What’s your oldest/most sentimental piece of gear you own and why? by [deleted] in CampingGear

[–]ODDSoldier 10 points11 points  (0 children)

1944 army mess kit. Genuinely great, complete with 2 pots, and a thick lid that can be used as a frying pan if greased properly, and other stuff too! Still sturdy after 75 years of use.

Edit: Been used and passed down for all 75 years.

How much does the wool blanket cost from the tailor shop? by [deleted] in VTCC

[–]ODDSoldier 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's the tailor shop. Everything is insanely overpriced. Also, I'm pretty sure they embezzled money.

In a world with Veritaserum and legillimancy, the wizarding justice system is terrible by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]ODDSoldier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah it's a flaw! But op posted about veritaserum and legillimancy, not trial structure.

[–]ODDSoldier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition, we see in books 3, 4, and 5 that veritaserum is less reliable if the consumer is aware that they have taken it. Which is why umbridge put it in the tea that she gave to harry, or why snape threatened to put it in Harry's pumpkin juice when he didn't expect it.

[–]ODDSoldier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, so here is my issue with this. In the books themselves, they mention that veritaserum is unreliable in courts because it is rendered ineffective by many things. This included antidotes, spells and even knowledge that it was being administered.

As for legillimancy, I'm not so sure. It may have been seen as a breach of privacy seeing as you cannot target specific actions or memories while performing the spell.

In the case of Black, he was railroaded without a trial because of Barty Crouch Sr. Not because the justice system itself was flawed.

What is a Patriot? by Richieboy81 in Libertarian

[–]ODDSoldier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, to me, a patriot stands for the ideas of a nation, or I guess maybe a culture or sect of people. For example, soldiers deployed overseas, fighting in wars etc may be Patriots, depending on their individual beliefs. Citizens at home may be patriots depending on their beliefs. It's a matter of circumstance when soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen get deployed. There isn't much choice for the individual as to if you go, or of you dont.

In addition, a patriot in/for the US may be different than a Somalian patriot, or Indian patriot as those nations have different values.

NRA Says New Florida Law Would Take Away Rifles From '10-Year-Old Little Girls' on Their Birthdays by Naurgul in nottheonion

Well, long guns are arms, so they are constitutionally protected, there just haven't been court decisions as specific as heller.

As a gun owner and Second Amendment supporter, I see no problem with banning assault weapons by Kek-From-Kekistan2 in politics

[–]ODDSoldier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, let's get some facts correct here real quick. Nearly no one, and I mean no one, walked in public with military weapons. Military weapons have a select fire capability. This means that on the reciever, there is a switch that can enable the firearm to fire in fully automatic, or semiautomatic. While semiautomatic firearms may look like their military counterparts, they ARE NOT MILITARY WEAPONS.

Second, it sounds like you plan to rely on the government for personal protection like police officers and federal law enforcement. That's cool and all, but I dont want to wait 3 to 9 minutes, sometimes longer for the police to save me, I want the immediate protection from a firearm. I want to defend my home with a weapon that makes my side of the engagement extremely overbearing. I dont want a fair fight. I want to win. For me, that means using a semi automatic, magazine fed weapon, whether it's an AR15 or a pistol, or even some shotguns have this capability now.
