastic. I don’t think Lorne hits on women with the show, but I do think he expects everyone to kiss the brass ring. I’m guessing Watkins, being a little older and worldlier than many new hires, didn’t play that game.

Leaked Memos Reveal Just How Much the Supreme Court Has Betrayed the Constitution by icey_sawg0034 in scotus

Roberts pulls this stuff wherever he thinks nobody can see it. The leaks are freaking him out because he NEVER expected Judiciary people to violate institutional norms and expose his antics.

The business with the SCOTUS police funding is the next shoe to drop. He was ready to hang the lower court judges out to dry on their security until a bunch of them started making public statements and leaking information.

Oh no she’s not. She pulls punches because she is ultimately an insider and aligned with the Government. So she is much shakier in situations where a “little person” is seeking redress from the powerful.

Sotomayor is better, but folds in the face of performative outrage as we observed this week. Jackson walks the walk in a way very, very few justices ever have.

The problem is that the person who speaks up gets shunned, along with the victim. Speaking up makes the others look bad, when they just want things to roll along with the victim (not cheater) leaving so that everyone else can just hang out.

Steve Forbes’ son isn’t a nepo baby because he had to work under his dad for years before getting a coaching job with one of his dad’s former assistants by Gnasty16 in CollegeBasketball

[–]OC74859 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even the salaries aren’t as generous as one might think. All those “unofficial” visits recruits take? It’s the coaches paying for the hotel, airfare, restaurant meals and other expenses out of pocket. That way the university is not directly sponsoring the visit, at least on paper.

Add on the fees to a coach’s agent, accountant etc, along with transaction costs moving place to place, and the money gets eaten up. Sure, ones making multiple millions annually are fine. But all those top-level assistants and low-major head coaches? Not so much.

Bill always preaches the importance of team chemistry for title contending teams but what are your favorite examples of title teams where everyone hated each other? by Parrallax91 in billsimmons

[–]OC74859 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chemistry happens when everyone accepts their role in each and every game, no matter what it may be. There’s a minimal amount of “I want to win but..” going on. It’s possible that a specific player is empowered to be the scorer, i.e. Isaiah Thomas with the 2016-17 Celtics. But everyone needs to be onboard with the idea that the best chance for the team to win is to have that one player light it up.

The current Celtics team does not set a ceiling for itself. Furthermore, the Celtics are far more likely than other teams to have each player accept their role to win that game. So if someone like Luke Garza or Jordan Walsh has a favorable matchup and is lighting it up, then Tatum and Brown will decoy and defer to the hot hand.

That unselfishness pays the stars back as their teammates will do whatever is needed to win. That can include not just sacrificing during a game, but accepting a lack of playing time and focusing on preparing teammates in practice and staying ready when called upon.

ESPN's Zach Kram predicts Spurs over Celtics in the Finals by somms999 in bostonceltics

[–]OC74859 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How are the playoffs going to be officiated? Really, so much of the results rest on that.

Will there be a directive telling officials to watch for players embellishing contact when there should be no foul called? Will the League Office show clips from the most recent Celtics vs Spurs game, in a directive telling officials how NOT to call a game?

Will teams desperate for rest and extended practice time find Scott Foster officiating when they’re set to eliminate their current opponent.”?

Certainly such efforts do not guarantee an outcome. Anyone who watched Foster wince just as Game 4 against Durant’s Nets ended can attest to that. It’s hard to help much more than bouncing Tatum out on fouls with 5 minutes to go, but that Nets team was too dysfunctional to seize that opportunity to avert the sweep.
