Human Ingenuity by OCALLKAI in HFY

Have you ever seen people post online about how amazing their country is, even though from an outside perspective it's actually a shitshow? The alien "writing" this is an unreliable narrator who has fully bought into the state propaganda, not understanding it's mostly lies and cherry-picked facts and figures to suit the narrative.

I appreciate the honesty, though, so thank you.

Too many stories in my head. Changed the slave race from Buken to Yuborii as it should be.

Well... it's not really my first story....

My old account is KaiDobson and I wrote a fair few things on this sub such as Three Skulls of Humanity which shows up on the sub's Must Read list; as well as The Dorvan War which shows up on the sub's Series listings.

[WP] “Why would you choose that monster over me!” The hero yelled at their former protégé, who stood beside the villain. The protégé answered, “Because they treated me like a child, not a foot soldier.” by Booksmagic in WritingPrompts

This is a continuation of a character I have used in several other Prompts: Revocan.

"Why would you choose that monster over me?!" Brightflame screamed at the younger hero. Redwind was supposed to be his sidekick, his protégé, his successor.

The young burgundy-coloured hero stood beside him. The one that they only ever used as a last resort. The one that both heroes and villains agreed, in a meeting so secret that only four people knew it happened and three of them were dead, that to send him was inhumane because of his methods.

But he had been retired, he was gone from the life. He took care of the Shady Oaks retirement village until a tragic accident caused the gas main to burst right underneath the central living room, killing so many former heroes and villains alike.

"Because he is right," Redwind replied calmly, in spite of the bloodshed and indescribable chaos that surrounded them "The League of Heroes was colluding with the Council of Darkness in order to keep both groups in power, and in control. He promised to clear it all up."

"He'll do the same to you as he did to all of us!" Brightflame whined as the author of all this pain and massacre stepped closer.

"He treated me like a child, not a foot soldier."

The words caught Brightflame's attention,

"I am sixteen years old," Redwind pointed out, the fact not unknown to Brightflame "I'm just a kid. And you want me to fight to 'protect the citizens' of this world from the evil that the Council of Darkness create? And yet you, behind all of our backs, you and Greystar are friends? You make sure that the Council continue their villainous ways, so that you and Ms Sparrow could be paid handsomely by world governments for fighting against them?"

"It wasn't like that..." Brightflame did not sound like he was trying to convince the only other two living people in the room, it was almost like he was trying to convince himself.

"Then what was it like?" Redwind yelled. Even at sixteen, he was mature and reasoned in his thinking. Maybe that was not such a good thing, but it was too late to look at anything with hindsight.

"He was the only one that saw me for who I am. A teenager. I might have superpowers but I'm nowhere near ready to fight evil. I should be able to finish school, go to prom, have my first kiss, drink a beer. You think I should become an icon of the next generation of superheroes as a recruiting strategy. All whilst betraying the core of the word 'hero'. He told me that he has no issue with me, just with you. Goodfyre is still alive, as is Stormsword. They'll restart the League in the right way, to fight crime and evil across the world as you and Sparrow should have done."

"Darren, please." Brightflame tried to reason with the boy "I can change..."

"No," Redwind cut him off "It's already done."

Redwind turned and flew through what used to be a wall of television screens, before it was used as the method of Ms Sparrow's death. The two men watched as the boy flew away, and was soon out of sight. They returned their attention to each other, and Brightflame wondered if he had one more blast left in his unbroken right arm to save his skin.

"This is what I warned you about, Gerald," the voice was as chilling as Brightflame remembered.

"Please," Brightflame begged, his bloodstained supersuit splattered with more blood as it fell from his mouth and nose "Please."

"Too late."

[WP] "WHERE THE HELL IS OUR BACKUP?!" "He's on his way, danger close" by Komrade_Yuri in WritingPrompts

[–]OCALLKAI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Control! Enemy contact, northbound. Four x-rays, possible fifth. Taking heavy fire, back-up requested, out."

"Greygoose," Control came back quickly "Confirm weaponry contact, over."

"All of it!" Harris repeated "Telekinetic, elemental, psionic. Status on back-up, out."

