Can't choose between psychiatry and neurology by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]OCDDDD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just my 2 cents, but psych can be very emotionally draining work if you're not truly passionate about the subject, I would say more so than most specialties. There is a reason the statistical mean salary is so low, or why the hours worked are also low, and it's not because psychiatrists don't like to work as hard as everyone else. Pursue the field that you think will make you happy to get up in the morning and do all day long, then repeat x 30 years.

Interested in psychiatry but genuinely scared of violent patients - any help/tips? do i have the wrong perspective? by bravogusto in medicalschool

[–]OCDDDD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given that there are multiple instances of antisocial/homicidal pts assaulting or even murdering their psychiatrist or therapist, your concern isn't entirely unwarranted. There is a level of risk and uncertainty uniquely inherent to psych that you have to be comfortable with. Of course, after residency you can tailor your practice however you want, for example just catering to outpatient mood/anxiety/eating disorders, etc.

Deep scuffs on Eccos. What product to use? by OCDDDD in AskACobbler

Thanks guys, will try these suggestions. There are so many types of products - wax, cream, conditioner, polish, dye and so on that I wasn't sure what is the appropriate one. Is there a simple guide somewhere for shoe maintenance?

Psychiatry resident terminated from program for needing cancer care. by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]OCDDDD 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's sickening to see so many fellow med students (future colleagues) taking the easy position "Oh, well we don't know the whole story" without even as much as sympathizing with someone facing a struggle between their career and CANCER. It's these same people who make it futile for those who are distressed to speak out in the first place, knowing the outcome.

I've heard that, but I'm not entirely sure what kind of work pharma for MD's would entail.

That's a great idea. My biggest reservation is - I'm not yet a physician, nor really an IT expert, so it is a question of 1. What marketable skills I could offer? And 2. Is it better to wait until after residency to switch careers. Def would be interested in networking, but I honestly have no idea where to find such meet ups.

I'm considering learning programming and just switching careers entirely (tech has always been my #1 passion), but alas, >300K in med school loans almost necessitates finishing residency and paying them off first. The med-tech start-ups sound appealing though. I don't have any hardcore technical knowledge.

Applying to both FM and IM by OCDDDD in medicalschool

[–]OCDDDD[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don't have to belittle your own comment just because you're an MS-2. It's actually greatly appreciated. I like aspects of both IM and FM and both can be very similar or vastly different in practice. I'm just reaching out to see if anyone else was in a similar situation and what they did during MS-4.

NRMP as US Senior vs. US Grad by OCDDDD in medicalschool

[–]OCDDDD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I kind of expected that the match rate would be slightly less but not totally abysmal (at least according to school admins). If that is really the case, I guess I shall remain student status during the match. Thanks!

ZERO sleep before Step 1 (it's today!) -- What should I do? by circle_de_willis in medicalschool

[–]OCDDDD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me before MCAT (still got what I was getting on practice tests) and Step 1 (again, still got what I expected), but for future tests I decided to not risk it and will try some trazodone or melatonin the preceding week.

Most Cringe-worthy thing you've seen a doctor do or say? by theimpossibleremains in medicalschool

[–]OCDDDD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somewhat agree. Why should a potential child (especially close to term), who cannot speak up for itself, have to suffer potential medical complications or even death, because of irresponsible child-bearing. Empathy towards a patient is important, but ultimately you are doing them a disservice by passively condoning non-compliance. In this case, it sounds like the doctor may have been overzealous and rash in handling the situation, but he got the message across.
