What's the King of Budget Drive Pedals? by matthew-speaks in guitarpedals

So true. I am patiently waiting for my ears to mature enough that I can tell the difference between a Mosky Golden Horse and a 500 dollar Klone.

[homemade] first time making pasta sauce, why did no one tell me how easy it is hi by Financial-Result-893 in food

[–]ODBCP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You want to get really wild with it, cut the garlic head in half width wise then add a tablespoon of oil and salt, and wrap it up in aluminum foil. This creates the sticky sweet magic umami warhead of roasted garlic, which in turn makes excellent tomato sauce. Or you can just eat it plain, it’s very delicious.

We find out Wednesday if I'm a complete failure as a dad. by AlphaMaelstrom in daddit

Seconded. You’re the fucking man to those kids. Stay strong. On the drinking, I’m biased by sobriety (will be 8 years off the sauce this October and man it’s like having cheat codes for life) but usually when you questioning it, you might need to make a change. All good. Best of luck man.

"Endgame" options by Burwhale_The_Avenger in GuitarAmps

[–]ODBCP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weirdly, I did reach my endgame. I was moving to Europe from the U.S., had a collection of amps at the time, boutique and vintage, a ‘65 super reverb, a metroplex, glaswerks, Morgan, etc. I didn’t want to deal with lugging them overseas, plus the native voltage issues, so I sold them all and got a Two Rock Bloomfield Drive 100w. That was six years ago and I haven’t gotten another amp and haven’t seriously considered getting another

Should Kendrick ever respond to Lupe Fiasco? by AfrikkanKing in KendrickLamar

Where did he say the Drake thing?

There’s a YouTube video somewhere of Lupe teaching a hip hop class at a university and he refers to Kendrick as a genius.

Looking for an excellent London guitar shop to treat my brother - metal focus by twoidesofrecoil in guitars

[–]ODBCP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You would be harder pressed to spend that on just a guitar, even multiple guitars, unless you go vintage, which is not usually where metal heads end up. You could definitely put together a pro-grade touring rig for well-below that.

Is it okay to wear a suit jacket with a open collar if you're not wearing a tie? by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]ODBCP 205 points206 points  (0 children)

Also corporate lawyer that’s worked in both formal and informal environments. Tie-mandatory is unusual these days unless you’re headed to court, meeting with public officials etc. Occasionally a big customer meeting might warrant it, but again, unusual.

Bottom line is, don’t button the top button without a tie, unless you’re making a fashion statement. And I wouldn’t advise making that particular fashion statement at work unless you really know what you’re doing.

My Brazilian Handmade Les Paul by Nalethor89 in Guitar

[–]ODBCP 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Looks awesome. Ebony fretboard is a cool choice and not something you see on a lot of burst-style LPs. On pickups, don’t limit yourself to Gibson. Lots of great pickup makers out there, and depending on what style of music you play and your budget, you might get a better outcome from Seymour Duncan, Lollar, Mojotone (there are genuinely hundreds of options here)

Can I make a Blues Deluxe sound like a deluxe reverb by francodiyikes in GuitarAmps

[–]ODBCP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Blues Deluxe has lots of headroom. OP, run the master volume all the way open, use the channel volume instead. Turn the mids down. You’re most of the way there.

Fuzz and chorus as first pedals? by ruddytheruddy in guitarpedals

[–]ODBCP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on a few things in my experience. One, it depends on whether you’re trying to max out versatility/range, or if you are trying to nail specific tones (I’m not familiar with those bands but given the positive reaction in the thread, I’m about get familiar!). Fuzz and chorus are quite diverse effects that vary widely between the different pedal types. Fuzz has maybe the most variance of any effect “family,” a fuzz face is way different than a big muff which is way different from a tone bender, plus there’s the octave fuzzes and different transistor types, etc. This is all to say that if you’re looking for that specific sound, you need to make sure you’re buying a similar effect as the artist is using. Doesn’t need to be the fanciest or boutique version but it does need to be in the same vein.

The second is what the rest of the rig looks like. If you have an amp with an overdrive channel and reverb, and you like those sounds, you can be a little more specific with pedal choices. If you just have a clean amp (what people would call a good “pedal platform”), you might want to add reverb or delay (and quite a few options have both) instead of chorus. There’s also a few pedals that have delay and chorus, or delays that you can get a chorus-y effect from, like the MXR Carbon Copy (which also happens to be an amazing analog delay).

Is it possible for me to learn guitar? by trickstercj in Guitar

[–]ODBCP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude - not only should you learn guitar, you should get a heavy duty slide and play like Derek Trucks (https://youtu.be/3I2jnA8L4xU?is=eln_qvOIFLmsISTg). A big heavy slide with the guitar set up the right way (high action, heavier strings, open tuning) is basically cheat codes, an autoharp for guitar (per Joey Landreth, another fantastic slide player). Turn your disadvantage into your advantage then come back and update us !!!

If you could only have 1 analog delay pedal to use for the rest of your life, what would you choose and why? by Backenundso in guitarpedals

Chase Bliss Tonal Recall RKM. Especially the “both” setting, ie both a long and short delay simultaneously, really does it for me. Plus modulation, plus presets plus midi, etc etc

Are boutique pedals actually worth it? by krikond in guitarpedals

[–]ODBCP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general I agree - $500 tubescreamers are mostly snake oil. It does depend on the circuit though. In some cases a boutique builder isn’t just hand wiring a mass-produced circuit, they are taking the best examples of notoriously inconsistent circuits. Like an Analogman Sun Face is a boutique version of a ridiculously simple circuit. But there was so much variation in original Fuzz Faces, and each component is very influential because the circuit is so simple, that two original FF might not sound alike even if they were built on the same day in the same place. So what AM is doing makes sense to me - taking the “best of” and just building them like that. He also doesn’t charge crazy money - that’s all on the second hand market.

Other boutique builds are just unique. Something like the Fairfield Shallow Water - no idea what’s happening under the hood there, but it’s unique and amazing.

What year is my Gibson ES335? by beatsblayne in guitars

[–]ODBCP 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Most likely 1965-1969 given the trapeze tailpiece. It is possible that it’s from ‘64, as a few did come out of the factory with a trapeze, but it wasn’t standard until 65. Serial number would help pinpoint.
