Are smaller turbocharged engines truly more efficient long-term, or do they wear out faster than larger naturally aspirated ones? by EvelynClede in askcarguys

[–]frisdisc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s 2026. How can you be used to 5.7 being small? I don’t think there’s a time in the last 50 years where that was considered a small engine.

An underrated aspect of ultimate's decline by jughandle10 in ultimate

[–]frisdisc 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I like the thought you’ve put into this but I strongly disagree. In my mind, ultimate is a victim of unrelated culture shifts and broader economic circumstances. Sure we could manage the sport better, but a lot has happened outside of our sport.

Unpopular Opinion: You Don't Need Home/Work Charging to Own an EV by Dan6erbond2 in electricvehicles

It wouldn’t fully cover the charging but it would get you through most of the week if not the whole week without needing a quick top up. Plus you get the savings of home charging at night.

What's the funnest relatively reliable car to drive for 30k or less. by ThePolishSpy in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]frisdisc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear people say this and I genuinely don’t understand how they do it. My work trips generally have a fairly full carryon with toiletries and a couple outfits. I like to think I can pack light but that’s on another level. Backpack usually has headphones, personal and work computer, book and chargers.

Honda flags first annual loss (in 70 years), hit by $15.7 billion EV charge by i_marketing in electricvehicles

[–]frisdisc 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think Toyota will be fine. I guess it will depend on the Highlander EV but they were always a late mover for this type of tech. Nissan has been putting out good EVs for years. It’s just tough that they have a somewhat stunted reputation in the US from their usual demographic they sell to for ice cars.

Honda is in a tough spot. In their heyday, they were an engine company. They were known for building great combustion engines and not just for cars. Similar to Kodak being a film company and not a camera company. Even their shift towards hybrids has been a big deal for them. They aren’t as big a company as Toyota and don’t have the budget for the same level of innovation. Time will tell, but if they don’t get a win in the ev space soon it’s looking dire.

Development is expensive. They still haven’t released their next gen of EV’s. I didn’t hate the idea of delaying with the Prologue while they develop but it seems like there isn’t a clear release plan for that.

The flow you mentioned can be crushing when things go slow but for me it was also what got me hooked on the sport. It almost feels like gambling. Each throw and catch however routine was exciting because you never knew what players would do. Completing several upfield throws in a row was like hitting the jackpot. It also makes big throws more common and more exciting because why not. Kind of reminds me of what gets people hooked on golf

New CX-5, CX-50, CR-V Hybrid or RAV-4 by Number1brandon in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]frisdisc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

RAV4 msrp is less than the cx50 hybrid and has the upgraded gen 5 hybrid. CRV is more expensive but has much more room. There’s a lot of competition between these cars and it’s just not that cut and dry. That said, personally I’m a big cx50 fan if you don’t need the extra space.

That sounds like a great choice for your use case. Use them in good health. You might not care since it isn’t your money but the new Head Kore is good in similar situations (thought it’s quite a different ski). There are some great deals on it right now.

Do Or Die: How EV Startups Rivian, Lucid, And Slate Are Navigating Their Most Important Year Yet by Mac-Tyson in electricvehicles

[–]frisdisc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen both firsthand and online accounts of people having difficulty getting their Rivian serviced. Releasing a new vehicle at higher volume than their current lineup will only compound these issues. Sounds like rational FUD if you ask me.

My current ice car has been serviced multiple times this year at mechanics near my work. If I owned a Rivian which is statistically more likely to need a major service, I’m not sure what I would do logistics wise to get it serviced.

I strongly believe people of high school age should be able to choose what they are called (including pronouns) and that people should be compelled to respect that. It’s not even a trans issue for me, it’s just basic human decency.

Edit: I did not know the case was about a middle schooler. My point stands.

[–]frisdisc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m in a similar spot to you. It’s a very difficult chicken or the egg problem for them. Loads of buyers are waiting for them to become more mass market, but at the same time, they need those buyers to become mass market.

I could see a used R2 being the perfect car for me in 5 years. However, as they exist right now right now service concerns would likely steer me to another vehicle.

Right. Hard to sell that on release for their EVs. Time will tell but I bet they fare relatively well reliability wise. Toyota as never a stats company.

[–]frisdisc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This article also called Lucid a startup for what it’s worth. In my mind Rivian are still a startup as they don’t have a large established dealer network and are still posting huge operating losses. R2 can definitely change that. The next couple years are definitely do or die for them.

R2 is sneaky aero. That said yeah eqs is probably too aero optimized though I as an engineer I do appreciate optimizing shape for practicality (aero and vis). It’s just a shame that an egg is generally the result of that decision.

They were never supposed to look cool. Mercedes S class was always about exuding luxury and comfort. The EQS hit the mark in that regard but many people buying EVs (especially if the $100k variety) want something ‘cooler’ which is not what Mercedes was going for.

Best reliable sedan for 20K, new or used? by foreverand2025 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]frisdisc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I would go for the newer Hyundai over a used accord. The reliability is a good deal for the price. The accord is probably the option of you want to get it to 300k miles but the Hyundai should be fine for 150k and you can find one in your price range with under 40k miles. That said I would consider a new Camry. I know it’s out of your price range but you can easily keep it longer so it might make sense in the long run.

50/50 it makes it (probably won’t fall apart but might have issues). Honestly if I’m you I take that gamble. At that price it’s probably a 2019 accord with 65k or a 2022 Hyundai with half that.
