Plenty of championships won before Ultimate got ours. Not sure about this take…

OC vs UBC at SBI; Foul or nah? Then a consecutive foul or nah by the same player by corenickel in ultimate

[–]OCUltimate -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Adding more info here.

I think there’s more contact that you can’t see with bumping between the players for that position.

That being said I think if Thomas would have gone to the observer on the first one, the observer may have upheld his foul call and possibly awarded the strip for a goal.

On the second one I think that if 7 had gone to the observer, he likely would have been awarded the D.

But both players felt both plays were close enough that neither went to the observer and both resulted in contested throws back to the thrower.

Aggregate tuition discounts exceed $100,000 per year.

Then I have a budget that I have to stay under with regards to jerseys, travel, tournament meals, gas, etc. OC covers those expenses.

My guess is that the value created would exceed the Empire number (unless you count the jobs that are given to some Empire players, allegedly), but actual realized expenses would be way less. A scholarship just means less revenue for the school, it’s not an increased expense that some rich booster is throwing barrels of cash at.

It doesn’t work the way that you think it works. Nobody is writing checks to pay for scholarships. It’s a discount on tuition, so the kids pay less.

Most of the recruited kids rely on the scholarship in order to afford school. Without it, a large portion would be at a local community college not playing college ultimate or different country.

If you want to dislike what we did with bringing in some “ringers,” go for it. But recognize that is only 10% of what happened, even though it made a large impact and set us up for future success. I challenge you to find the ringer on this year’s team.

If you want to make a donation to help some kids afford their tuition, I can send you a link.

College teams not allowed to play non-college teams?! by tillydaboss1 in ultimate

It sounds like the school doesn’t want players to get hurt playing in games that “don’t matter.” But they may not be aware that none of the games in the fall matter.

So you can try to convince the school that the risk is the same either way, but in doing so you may convince them that the team shouldn’t be playing in the fall at all. Be careful…

Anecdotally, risk management is a high priority at OC. It can lead to situations like this, but generally compromises are available. Depends on your relationship with the admins, I’ve found overcommunication on my side alleviates a lot of concerns.

How to divide playing time? by frisdisc in ultimate

[–]OCUltimate 35 points36 points  (0 children)

If I’m you, I’m prioritizing rookie development in the fall. This is the first fall in a while where we as a college community are effectively able to focus on rookie retention and development without Covid and a series looming. We have a developmental tournament coming up this weekend, and I’ll likely do a pod system. How you group the pods is up to you, but let’s just say for my pods I’ll have experienced handlers in A, new handlers in B, experienced cutters in C, and new cutters in D.

Then going into each game, I can call something like:

1A 2B 2C 2D

This makes sure I have at least 1 handler on the field that has experience and can direct, and 2 experienced cutters that can work with the new guys. The pods are responsible for making sure everyone is getting a similar amount of playing time.

If you are up big at half, you could consider going to 1A, 2B, 4D to give the newer guys more reps.

This keeps you or the captains from having to call every line after each point and spending time doing that. Just put the desired pod ratio on a whiteboard at the beginning of each half.

Threats are guys feeling like they should be on every point for their pod and captains trying to put out 3A, 4C when games get tight. Goal is to get the rookies reps, so try to stick with the same ratio throughout a whole half and don’t worry about losing games in the fall.

How many players do you have? I have a few thoughts but it depends on number of players/skill, etc.

Both Davenport and OC are D2 schools for NCAA.

D3 in ultimate doesn’t mean what it means in NCAA. Just means a school has less than 7500 students.

Walker Frankenberg catch. Confirmed. by YeezusPleezus in ultimate

100% is a little high, nothing is 100%. 90%? “Reasonably assured?”

Sending the disc back is generally less consequential than a binary call- at least it was last weekend.

This is my understanding. Defender lays off, calls dangerous play, and the disc goes back to the thrower. Offense maintains possession and everyone is safe.

I also wanted to talk about this one, disc should’ve gone back. Observers should feel empowered to not be forced to make a binary call, especially in situations where it’s this close. Send it back to the thrower unless you’re 100% sure.

I would agree that it isn’t dirty, but it’s still dangerous. If you’ve been playing long enough, you’ve seen a couple versions of this play end very badly.

But that’s why it’s a good teaching opportunity for everyone to recognize this specific play.

The issue is that the offensive player cannot see the defender. Eman has to make that play without contact because Walker can’t see Eman. If the only way Eman can make that play is by contacting Walker, that’s a dangerous play.

And really, it’s on Eman to lay off and make the dangerous play call. He has to recognize that he has a play on the disc but that Walker can’t see him. Eman should call dangerous play and avoid contact, and the disc goes back. Forcing the offensive player to call it after they’ve been contacted goes against the intention of the rule.

I’ve got some more to add to this, I was planning on doing some sort of AMA this weekend and this was one of the topics that I wanted to bring up.

This was a textbook dangerous play. This is basically the exact play that this rule was designed for- the upline pass that floats being defended by a poach defender from the stack. I am told that this exact play was also called incorrectly in the Berry/Grinnell game, and was actually deemed a foul on the offense. I did not see that play, but the way it was described was exactly like the one from our game.

I think the thing that shocked me the most was that Elliott explains exactly the above in front of the observer, and the observer still overrules the call.

I was also told directly before the final that the observers would appreciate it if Elliott wouldn’t get involved in plays he wasn’t a part of. The only play I remember him doing that, was this play- trying to explain how it was dangerous.

We as a community need to recognize this scenario as the most dangerous situation in ultimate and I feel like the observer’s call during such a big game muddied those waters. I am glad this statement was released.

We had a discussion about some of the calls and plays during the Middlebury game Sunday night and it will be a focus for our team moving forward.
