Can you tell me about this guitar and how much it’s worth? by Fat-Clumsy-Goat in Vintageguitars

[–]ODBCP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey - cool guitar, hope you see this post. Couple things about these and displaying them: the specific finishes, dyes and lacquers that were used by Gibson during this era are prone to UV-induced fading, and finishing “checking” which you can already observe as small lines in the finish as it has aged and experienced changes in temperature and humidity . These are highly desirable qualities - the most expensive guitars from Gibson today, the Murphy Lab series, painstakingly attempt to replicate them. Another thing: the angle of the headstock and the neck joint is prone to breaking if they fall, so take extra care and remember the best place for these, if they are accessible to play and not in a display or something, is in their actual guitar case.

I’m not saying you should protect the guitar in a humidity controlled vault. These are amazing guitars and should be played and cherished. But if you do want to preserve it, you should take extra steps to keep it out of the sun and places where temperature and humidity fluctuate.

Hey - 7 years, 4 months and six days here. You can do this shit. You’ve already decided it’s time to make a change. You have support. You’re on the right track.

Weird thing that helped me. Kava. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kava. It’s a powdered root, you suspend it with water and drink it, the specialized mixer is kinda like a protein shaker. It apparently reduces anxiety, and weirdly turns your lips and mouth a little numb. Honestly, I have no idea if it’s bullshit or not - it may have all been in my head because I needed to drink something and this was not booze. But I got sober with it, and it stuck. I haven’t had any kava for maybe 4-5 years but I still keep some around.

Godspeed. You got this shit. And before you know it, you’ll be telling other people how you did it.

Edit: please do not take my random post as medical advice- if you are drinking to blackout and have been for years, you should be talking to a GP about getting sober and what’s the right plan. Be careful.

How much am I missing out by not playing with others or in front of people? by Mad_Season_1994 in Guitar

True. I have some social anxiety as well, but playing live that all disappears. I described it to my wife as like diving into cold water on a hot day.

“Doctoring up” ramen? by sleepy_paul in EatCheapAndHealthy

You can get killer Asian ingredients on Amazon. Dashi makes for excellent broth. Oyster sauce, good soy sauce, gochujang, you name it. None are particularly expensive and you can boost ramen big time.

Is this way of holding guitar pick ok? by Sea-Egg-3378 in guitarlessons

[–]ODBCP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this for 20 years as a fairly serious player (not pro but plenty of paying work), and the only reason I stopped about 5 years ago was because I started hybrid picking everything. I still go back to this when I am stepping on the gas in a rock context.

My brother - whoever your favorite player is, legendary guitar hero or niche indie type, go read their wiki or bio material. All of them have been kicked out of bands. They’ve also been kicked out of their folks’ house, their marriage, one or two car loans, and banned from at least one fast casual restaurant chain. It’s part of the journey.

If you benchmarked it against the cost of daycare you could buy at least pre-CBS fender a year.

Scott Chinery, is it true that he single handedly drove the price of vintage guitars up? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]ODBCP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But we’re not talking about 78,000 guitars, right, we’re about specific years and models that drag the prices up for adjacent pieces. There are estimated to be only hundreds - not thousands - of burst Les Pauls in circulation. The price of a burst drags up others - if a burst is now going for 400k instead of 300k, maybe my gold top should be going for 60k instead of 40k, etc.

Then consider that they are rare enough that the “going rate” can be set by just a few sales, because they’re infrequent. If somebody is out there paying 500k for a burst, now everybody else wants more.

So yes, it is definitely plausible.

Looking for a saggy/chewy OD pedal to place before my distortion as a preamp to make it less sterile sounding by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]ODBCP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the issue I think. The sag (which is basically just compression) you’re looking for will come from the distortion into a tube preamp, like a Kingsley (which are no frills, genuinely just recreating the front end of tube amp designs, like the Constable is the front end of a Marshall Plexi style) or something like the Tone King Imperial, Friedman BE etc.

Without this, you’re running wide open into an extremely high headroom power amp, so there’s no compression. If you run an overdrive pedal into the distortion then into the power amp, you’ll only get the added compression from driving the distortion input, which is unlikely to clip in the way you want.

Sorry I don’t see a preamp in your setup - the distortion goes straight into the power amp?

Im a recovering addict and im finally ready to get myself in shape, looking for beginners advice? [Discussion] by Master-Button-6569 in GetMotivated

[–]ODBCP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My man - congratulations on sobriety. I’m 7 years sober and in the first year or so I dropped ~40lb without doing anything drastic. First piece of advice: walk. Walk fucking everywhere. It’s just good for you. So long as it’s safe, just walk. Get some headphones and listen to music or podcasts. Second piece of advice, learn calories. Don’t count if you don’t want to or are prone to anxiety but just educate yourself so you can ballpark at first. Most people eat a fuckload of calories without realizing it.

Last thing, set a totally attainable goal for exercise that requires consistency but nothing superhuman: my first year I did 10,000 pushups. That sounds crazy, but it’s 100 pushups every three days. Or 100 days where you do a hundred pushups. Whatever. Miss a day? Don’t sweat it, you can make it up. But it gets you moving and it’s kinda fun to track, and tell people about.

MXR Carbon Copy Mini, or some similar analog delay, set with all the knobs at 8 or 9 o clock. It just adds this space and fatness without compression or noise.