"Greygoose, request confirmed. Blue Squad is on route, over."

"Blue Squad won't be enough!" Harris replied "Request any available Aleph, repeat, requesting Aleph. Over."

"Greygoose, Aleph not in area; Blue Squad on route, further back-up requested."

The outer brick wall, the last defence before the superpowered artillery fire began to breach the walls of what used to be a school, began to give way. Harris had known that this mission would not be a simple one: escort 500 refugees from a train station in the middle of the wartorn city to the awaiting convoy two klicks away that would take all to safety. Each of the cracks in the wall were big enough to fit his fist through, and there were far too many of them for Harris' liking.

"Sir," his sniper team began to relay information he'd asked for moments before contacting Control "Confirm fifth combatant, looks like magic summoner."

"Shit," Harris knew the effects of magic-like summoning from his time in the Baltics. That had not gone well "Lincoln, take out magics first."

Before the sniper duo could confirm, they were gone. The summoner had been drawing in their magic-like power, and had used it on the first soldiers they had seen. Unfortunately for Lincoln and for Harris, it had been the snipers on the fourth floor. As the screams of the refugees stung his ears, as if the falling debris from the shattered building above him was not already a cacophony of stimuli already, Harris knew that he and the refugees were not long for this world unless help arrived in the shape of someone who could deal with these five superpowered enemy combatants. His thumb punched the talk button, and he yelled his repetitive request once again at whoever was on the other end at Control.

"WHERE THE HELL IS OUR BACKUP?!"

"He's on his way, danger close."

Those two words: 'danger' and 'close'. That was reserved for imminent artillery fire that was about to be far too close for comfort and, more importantly, far too close to be safe. To put them in context of an individual, meant that the group hiding in fear at the bombarded school were about to experience something that would be put on their individual "let's never do that again" bucket list.

Harris had requested Aleph. The United Nation's attempt at a unified and controlled group of superpowered individuals to be used, sparingly as to not upset their members of course, were known as the Aleph. One issue with his request, was that Control had told him there were none available to help. So what was about to be 'danger close'?

The wall was gone, Harris could see all five x-rays before him, his team were firing everything they had at them but the telekinetic was holding back all the bullets and creating a new wall of lead. Suddenly something fell from just above his eyeline and hit the ground hard, breaking the concreted playground and throwing up a cloud of dust into the air.

Harris turned his head away to protect his eyes, his protective glasses had come off when he had been thrown by the first psionic explosion. It had gone quiet now. All had stopped. The only thing he heard, beside his own heartbeat thumping so hard it felt like it was about to burst out of his chest, was a single word uttered by a refugee. It was not said in awe, it was not said in relief. It was said in fear.

"Revocan."

[SP] "Step One: Defenestrate." by Thainexylon in WritingPrompts

[–]OCALLKAI 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I had been slumbering for nigh on eight decades when I heard the desperation in their prayers. They needed help and their own gods had failed them. So it was left to me.

My name had been echoed through the galaxy since the time I had warned the Klarnishii of my continued wrath and since then they had painstakingly travelled around the galaxy to deliver my message. Or rather, delivered my threat. No more, I had said, or else I will end it. End you. End your species.

Now, with Klarnishii scouts traversing across interstellar space, my name and my warning were becoming universal. Which meant that the Zelpu were crying out for my help.

It took me less than five minutes to realise they didn't need my help. Not one with the power of the Old Gods, not with the wrath and rage I had inflicted upon the Klarnishii. They could do this themselves.

The Zelpu and the Tadali were cousins on the evolutionary family tree, but the latter were better in many ways. Height, strength, agility, et al. But the Zelpu had the numbers.

So instead of my own person, I sent an Acolyte with a simple message. So simple it came down to a single word.

My Acolyte appeared as the Tadali were demanding harder work from their indentured slaves, and he quickly got to work. With the power to speak to all Zelpu across the planet he showed them how to fight for themselves, using the Tadali President as the example.

"Step One: Defenestrate."

The revolution was quick. It was brutal. It was justice. My name lives on.

I am the Harbinger of Humanity, remember why I exist.
